I disagree with your Vet. Guard/Death Korp Assessment. Yes, when it comes to your Orders will always use Move! Move! Move! in TP1 and Take Aim! TP2 onwards. But... You are only typically hitting on 4+ and your most common ranged and melee weapons are both 2/3 with absolutely nothing fancy 'built in'. It all comes from Gambits and Ploys. Like the Brood Brothers you have a lot of options to choose from which you will typically have to base on who and where your fighting. Like the Brood Brothers you have to be careful how and where you place them, because if they get hit they are going down. And if you lose your Comms you lose the ability relay your order and if you lose the Watchmaster/Confidant you no longer have access to said orders.

Yeah, they’re not a particularly “hard” team, but definitely not the same tier as Kasrkin. Kasrkin literally has most of the same abilities as Death Korps but with fewer restrictions - global comms, global faction buffs, 0AP heal, auto-detonating mine. DK has to choose between comms moving, giving +1 APL, or global orders. What death korps lack in terms of rule complexity is made up for by how important positioning is since everything is on a 3”-6” aura

I used to play tricky horde teams -- then I realized I really wasn't having a good time, even when I was winning. Switching to elites was huge for me because I don't feel nearly as much time pressure, and I don't feel like I'm calculating chess positions every activation.

What always confuses me about Meta discussions is why the top players take the top teams. Surely a good player can play uphill and should be running the weaker teams? That's a real show of skill, any fool can win with a bs list

It's because those top players typically become top players because they are interested in winning. When you're a top player and run into other top players at a tournament, the players running the good teams will win more, prompting everyone to eventually use the good teams or forfeit the podium. Of course there are always mavericks -- Chris Bacchi was running blooded in top tournaments when everyone thought they were awful... Until he started winning and people realized they weren't a bad team after all, just misunderstood. The reality is top players that don't play the best teams won't stay as top players for very long. I'm sure plenty of great players play fun lists in their local games all the time -- but when a gold medal at worlds or LVO is on the line, not running the best list possible is simply throwing in the towel.

The Mighty Ibex! Nice to hear from you again mate, hope you are keeping well. It is a massive flex when one of the really good players does well with a team that is not nailed on in the S-Teir, and it happens from time to time. I remember when Ace! won with Phobos, at a point when everyone thought they where dog dirt. And very recently at the Warhammer World weekender when Bart L won with Harliquins at a time when everyone and their dog thought you had to be running Legionary, Warpcoven, Necrons or Inquisition to have a shot at the top spot. You do love to see it when it happens!

I’m one of the better players in my group, and when I’m playing casual games locally I’ll typically be playing a mid to low tier team (lots of Kroot last edition for example). If I was going to go to an event though I’d want the best chance of doing well so I’d crack out a big boy team and start doing practice games. Also I really like Aldari, especially Harlequins and Mandrakes so if they are the filth there’s always a chance I’ll be playing them regardless.

@@TabletopImpulse doing well thank you, hope you are too. Hopefully we'll cross paths at an event one day! I might even get my Dwarfs or Murder Goats on the table one of these days. Coming at this from a primarily Heresy POV, the 'done thing' is to tone down your list if you are one of the more capable players but I suppose even the semi competitive events have more of a narrative feel.
