Excellent work James! ❤ We live in the world of the smart phone so the vast majority of do not appreciate yesterdays tech. Everyone had a clock in my grandfathers day. I love to hear the ticking and the sound of bong and chime. Makes a home feel cozy. I look forward to all of your videos. 👍👍👍

Made by Schatz, Bulova just stuck their name on it, they generally wear pretty badly and the cone pivots on that large balance wheel need sharpening and polishing, and check the pivot cups too
@winstonchurchill3597Күн бұрын
Well I guess after 51 years one would expect the bushings to be worn, especially on a clock that has been running for the majority of the time.
@jamesmartin5370Күн бұрын
Yes, These were sold with various brand names on them, marketed as an inexpensive ornamental gift clock, very thin plates on them.

Is it correct? The oil seems to contain acid, it looks like rust on the spots where the oil is
@jamesmartin5370Күн бұрын
Agree, All oil oxidizes, causing acidic byproducts to form that can cause metal to oxidize. Rate of oxidation depends on type of oil, temperature, light, and the presence of oxygen, moisture, and metals.

I never liked seeing the punch method. I know that it is generally frowned upon as a proper fix. Pivots are often bent as a result. I enjoy your videos very much. Always something new to learn.

Great work on the movement. I've seen punch marks like those on other clock plates, is that something that was a common practice in the past. I see the gold paint was left on, it sure would have been nice to see that removed and see what condation the case is in. If it was bad one could always paint it again.

The quality of your work is outstanding. Balance wheel clocks seem very difficult to work on. I’m learning clock repair and have tackled 400 day, cuckoo clocks, and one Westminster chime so far. Maybe some day I will be 1/10th as good as you 😂. I have a clock I bought with a balance wheel and it seems like it needs a lot of work like this one. The balance wheel staff seems worn as there’s lots of play. If I ever decide to have it fixed I will contact you.

Another great episode, thank you!! I seem to remember a similar clock at my old grade school principal's office (of which I spent an inordinate amount of time in) that made a similar sound periodically. I think it controlled all the clocks in the school building, which was built around 1900 or so (Oklahoma City). A three story building with about 30 classrooms....lots of wall clocks.
