@@stebear58 According to the record label, Tami Lynn's version, which was a hit in 1971 in the UK, was actually recorded that year. Given that the musical arrangement is so similar to this one by Kiki Dee, I find it hard to believe, it sonds much older. but there you go.

My goodness !!!!!! My favorite girl has the chops !!!! Such a phenomenal delivery , NO ONE CAN HIT IT LIKE KIKI !!!!! Such raw emotion , she will always be one of the most gifted pop - rock and soul singers of all time. Sadly , sooooooo underrated by this stupid industry ! At least in her homeland she made her mark and is widely respected, right up there with "Dusty , Sandy" Lulu"....etc. No one has that kind of "authority" that Kiki possessed, especially in her early years. Her talent is boundless, her writing into the Seventies became quite deep and personal. She has performed in so many different settings and stages , always bringing forth a top notch performance. She remains very special to me ! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

This was a very popular song to say it wasn’t a hit is not to recognise that Tami Lyn’s version maybe more well-known and Kiki‘s excellent rendition wasn’t distinct enough from that for radio, dj’s and the buying public to pick up on her talent, not her fault. It didn’t stop her working at her craft and being picked by Tamla Motown for two of her later releases.

This song was written by Bert Berns, one time mentor of Van Morrison. He wrote many other hit songs e.g. 'Twist and Shout', 'Here Comes the Night' (recorded by Van's band in 1965, Them, a Number 2 hit in the UK), Hang on Sloopy, and many others. One reason Van Morrison never sings Brown Eyed Girl in his concerts is because even though he wrote it, all the royalties went to his then manager, Bert Berns. Berts died in late 1967, aged 38, around the time Brown Eyed Girl hit the US Top Ten.
