Restore Kawasaki Generator sitting for 20+ years

Kawasaki Ninja; Okay not a Ninja but it may have helped their sells if they marketed it that way. Virtually identical in form and function of the two other generators coming out of Japan in the 80's. Though I think it lacks the refinement the Honda EX1000 and Yamaha EF1000 had of the era.

Nice little generator, smashing recovery and clean up :-D People often give up too easy with simple petrol engines, a bit of diagnostics and it's usually a silly problem. You have become Mustie1's right hand man. I call him " The engine whisperer." :-)

They can be frustrating to work on when your just learning and or if you just trying to fix the one machine you own. Generally when they fail it's catastrophic. I will say the worst times I have with small engines though is when another person has attempted and failed to repair it. It throws my diagnosis off because I have to fix their mess up and the original problem.

@@sixtyfiveford Right. Gas is the best thing I've found for cleaning stuff up with. A gallon will go a long ways and is good for killing weeds when it's worn out!

Great video as always! Thank you! A few years back I bought a little generator cheap. I said let's see it run. Now I'm not real smart about these things like you. I figured his machine, let him show me how to run it. He pulled about 20 times-nothing. I figured I've got some real smart friends. I said $20 cause it doesn't run? He took it. I took it home. Read and followed the instructions. Flip this, pull that. It started on the second pull. Nice little machine. Not all of my purchases have worked out this well :-(

The Japanese JIS actually fit better in US Phillips than our own screwdrivers. The JIS is more square with sharper edges vs the slope the Phillips has.

You do have to be careful with wd-40 and decals. If the decals are sealed, no problem. If not, wd-40 will eat at the adhesive. Wd-40 lists one of the uses as a decal remover. I used it for that before. Also noticed you did not leave it on very long so normally should not be an issue. Awesome video btw.

I'll echo that. On the metal decals, it doesn't do so well, but I do use WD-40 on every decal I have. You can soak the metal ones in it and it will eventually eat under them.

It makes sense if you soaked it long enough. I have used WD40 to remove the goo left behind under decals.

Great video. My Kawasaki 2900 was purchased in 1981 and it cost $881. Pretty expensive compared to a 3000 watt one in 2022. I had the engine running right before Hurricane Nicole, but it got wet and wouldn’t start when I needed it. Went through these steps and got it running. No one offers the correct fuzzy air filter, so I made one from an Amazon vendor. Dust isn’t a big problem during and after a hurricane. Thanks for a helpful video.

I have and still use the Kawasaki KG900 240 volt generator my father purchased back in early 70s. It looks exactly like yours. It usually always starts first pull and runs about three hours on a tank of fuel. Top quality reliable bit of kit.

I just revived the same generator I bought at a yard sale 6 years ago. Same thing a little carb work and it ran great. Used it a lot out in the boondocks to build a camper van. It sat for the last 5 years again. Cleaned althe fuel tank and carburetor. Replaced fuel shut off with a filter. Runs great again. The motor doesn’t turn down with the diAl. Been running a 2000 watt inverter but I will keep this thing around for emergencies because they are coming. Great video thanks.

600 running watts is small and is definitely the smallest generator I've ever had in the shop. When these were made you wouldn't be able to run much beside a few incandescent lights. Now days you could run nearly 50 100w equiv LED bulbs. These really excel at charging 12v batteries though.

Most of the old gas powered welders just need engine work. Just make sure the windings/wires are charred and dead as I have seen a few of those.

🇨🇦The knock may be a carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. Motors with high hours will have a carbon deposits in the combustion chamber and can come in contact with the piston at TDC causing a knock noise. I have seen it many times with RV gen-sets. Remove the head and scrape the carbon out or use a combustion cleaner product like Mercury Power Tune or Honda Combustion Chamber Cleaner sprayed into the intake while running (follow directions on can) 🇨🇦

This type of stuff is pure gold in a few years and people realize that the stuff in the last 10 to 15 years is absolute junk more and more of this stuff will go up in value people just give this stuff away just toss it in the trash and it's built so well if you just know how to freaking do a little bit of maintenance to it you need to maintain everything everything that has a first start pool as a gimmick maintain your stuff simple by old stuff maintain it actually don't buy old stuff let me get it for free from the people throwing it away thinking it's junk

I installed an 18 volt lamp into my 12 volt test light, a bulb that is used in a 18 volt cordless drill, hoping it would work on both 12 and 24 volt battery systems. It works fine. About 3 bucks on ebay.

Ginger the generator doggie jumping it off with no cables! I run Delo or Valvoline diesel formula 15/40 in all my stuff. The 30 seems a little thin and the diesel formula keeps them extra clean and Brian Bloc said that Delo was the only other oil but Deer that was put together for flat tappets. Diesel oil is great and is designed to take high heat way better than automotive multi grades. I really like the high zinc content. I just get so many engines that people put 5w30/10w30 in that smoke or are noisy. The base stock is 10w with added modifiers to allow it to thicken once warmed up. The problem is if it overheated it will break down and become 10w at every temp. We all know air cooled engines run much hotter than a liquid cooled car. For summer use straight 40w would be the most ideal but sae40 is impossible to find.

I picked up 2 similar machines, a 650 and a 1000 watt for only 50 euro's Got them both running, thanks to your video. Only struggled with the inner bolt form the carburator. Had to make a special wrench to loosen it but succeeded in the end. Just one question: I have the same problem with the light bulb, it is going bananas without load. I have one of those but the KG1000B it has no spark, iv puller the fly wheel cleaned the points, not sure how to check the magneto coil or that compositor thing.

Dirty points or bad condensor; in that order are the number one reason for no spark. Rarely is a coil bad. The points/condensor are consumable items but the points can be cleaned where if the condesor is bad it needs to be replaced. The only way to test a condensor is with a capacitance meter(MFD). However points/condensor are not easy to find for these. You can use a condensor from pretty much any small engine brand to replace the oem but the points are unique to the machine.

Install a fuel shut off valve, then test it monthly with super non ethanol gas.Run it dry. When you need it it’s one less hassle to start up.

Janet Yeoman - I drained the gas completely from the unit. Even though I StaBil all my gas, the likelihood of me needing the generator is slim to none. I live in a city. If the power goes out it's usually for an hour or two. And that hadn't happened in twenty years.

Randomly dying is generally a low oil shutdown. If the engine has a low oil shut down on the right-hand side just disconnect it and try.

Is there anyway you could put a alternator with built in regulator on one of those to make a 12volt generator out of it? I've worked on small engines for over 35 years but I'm poor at fixing the generator part. 😆

Of course. The biggest issue is once you remove the old generator head you have a tapered shaft on the motor. I've have a video where I grind down the taper to a standard straight shaft so I could mount a pulley.

Why the preference for Krylon vs Rustoleum?

Basically Rustolem takes too long to dry but here's my input: Krylon dries in 5-15 minutes and doesn't fish eye as much as Rustoleum. It's cures as fast as the solvent evaporates and doesn't require as clean of surface as Rustoleum. Rustoleum is an oil based alkyd enamel and will take hours to a few days too dry depending on temperature. It's a chemical reaction that drys/cures it and it needs heat to kick it off. I've used alkyd enamels in the early winter(40-50F) and came back a week later and it wasn't dry. This leaves it too susceptible to get debris, finger prints etc in it. Also Krylon can be recoated/touched up at any point, where Rustoleum if done at the wrong time will peel/wrinkle the original finish requiring a complete strip down(recoat before reaction has started or only after fully cured). However, Oil Alkyd Enamels (Rustoleum) are a stronger finish and if you have time and heat(70F+ for hours) then it's better. For small equipment though generally I'm covering an existing black paint to freshen it up and don't need a strong finish as the base paint is still there.

I just watched a video from Mustie1 where he fixed one of these under the "PowerMate" name. I guess his would have been made for PowerMate by Kawasaki because the engine was Kawasaki.

The Powermate was actually a Coleman brand. So likely Coleman just bought bare engines from Kawasaki and manufactured the rest of the components. This is typical with all generators sourcing the engine from engine manufacturers.

What about if no spark coming from spark plug wire??

First, make sure the kill wire isn't killing the spark(just disconnect it). If that is a no go clean the points(if it has them).

I hooked up a 12v battery and it was charging it great. These generators charge 12v batteries so much faster than a plug in charger.

Yep, WD40 is my go to spray. I have used it for years to clean Bank vault doors using a scotch bright pad. I have heard that old folks use it to spray on their joints to ease arthritis pain. Apparently it works because a local hardware store sails out of WD-40 3rd of every month when the government checks came out. Just sayin.

Ha Ha, WD40 works great for fishing too, just spray on your hooks a worm and fish bites.
