I've been listening to this song since I heard you sing it on AGT. Well, this morning, my dog passed. I held her until her last breath and I'm completely broken over it. I started to play this song, and the words have all new meaning for me. I know it was the right thing to do, but it will be some time before I'm at peace with what happened. This song hits so many of us for mostly the same reason. Kieran tells Simon and the other judges that he wrote this as a response to a quite recent bout with depression. I have depression in my family, luckily I was skipped (maybe?), but these words, these lyrics describe something quite different than depression. This song punches us ALL in the heart when it comes to a break up. Breaking up is probably one of the worst feelings humans can feel. Thank you Kieran for this masterpiece.

So the use of the 3/4 bars alternating with the 4/4 bars is a really powerful addition to the verses. It provides a driving emotion to each line that is already there in the lyrics but is accentuated with the technical aspect. Then as you alternate 2/4 and 4/4 in the chorus you create moments of pensiveness and moments of longing for moving on (or “disengaging”), once again further accentuated by the lyrics. We need more technically interesting writers out there who know how to use the music theory to their songs’ advantage. Perhaps one of the most beautiful songs I’ve got in my playlist.

I think this song could save lives. So many teenagers when breaking up think their lives are over. Many go into depression and some commit suicide. This song explains what many of us have gone thru and have felt and gives hope that all is not over and life will go on. A beautiful song and lyrics. I listen to this song many times a week.
