One of the best snowblowers ever made gets a second chance at life.
Impact Screwdriver JIS fits better than phillips: amzn.to/3WxKewD
Spark tester that shows strength: amzn.to/3HrYBhO
After Thoughts about the Video: Fixing this cost me $6.37. I actually picked this up from a diy guy who gave up on it(and another snowblower). He cleaned the carb and it still wouldn't start, so threw in the towel. I assume the previous owner killed it via starting fluid. These machines are way over built by today standards and are nearly 3x as thick steel. They take repowering with new/much larger engines amazing and there is no reason any one of these should ever be tossed out for a "new" machine. Not that it needs repowering as TECUMSEH is the best/easiest starting cold weather engine ever made. This being a points machine scares people but I find points rarely go bad and just need cleaning every decade or so.

Good video. 👍 My 1970s 2 stroke Toro snow blower would have corrosion on the points almost every year, I finally replaced the points with a little electronic module I got at the hardware store, no problems for the last 30 years. Ginger has a great personality, she is so loveable. 😍

The little points eliminator boxes are great. I used to put those in from time to time. I found the trick to points is they need to stay dry/no humidity. So I make sure the gasket is air tight and generally I get 10years. However I do live in a relatively humid free place.

I bought a sitting-for-years Kawasaki KLR250 dual-sport dirt/street motorcycle. The carburetor was gummed up I knew for sure. But sometimes, if you can get them started and running long enough to get warm, they clean themselves up. And that's what I tried to do with starting fluid... The hard knocking should have been a big clue for me to go easier on the speed-up-the-warming process. Anywho, the warm-up didn't help and I ended up pulling the carb for disassembly an a proper cleaning. Once back together, it ran perfectly. Although, during freeway rides I was getting a hell of a lot of oil in the airbox from blow-by. If I ran high speed long enough, I'd lose enough oil there was a risk of emptying the crankcase... Great! I pull the head and jug. I can't seem to find anything. Then, I spot it! I cracked one of the skirt channels between the rings. A section of piston aluminum was still in there like a perfect puzzle piece. While everything was out, I had the jug bored in addition to installing a larger piston. I had fun on that bike for a couple of seasons until it ended up in a deep mud hole swamping the entire engine. I roached everything trying to ride it home due to water intrusion to the crankcase. I sold the abused machine as a chassis-only purchase. ------ I don't use starter fluid anymore... One Summer I rode the bicycle around the neighborhood on trash day and cut off the propane BBQ grill bottle regulators. With a quick-disconnect on the regulator hose, I can now plug in compressed air blow nozzles an deliver propane as starting fluid. The setup works perfectly. Search KZbin for "starting fluid on steroids" for my video.

Great story. I have a small diesel in right now that they guy blew the top of the piston off with too much starting fluid. It can be a lifesaver but also a killer.

I have the same Toro 521, but the original engine crapped out several years ago, so I replaced it with a Harbor Freight 6.5 HP engine. It has run great since. I serviced the drive/clutch and augers two years ago. Used it for the first time this season last week. Started on the second pull and continued to launch snow about 30'. If the stock engine dies, the HF engines are < $150 when on sale. The only thing that needs to be modified is the crank shaft that rotates the discharge chute. I cut a section out to clear the valve cover and clamped on a section of high-temperature hose that flexes around the cover. The next modification I plan to make is to extend the second-stage impeller blades with thick rubber-like (from thick mud flaps or conveyor belt material) "wipers" to close the gaps between the blade and second-stage wall. Lastly, the bottom scraping blade and side risers are still available online. I got a replacement set, plus a spare set.

Why did the same on a 521 that I got for free. I believe mine is a much later model the original engine had a black shroud and black gas tank that did not have points. Mine also had pneumatic tires and a taller chute..

Nice! I love the old equipment. Tecumseh powered snowblowers are the best. That is what Tecumseh did best, imho. They made lawnmower engines for Craftsman, but their money maker was the 5 & 8 HP Snowblower engines. Easy to work on, easy to fix.

I'm a huge fan of the Tecumseh snowblower engines but somehow I dislike their lawnmower engines. I think they bid for contracts and had to cut corners to get the jobs. And it's just the opposite with Briggs as I hate a snowblower with a Briggs engine.

@@sixtyfiveford I think they built lawnmower engines just to keep their people employed in the off season from making snowblower engines. I do have a Monster od a Snowbird 11/33 with a Briggs 25 CID on it that I love. But my overall favorite to work on is the HS 50.

I find these between free to $100. Sometime they are even running. The usual repair is just a carb cleaning, replacing starter rope, sometime a stuck valve. Did not have any with a blown head gasket yet. I get many craftsman / Briggs engines with blown heads. I like TECUMSEH engines. A lot of whining on line about them but I will take them in all day long. Stay well, Joe Z

Crazy story but back in the early 70's while in grade school, I mail ordered a couple of hand impacts from JC Whitney on a BOGO sale, gave the other to my dad for Christmas. JCW back then, besides sending a money order along with mailing the order form, did not list ANY brand names of their products in their catalog at that time (later they obviously did). It was decades later when I realised that the hand impact that I still own today, was a quality Vessel brand!

it is always nice to bring old equipment back to life. i picked up a fairly clean toro 5/24 last year that would have likely gone to scrap had i not ended up with it. piston was about 1/4" from the top of the cylinder and water clearly got into the engine with how much crud and corrosion had built up in the cylinder. cleaned it out as good as possible and hit it with penitrating oil. it broke free eventually. the bore didn't look perfect but after cleaning the carb and points it seemed to run real good and didn't seem like there was much if any blow by which actually surprised me.

Mine has been nothing but trouble. It used up the belts, the power transmission wheel thinger, start rope, and even the worm gear all with hardly any use. I spent most of my time with it repairing instead of blowing snow. It refused to run down hill for a time. When it did run, the snow was usually too much for it (too wet/deep/icy). I hope my grandfather got more use out of it before he gave it to us.

Even when they run great those motors are just a little under-powered for the deep and heavy/wet snow; just a little more work than it can easily handle. For me, instead of dropping more time/money replacing the carb, fuel lines, muffler, etc. I'm doing the Predatpr 212 swap. These old v;pwers are "built like a tank" and seem far better built than newer models. Having 30% more power from the Predator swap (from 5hp to 6.5hp) should make it a nice little work horse and it should last another 20+ years. :)

I picked up a new gasket for $6 and the old one had a large hole in it. These engine are such low compression(6:1) that they need very little help from things like copper/aluminum paint coat. For car engines with coolant passages etc the paint can really help seal and or give reassurance.

Got one of these going last Year. Problem couldn't sell it. Because nobody wanted a 40 Year Old Snow blower. Fine for personal use, but I've already got a newer Model.

People don't want 10year old snowblowers. Stuff is such junk these days I have to omit the age unless they ask.

I keep forgetting, but I've heard leaf blowers work great, and I have around four of them way up North. Help, made a dash cover to stick on my rebuilt shattered Chevy dash out of treadmill tread and realized at the last moment that is like silicone sprayed nylon, tape doesn't even stick. It tried cleaning it with acetone, got any ideas?

Contact adhesive? That stuff bonds most anything, though I haven't tried it on silicone. Maybe silicone caulk.

@@sixtyfiveford Thanks, I guess it will have to wait till warm weather or scrub it in the bathtub with dawn dish soap. Just wasn't thinking, I was too excited that I found something, the black velvet and rubber cement worked for three years. I'm one of those that actually watch the road and can't stand reflections, or today's inconsiderate drivers that leave their brights on. The whole thing was an ordeal, even had to make a screw jack tool to get the wipers off so I could use the vent as a pattern.

I've never heard of blowing a head gasket by using starting fluid. Was going to say a mouse nest on head, but looks like most of the fins don't have much of a cover over them.
@sixtyfiveford

Ether makes any fuel extremely easy to combust. So the combustion can/will happen before the piston crests and essentially slams against the piston. So a piston moving up is instantaneously slammed back down, reversing the rotation of the crankshaft. This bends connecting rods, cracks the piston and blows out the head gasket. I have a engine right now that the top of the piston is blown off due to starting fluid.

I have an old 5/24, it is a tank. I hate the shifting/clutch is one control on the bars, so you have to let go of the left bar to shift or pull it out of gear via a shift knob....dangerous. Nobody wants to buy it, lol. Does that one have solid tires?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the super hard solid tires. The only thing good about solid tires is being able to throw a couple hex head screws in them for traction.
