The most striking aspect of this scene is Hattori's friend, who in the previous scene played the part of the bumbling even insubordinate assistant. But in this scene his face and posture is that of a life long friend who understands exactly what the forging of this sword means. No argument no back chat, instead he plays his part in the ceremony flawlessly. The contrast between this scene and the sake scene is so striking it is heartrending.

Seriously? Is that how many folds it takes to forge a katana of superior strength?
@M0M01172 жыл бұрын
@@norbiesison9257 I’m not sure the exact amount of folds they have to do, but they have to do certainly a lot. They do it because Japanese ore has a lot of impurities in it, it’s not the best metal to make blades out of. So Japanese sword smiths perfected the technique of folding the metal several times to strengthen the blade. You can google it to get more info if you are interested. Edit: apparently a blade is folded anywhere from 8 to 16 times. It’s like folding a piece of paper, every time you fold it you have more layers, a katana that has been folded 10 times has apparently over a 1000 layers.
@CorwynGC2 жыл бұрын
@@M0M0117 1000 is what is often claimed. But remember that that is the number of layers, not the number of times it is folded (or a month would be a ridiculously short time). Fold one time, gives 2 layers, twice gives 4 layers, 10 times gives 1,000 layers.
@toddkes5890 Жыл бұрын
You also have to figure that folding enough layers turns the metal into a homogenous block, rather than the separate layers that hold an edge or dissipate stress as appropriate. The other detail is that the folding would work to make the lousy iron available in Japan better. From there you make different types of steel (hard for holding an edge, soft to handle impacts), and put them all together properly. Step 2 requires a few decades of work and study.

This scene is by far the most beautiful of both films. I always enjoyed the juxtaposition of introducing the assistant to us as a lazy soap opera watching bum but then suddenly this scene emerges and he is now obedient, deeply respectful, and somewhat sad. Over the years I've hoped that Quentin might give us 2 final films that tell the final stories of how Nikki takes vengeance on The Bride for killing her mother (new film 1) and how The Bride's grown daughter B.B. in turn seeks vengeance on Nikki (new film 2). But instead of killing Nikki in the final film she shows her mercy. That film would then end with a recreation of this beautiful scene that we now watch - wherein B.B. travels to Okinawa to return her mother's sword to a much-aged Honzo who tells her the same thing she told her mother - that "vengeance is a forest. And like a forest it is possible to become lost." But Honzo ends his soliloquy by telling her that in showing mercy, B.B. emerged from the forest that consumed her mother. The sword is then ceremoniously sheathed by Honzo's assistant. End with the same music and fade to final credits.
