Your customer will surely be pleased to learn that a missing screw was the culprit. With that, perhaps they will be happy to invest in a thorough cleaning/tuning, if recommended by you as they were prepared to invest in what they probably thought was an expensive repair. Another great video with such clear magnification and narration!

The owner is lucky it didn't do more damage. I once had a mainspring break on a Gustav Becker wall clock. It broke three teeth off and bent another two. I had to replce all five of them.
@jamesmartin5370Ай бұрын
Yes, They used powerful mainsprings in these. I am surprised they didn't make it standard equipment to install two clicks on each ratchet wheel.

I have same clock very nice runner if strike & chime a bit loud , I don’t think I would leave that barrel like that. I have just replaced 2 teeth on a Huber torsion clock barrel.
@jamesmartin5370Ай бұрын
Leather in the chime hammers in a clock of this age can harden and cause them to be louder than designed.

Very interesting seeing those tooth repairs. Hard to tell with old solder, but a brief visit with a torch along with a little flux might get that old solder to reflow and fill some of those voids. However, as you note, it's been running for years so there is also no reason to believe that it won't continue to run just fine for many more years. Then again, it also makes you wonder what happened in the past to destroy those teeth.

Makes you wonder how long that screw was missing. Since the last repair, maybe? Could the ratchet wheel have operated unrestrained for a long time, until one day it didn’t?

Good question, It could have been missing for a long time. Owner searched in the clock case and couldn't locate the screw, so we will never know.

No inspection of strike mainspring ? That event could broken the mainspring or caused the arbor to lose its grip on the eye of the mainspring.
