From Season 1 Episode 18 "Chariot of Gold": Bonnie is given the honor of joining the Helios society, whose members all have genius level I.Q.'s. This to Devon's chagrin, who was expecting a nomination himself, but has to be content with honorary membership. However, it soon becomes clear that high ranking members of the society are planning to ensure their own survival by committing the perfect crime. For this, they need to get their hands on Kitt and to get rid of its driver, Michael Knight.

Not really. Either Graham didn't know of some bottom layers of his software programming, or KITT couldn't be fully reprogrammed, because life protection function was hardware programmed. What is interesting, that KITT could recover his original software after life preservation function kicked in. This would suggest he had hidden backup drive and a programme that triggered software recovery after the system detected conflict of orders between new programming and his hardware programme. However, KITT clearly has the ability to learn. Knight Rider isn't very science correct, but I'd imagine the early episodes, basic KITT is mainly hardware programmed but he has ability to create evolving software to become his personality. Which eventually backfired because KITT also developed fear and would later give up easily, like someone who doesn't believe in own abilities.

its this scene thats made me think that wilton and the team who designed kitts AI that they made it to where if kitt becomes aware hes taken a human life then he shuts down against his will. but i know theres probably evidence to prove otherwise but its just a nice thought. but it really proves that kitt goes beyond his programming of protecting michael, he protects michael because he means so much to kitt.

My guess is that at 2:10 the mind-controlling drug inside Bonnie wore off. After that, she returns to normal and hugs Michael. My other guess is that between 2:00 and 2:10, the mind-controlling drug started to wear off. I’m happy that Bonnie fought the mind-controlling and returned to normal and hugged Michael.

I think this makes it pretty obvious KITT is “Three Laws” compliant at the firmware level if not even deeper, possibly physically built in to his processors. something reprogramming his AI could not overcome. They would have to take the entire computer unit out and replace it.

I remember loving this scene back when I was a kid. David always called kitt the Knight Industrie Two Thousand in this scene and impersonating Garthe Knight in Goliath when he said "The Knight Industrie Two Thousand will be a great memento of my triumph." to Elizabeth Knight and Sombe Kunah. Wondered why he didn't call it the Knight "Industries" two thousand. Funny in season 4 killer kitt, kitt was trashing Michael through a hot dog stand. Everyone thought Michael was dead on the floor before the commercial break. He didn't seem to have a dominant program limiting him from killing anyone at that episode.
