All footage seen on YT about the unreleased Killer Instinct game for Super Nintendo containing much more animation frames than the retail version. Why we did suffer such cut? (...) I Asked Ken Lobb without luck, but this question is always in my mind.

WHOA.......... i cant imagine this is running on a snes!!? that is fucking incredible. the snes capable of such fluid arcade quality renders... some characters look more animated then in the arcade. just damn amazing!!! if this is how the game looked when ported to snes back in the day... almost like coming home to ultra 64. lolz epic. i hope this rom is found/released someday. along with ki2 snes proto.

It seems like this ROM doesn't have any voice sound effects for the combo announcements. I remember previews from magazines at the time lamented the absence of the announcer and showed screenshots with the weird circle patterns on the rooftop stages, so I can only assume they were playing this build or close to it. Since final game ended up having the announcer, if I had to guess, I would assume that cramming all the announcer voices in there for the combos and supreme/awesome victory announcements meant they had to cut back on sprite animations to fit it all in.

If you watch around 4:10, the game slows down during the ultra. I'm guessing the animation frames had to be reduced in the final version in order to prevent slow down during larger/faster combos.

First time i see this video, when it was hiding? I always thought that this version lacked the rest characters but probably i was wrong. Something will be missing from this rom for sure, there is no reason to remove frames if space wasn't a problem. Someone must search the retail rom for these sprites. Also i see sprites are bigger (Glacius for sure)
@ElCocheFantasticoYT

I Think that rom for sure is having twice the ROM size even with the missing characters, then trimmed the animations and add the rest of content ot fit in 32 MBits, I am pretty sure that if they would have use SDD-1 technology or a larger cart for this occassion we would have enjoyed that animations... the game is so close to the arcade :-( And now with the MSU-1 chip it could have been possible to add FMV and CD-Music... it would be like the arcade without 3D backgrounds :-(
@gizaha
@gizaha 6 жыл бұрын
I've already did the patch for msu music, it's on zeldix.net. In order to put fmv and fmv backgrounds it's a bit more trickey, but possible. But after all, the snes in stock hardware is capable enough for playing Ki like the arcade. It's only about rom size. The only thing i'm not sure it can do is 3d backgrounds at 30fps (although in this current e3 video, fx fighter is running good, but i'm not sure if it was from snes or pc dos).
@ElCocheFantasticoYT
@ElCocheFantasticoYT 6 жыл бұрын
The background on the arcade you know, pre-rendered stuff vs background layers, it's impossible to "emulate" it like the music. I think the "Winning" FMVs will be tricky also as it's not an static image, it's composed of an image and a text layer and don't know if the msu-1 allow video overlay with layers. Having the music and the FMVs for the winning poses would make me buying a sd2snes, hahah :-) Great job on the patch! ;-)
@gizaha
@gizaha 6 жыл бұрын
First of all forget the msu as playing music only. This is the easiest application of itself. You can hack the rom to read tilemaps (bg or sprites) from msu address. You can stream tilemaps to stage bacground bg1 and turn the screen to mode 3 for 256color background. Then you can have fmv stage background.

I realized that this rom was only for impress demo at E3. Probably bigger than 32mb. In pointer table 95240 and 96070 i found tons of deleted sprite addresses, so that beta rom i guess has almost twice the sprites.

This is why they should have released SNES CD with Super FX2 chip/2x CDRom/4 meg ram in late 1994 so we could of had an amazing home port of KI1 basically arcade perfect. Also SNES CD unit should be stand-alone but also play standard SNES games hence the name. Retail for 249.99 with SNES Mario All-Stars compilation disk as pack-in.

Wow, I've never seen this version until now. I know the announcer voice is iconic, but I would rather have the most animation frames, because when the game LOOKS choppy, it also FEELS choppy to play. On a side note, I went to a theme park in the mid-90s and their arcade had an early version of SNES Killer Instinct set up, a few months before it released. Now I'm wondering if it was this version.

This was probably being run on a dev board or cart that did not have the space constraints the final had. It's likely the went with a cart with much less space for the final build the obvious reason of production cost. Carts and rom space was expensive in the day.

Interesting fact: Killer Instinct 2 was originally planed for te SNES, there even has been an extra KI2 Card in the Club Nintendo magazine!! But it was canned because SNES' hardware would have been too weak for it! Instead they took the source code and pumped up the speed and the soundtrack! The result was what we know as Killer Instinct Gold! The graphics where very weak for Ultra 64 levels because it was originally planned to be a SNES game!

KIGolds graphics where relativley poor compared to other fighting games even on the weaker Saturn and Playstation Beat'em ups because it was made for SNES in mind.

According to devs, those versions ran on real snes hardware but with larger memory dev carts. The game even struggles in some points when some combos are done. The memory cuts were done later. The sprites missing could be filled as their memory positions are still residing in the game, but with the sprites cut in animation
@chucks9999

Nothing new to add but towards the end of the SNES lifecycle Rare was bumping into the constraints of 4MB carts; they weren't the only ones with this issue (see Capcom). While the SNES supports larger ROM sizes; I imagine most didn't see it worth the increased risk/cost, especially with more promising technology right around the corner. This mindset would also explain the cancellation of two other Rare projects in 1996. It is a shame we didn't see much bigger games being released for the console but game development is expensive, and so were the logistics behind advertising and shipping of the product.

No, from a commercial point of view it would be uneffective (you don't release a product with less quality thinking about the next one in a "what if" scenario); what I think happened was that the game here was not running on snes hardware, and it was just a demo they then ported to the snes and then did the compression to fit it into the cartridge and they prayed it would run.
