I love watching your videos, but I'd rather get one every six months where you loved it than regular ones where you're being worn down. Why not do Q&A's when you need a break? Literally film yourself on a couch answering our questions. Then you still get content up for the almighty algorithm, but you can also take two weeks off because you can probably do that one in a day.

I've been watching this movie when I am overwhelmed and artistically blocked since it was first released in the US, and I had 3 shitty jobs to put myself through college at the time, so some of the gen-xers are there too. Hi, I'm crying on my lunch break at work because this is too relatable. I had the same epiphany of sorts with Kikis about two years ago because of burning out, and I'm in the middle of burning out again with my work. I had already booked myself a week off at the end of the month (this our slow period) to really take a breather of some variety, but your description of that feeling that "if I work really hard now, and get those numbers up, THEN I can relax" and it never actually happening that way has been getting me super down I will be here to watch your videos, and I'll love them even more if you're rested and taking care of yourself. I wish the algorithm and these platforms that have you create content and make tons of money off of it just to give you a piece would be more generous. You deserve incredible, good things without having to break yourself to get them. Lots of love 💜💜💜

"The last video was supposed to be a way more ambitious one, but I was struggling to figure it out. So I swapped it out at the last minute with a simpler one... and even that was a challenge to finish." This whole video hit me real hard. Been feeling a lot of the exact same anxieties this year and it means a lot to know, at least, that I'm not alone in that.

Such a great video! Another thing I really loved is how Kiki is paid in the film. She doesn't have a set fee, instead she just kind of excepts what ever chum change people throw her way. And it's obvious that while her clientel apprieciates her, they also don't pay her that well, even though she acts like it in the film. There's this throwaway scene where Kiki sees some nice shoes, she wanna buy. But we never see her go back and get them. So she can't be making that much. As someone who has been working in the freelance writing industry for next to nothing for three years now, I'm properly projecting... But it still yet another element of this film that I love.

As a courier myself, I can relate. Especially when Kiki helps out that elderly lady around the house and is worried that she was overpaid. There've been times where I've received bonus tips without warning for being punctual and immediately felt guilty for getting more than the required value of what I was delivering.

There's something to consider about the sabbath. Its less about adhering to some obscure commandment and more about taking time to refresh for the week's work.
@segamble1679

Sabbath! That's an itch I can scratch, but if all you're doing is resting so you can be more productive, you're missing the point of Sabbath. Eugene Peterson calls that a "bastard Sabbath" (love that guy). Keep diggin' on the Sabbath thing, but hunt for more meaning than just "productivity" or "optimization". Blessings.

@@segamble1679 Rest can mean more than lack of productivity. Of course what Sabbath means is moving from the profane work week into the spiritual realm, letting the work week person rest and put your focus and efforts on different pursuits. Either way, it helps the rest of the week, which was my point.

The extra material on that Blu-Ray is delightful, especially if you're swedish. It has a nice japanese lady walking around Stockholm and Visby like it's a fantasy land. She imagines Kiki flying around the towns, asks shop owners about trolls and witches etc. Watch it if you haven't.

Patrick! You gotta take care of you. Loved your little homage footage to Kiki (like sighing on your parent's counter, and making pancakes), plus your parents are adorable and loved how they read the sponsored segment at the end! While having higher ambitions for each video is a good thing, quality vs quantity while improving is a hard balance. But when you were talking about the ever increasing runtime of your videos, I have to say that try to aim a limit for a video's runtime. Like for instance this video at 14:00 is perfect, anything that's longer than 25 minutes can be a chore for most viewers. I know it's more of an investment but have you considered maybe working with an editor? Kiki's Delivery Service is my favorite Ghibli film too, plus don't worry, I also cried recently during the "fly" scene as my recent struggles resonated those of Kiki's and of yours illustrated in this video when I was introducing the film to my nieces and nephews earlier this summer. Anyway always a fan of your videos and look forward to them, take as many breaks as you need to keep your mind sharp and from being overwhelmed. All the best.

This is a really important video for so many people to see, including myself. I'm just now leaving college and trying to get myself into a life where I work mostly for myself and produce art for an audience of friends and strangers. It's what I've always wanted to do, too. Hearing you talk about this, though, especially considering you have what I want, and hearing you talk about you struggle with mental health, it brings a lot of things into perspective. I mean, I also feel shitty about myself if I'm not constantly doing things with my time. That's a big reason I want the life I want. But again, I'm very happy to have seen this video. You're one of my favorite artists on the internet, and it feels like a personal letter (or maybe a diary entry?) on how to slow down and take care of yourself.

Thank you for sharing this, Patrick. I too had this exact same experience with both KZbin and Kiki. Early in 2018 I got burnt out trying to make this channel a full-time gig, it completely crippled my creativity and ability to work. In this time I rewatched Kiki and it taught me that you can't force it, and in time it will all return. And then I made a video about Fisherman's Horizon from Final Fantasy VIII and my KZbin burnout / anxiety, and what Kiki had taught me. I'm so grateful to hear your story and how much it parallels with my own. It's nice to know you're not alone.

It's sad that youtube favors creators that upload regulary, it forces creators to upload a video even if they have nothing to show or say. Maybe the algorythm should do the exact opposite. Personaly Im more liklely to watch a Video from someone I haven't seen in a while.

The reason I subscribe to Patrick and youtubers like him is that he takes his time with videos and they're always good. I like seeing his updates every few weeks and knowing it's gonna be interesting instead of getting weekly or bi-weekly updates of filler. So he can take his time with videos.

Started crying like a minute in because this movie is so important to me and I relate so much with you here. I don't think I go a single year without watching this movie. And I completely feel you on your experiences being burnt out and finding comfort in the film. I'm a freelance composer by trade but also work various gigs to make a living. I've gone through burnout so many times in the last few years and I'm only in my 20s. But the movie is always there to....serve as this kind of reminder that something isn't wrong with me, but is something that can just happen to anyone. idk I have a lot of thoughts about it but im not sure now is a moment where I can articulate them all. Anyway, point is thanks for the fantastic video. This is the first I've seen from you but I'll definitely follow what you done from here on. That said, take your time! Good luck with everything in the future!

By the way, I can't see _Up_ on the list of movies that made Patrick cry, which seems to me like a clear indication that he's A LITERAL HEARTLESS MONSTER, I kid you not (I do... partially). Seriously, though: take care of yourself, Patrick, that's always the number one priority.

" I think Spirited Away is probably Miyazaki's best movie... But this is my favorite " I literally say this phrase, THIS EXACT PHRASE, all the time. For the same reasons as you do, the relatability level is off the charts, great video !

Good for you. Life is far to short to throw years away due to stress and work. Your talent and intelligence are evident in every video you have, so all of us who are lucky enough to see them, will be here whenever they come out. Schedules are great as a road map, but don’t forget to sit back, look up from the map, and enjoy the fact your alive and the view of a passing world.

Great ending! I can really relate to the feeling, it is not easy forcing yourself to deliver on creative projects on a steady pace. I really enjoy your content and hope for you, that you find a good balance between writing and getting inspiration, because that is basically what the difficult bit is often. When you started you had tons of ideas, that you had been working on in your mind over a long period of time and now that well of inspiration is likely a bit dry, so you need to find new sources. Just like with any work, vacation is an important part of being able to stay productive. Wish you the best!

You're not alone brother! Parts of this had me clutching my chest with tears in my eyes. "Returning home after working late into the night and collapsing, canceling plans with friends because you're falling apart due to work and don't have the energy to interact with people". I HAVE to watch this film now. Thank you for this. Workaholics/ Creatives go through so much under the surface and for the longest we have ZERO to show for it. Take your time friend. Your work, efforts, creativity and experiences are important. We'll be here waiting for the alerts after you get some time to live your life ✌🏾

I want to Thank You so much for this video. Just yesterday I posted on FB how I'm feeling burnt out and questioning the worth of my efforts. Now I see my situation is not unique, and, more importantly, is more the product of the expectations I force upon myself due to the KZbin atmosphere. I need to find me a copy of Kiki's Delivery Service! Got to go and make my next video, but just want to say Thanks again!

Wow... I think you just voiced my problems right now. I’m an artist and I’ve been struggling to make more art and stress out when I’m not making more art and my energy has just dried up. I’m so glad you shared this video, I think it helps other creators not feel alone in their struggles.

So glad KZbin recommended this to me since I'm going through the same thing (working full-time as an illustrator in an office while working on a weekly webcomic and Patreon on the side). I really admire you for taking a break and explaining what you're going through -- it isn't easy for creators to admit their own limits. Creators build their whole identity around their passion and once that passion is gone, it's difficult to feel anything and perform like you once did. Take a break and recharge as long as you need! I'm gonna subscribe to you in the meantime! :)

For whatever it's worth (and I'm sure most of your subscribers feel the same) I love whenever I see a video pop up from you. I don't check how long it's been since the last one or count the days until the next one; it's just a treat whenever there's one there:) Put yourself first, take whatever break you need to and we'll be here when you get back:)

Thank you for this video Patrick. I've been struggling with depression for over a year, trying to finish school and juggling other responsibilities, and while I know that depression and burnout are completely different things, I do know how it feels to have no energy to do things and be with friends, and to not enjoy things you used to or "are supposed to". As a fan, I don't care how long your videos are, or how regularly you upload. Every video from you is an unexpected treat in my sub box, and I frequently go back to watch older videos. I know I don't speak for your entire audience, and I know how cruel and fickle the algorithm can be, but I think it's important that you take time to rest and pull yourself together. Keep making videos, makes them as short or as long as you want to; make them about comic books, or blockbusters, arthouse films, directors, writers, franchises; make them as frequently as you want to, or can, while taking care of yourself; make fun movies with your friends; make podcasts about things you love; keep making stuff, and I'll keep watching! Hope you feel better ❤
