I think the phenomena of indigenous people recognising each other is because v often people outside of indigenous families or communities have this preconceived idea of what a first nations person should look like, whereas people in those families and communities who see each other all the time recognise the diversity of features but also the common denominators that give away that someone is NA. That's why people respond so weirdly about the tone of your skin being so fair, because they have expectations of what you should look like, meanwhile it's a pretty vast range of features including skintone within even non-mixed first nations people that they wouldn't expect. But the aunties will always clock you, know that!

The facial features thing is correct for other communities too. I am black, when I meet other black Americans they won't know I am first generation and that my parents are African immigrants. But somehow African's can always tell, ALWAYS, that I'm African. Sometimes they even correctly guess I'm Congolese. It's wild to me.
