It's insane how much better shot, edited, and choreographed this one sequence is than ANYTHING in The Matrix Resurrections. Look at how the action flows, the camera moves around with the actors. Cuts happen at a reasonable pace and match the action. Aside from the CG ghosts and stopped bullets, everything is practical effects and stuntwork. And this is just one scene, the trilogy is full of great action.

This scene is amazing not only because of the fight itself, but also because of how much Matrix lore is explored here without telling the audience anything, perfectly implementing "show, don't tell". Merovingian is a program from an older version of the Matrix, who lives by collecting other outdated programs and giving them shelter from agents who look for abnormalities to delete. All of his "men" who are fighting here are actually programs, not people. They all exist in human folklore as legendary creatures, because some people actually have seen them, before agents got to them or they flet to Merovingian. We learn Merovingian collects them because "they are hard to kill". And we actually see this, visualized: 1. *The twins are the "ghost" programs,* the most powerful ones, because it's almost impossible to kill them due to their phasing ability. During the chase scene we see they are even more talented in chasing Zionians than agents. 2. In the 3rd film we learn Seraph, who is *an angel program* (very powerful programs, capable of beating agents 1 on 1), was also once a property of Merovingian. We see another angel program here, it's the asian guy in white clothes and black glasses - similar attire to that of Seraph. He also dies last, which proves he really is hardest to kill of all programs Neo fought. Neo can kill any agent with just a few hits, which he displayed before. 3. *Next in the hierarchy of being "hard to kill" are vampires.* There are 3 vampire programs in this fight. All are dressed the same, in black clothes, with black sunglasses. If you played the canon Matrix game, you'll know that the only way to kill them is to impale them, like the actual vampires from the folklore. This is why they get up no matter how many times Neo hits them. Eventually, Neo figures this out, or just impales them by accident and they all die. First guy is impaled with a sword. Next with a trident, and the last one is hit with a spike from the large morning star by the angel guy. 4. *Least powerful are the werewolves programs.* They have no sunglasses, and they're dressed kind of randomly, that's how you can tell them apart from the other programs. Perhaps they do not wear fancy clothes and glasses because they'd be destroyed when they change anyway? Regardless, they are supposed to be more durable than humans, but clearly aren't that tough. Persephone kills Kain, one of them with a silver bullet, which is probably a way to bypass their durability completely, the other two go down when Neo hits them a single time, (one is kicked thru a statue and never gets back up, the other is hit with a mace) indicating they are even less durable than the agents.

@timmyn8or3 жыл бұрын
I think there are 2 common reasons for that. 1: modern actors often don't do their own stunts/fights, so cuts are made quicker and cameras are shaken violently to avoid showing the stuntman's face. 2: when they DO do their own stunts/fights, they only have them perform one move at a time and then change cuts. Whereas Reeves, Fishburne, and Weaving actually learned Kung Fu for the 1st Matrix, which gave them HUGE opportunities to choreograph fights, other actors have to pause, then take, then pause, then take, to cover up that they don't know the fighting styles their characters supposedly do. I also love the camera work in the Matrix movies, the direction on these films is excellent. But Matrix 2 has some choreography errors that bother me though, like how they "cross the line" at 0:48 , which is a great way to confuse the viewer, or using the same move of backflipping onto the stairs multiple times in one fight - going slow-mo each time as if it's a cool new move, when the viewer JUST saw him do that, or consistency issues, like which weapons characters are holding. Those are all minor errors of course, but it's something that has always made this movie feel off to me, cuz they do all of those in just about every fight in this movie. I wonder whose fault that is, since it's really only present in Reloaded.

Some Fun Facts: Keanu Reeves' stunt double here and the other Matrix movies, was Chad Stahelski. You may know him as one of the creators and the director of the John Wick franchise. Basically, John Wick & Matrix movies had the same stunt team. The Asian dude, with the cream coloured outfit, who gets killed last by Neo, is Tiger Chen. You may recognise him from John Wick 3, he's the guy who gets the knife in the eye. Keanu & Tiger are actually good friends and Keanu has directed a martial arts action movie, starring Tiger Chen, called ''Man of Tai Chi'', he also plays the villain in this and gets his ass kicked by Tiger for a change. Also, the fight choreography here was done by Yuen Woo-ping, legendary Hong Kong fight coordinator who has worked on tons of movies like the Ip Man series, Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, Kill Bill, tons of Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies etc. The actor who plays the ''Keymaker'', is Randal Duk Kim, who also appears in the John Wick movies as the doctor of the Continental, that treats John Wick's wounds in the first & third movie.

I agree, the fight intensifies as it goes on as it becomes progressively more challenging for Neo, having less opponents is actually more challenging to an extent as they have more space to cooperate rather than get in each other's way and close down Neo. The music represents this increased challenge very well with Neo being forced to move across the whole Chateau to gain distance from his opponents.

The highway chase music, the chateau fight music, the burly brawl music, the final fight between neo and smith? epic music = epic fights.

This is a perfect fight scene. Continuous attacks by all attackers instead of the main character fighting one or two while the others are like 20 feet away waiting to jump in… Each attacker is legit trying to kill Neo and they actually look like they know how to use each weapon, especially the spear dude. Best and most realistic spear handling I’ve seen in any movie this far. This scene was edited well and it really focused on why Neo is the One.

@orphandjones81933 жыл бұрын
yeah i either read on a wiki lore page once or it was explained in the movies i believe that he has been around since the start. All of those people fighting for him there including the ghost guys came from earlier iterations of the matrix that were more buggy/less perfect/ more surreal. Instead of letting them be deleted he survived and brought those fighters along with them (since theyre all obviously skilled especially the weird ghost twins). I believe both Merovingian and other popular characters like the train man, his wife the french girl, and other programs have existed in prior runs of the matrix as well. For example one of the scenes i recall in the matrix i think it was the indian couple and their daughter... sati? maybe? They were taking her to the oracle to be protected instead of being wiped by the machines in the matrix because she either wasn't serving her purpose or wasn't useful anymore. She is the same little girl who is with the oracle at the end of the third movie asking if neo will ever come back. Anyways, they were visiting him to basically save her because he had the ability to make that happen. I assume when a new matrix starts up a lot of the machine programs that live/run inside the matrix are earlier programs that existed before. Kinda like how we still had internet explorer(until recently) and microsoft word. ETC.

The Merovingian is a program. He was the operating system for the first matrix, which was a hellish world intended to constantly keep the human inhabitants in a state of fear. All of his henchmen are from that period. Ghosts, vampires, werewolves, they're all those myths were basically prototypes of the agents. The Merovingian's former position as an operating system for the matrix is why he can traffic programs, keeping them safe from deletion. His former role means that he understands the matrix better than anyone else apart from the architect. He knows how to hide programs from the system because he once was the system!

I just don't think those kind of albeit impressive and powerful and visually spectacular moves are quite the same as stopping a samurai sword mid swing with your bare hand.

Are you for real with this terrible reasoning? The movie DOES have great philosophical concept, it just wasn't fleshed out as best as it should have as I said. "The final movie was SO lazily written and anticlimactic it was almost sad to watch." It wasn't as "so lazily written" as you and others make it out to be. The movie didn't answer anything significant and seemed more towards the direction of lord of the rings/star wars by having big climatic battles which doesn't exactly fit for this series but I'd say it still was enjoyable to watch as the stakes WERE high in the film but the movie wasn't trying to tackles complex themes, just wrap up a climatic battle which, again, doesn't exactly fit with matrix when it first started. It's a different direction but it wouldn't say it's anywhere near "anticlimactic" at all unless you expected more complex answers which is a fair to expect and get an answer for but the movie was fun/exciting to watch for it's final fights. Nothing about the final moments of the film were "almost sad to watch" either, have NO idea what you're even saying when you say that at all. "Some scenes were downright cringe." What I like to think about is what these Exiled programs - the Merovingian's henchmen - were like in the previous Matrix versions. They're presumably remnants of the Nightmare version, in which mythological elements like werewolves and vampires made humans suffer. And the suits and sunglasses are presumably just to blend into this version. So I'm picturing them as vampire lords, armor-wearing and bloodsoaked, inflicting horrors upon the human peasants that live in the villages in their domains. Probably a far cry from what they look like now. I wonder if they had certain limits imposed upon them by that system when in operation. Like say...to not massacre too many chattel humans, lest it destabilise powerplant operations? And I wonder if the Merovingian has to check any sadistic tendencies they have whilst they're in his employment. Perhaps exploring the Chateau would reveal some grizzly sights.
