Are the pivot holes in the plugs centered? Or are all the pivot holes off centered like the holes the plugs sit in
@jamesmartin5370Күн бұрын
Pivot holes and plugs are off centered in relation to the holes in the steel plates. These were fabricated by first installing blank brass plugs in the steel plates, then the steel plates were put in a drill jig on top of each other and the pivot holes were drilled in correct place through both plates at the same time. I have seen people remove the brass plugs in these, not a good idea.

You are amazing! Thank you so much! This is my third watch of this video. You have inspired me and given me the tips and confidence to take on more cherished clocks and my collection is growing because of it. I have an 1881 Waterbury Cardinal V.P with alarm it’s my newest amazing find and she needs some TLC. I’d like to think I can give her another 150 or so years. Thanks to you and a couple other very generous creators on KZbin and many successful clock rehabs I know I can. On the back of this clock are the clockmakers who serviced her written in pencil below the original paper Waterbury label. The first one is 1892 the last one is hard to read but we think is 1991. I can’t wait to add my name to the list. God bless you Mr. Martin and Thanks again. 😊

Hi there. I wonder if you may be able to help me. I have an Ansonia clock very similar to this one. I took it to a friend of mine who repairs clocks as it stopped working. He has found that the shaft of one of the cog wheels has worn away (a bit like a piece of wood that’s been turned in a lathe). I have photos and a video showing the problem. I’ve tried to find a replacement part but to no avail. Would you be able perhaps to give me some help to either recommend a repair or maybe u have a spare that I could buy from you? If you could offer some guidance I’d be so grateful😊😊. Many thanks in advance. Richard (from England)

Hi James, I have a question, which cleaner do you use to clean the brass plates of the clockwork?

Looks like you should be able to get this chronometer back up to snuff in short order. I have a Hamilton Model 21 and it keeps time like a quartz watch! I don't run it too often as it has to be wound every 48 hours - easy task on a ship, but not so much with my schedule.

I’ve done some experiments, the same oxidation appears. and gold coating comes off if you soak the parts in a really strong solution for too long.
@jamesmartin537021 күн бұрын
This was a clock from a farmer family in the Palouse area of Washington State. Owner said his relative always maintained this clock. We wondered if it was dunked farmer style in some unknown solvent then hung in the sun to dry. Also wondered if it was put in storage in a barn where it was exposed to ammonia fumes from animal waste? It was hands down the worst I have ever seen so had to take drastic de-oxidizing measures on this one.
@Cobesclocks3 күн бұрын
@@jamesmartin5370could be, there are lots of solvents that will surely damage the gold plating even in a short period of time

I'm always impressed by the detailed observation during inspection as well as the great care taken to avoid any scratching or marring of the surfaces. A worthy example. I wonder if the alterations to the clock were to allow this to be mounted in a different vehicle with a slightly different install setup.

I always find it interesting to see that, whereas other people will use finger cots, he simply never touches the movements at all (rarely before and never after cleaning) and uses tweezers for everything. By impression, this seems to me a very old school watchmaker's trait.

I learn something new from each one of your videos, so thank you for the online apprenticeship! It never occurred to me just how important keeping foreign materials out of the mechanism is when working on timepieces. When you were learning watchmaking, was cleanliness and care in the use of tools so as to prevent damage something they spent a lot of time on?
@jamesmartin537024 күн бұрын
Yes, Cleanliness was stressed, along with tools being in good shape. I see a lot of people using poor tools and dull screwdrivers that end up slipping on screw heads and causing a mess out of movements.

Thank you for the video. I liked it very much. Wouldn't it have been possible to silver solder the broken spokes?
@jamesmartin537024 күн бұрын
Right now the wheel is concentric and functioning as designed, keeping great time. Yes, it could be soldered. Wheel is made from work hardened brass, temp to melt a silver solder will soften the brass. Best fix is to have a new escape wheel fabricated. There are options available, decision is up to the owner.
