Backstory to this, Hisako as a character died when her village was burned down, and now she's back from the dead to enact revenge. A couple tidbits of fun info: the crying in the mid of the song is actually Hisako, in japanese folklore the type of demon she is cannot say the same word twice hence we the song does it so much to show her limbo between living and dead, and as you'll see in all ki songs they incorporate the main theme here it's the creepy lullaby

Yup that not being able to say the same word twice thing is why Japanese people often answer the phone as "Moshi Moshi" . Old superstitions don't die.

The other thing is Mick Gordon was actually aware of this fact and deliberately made a point with many of the lyrics being spoken twice. But I mean, Mick Gordon. Kind of a badass with the soundtracks he makes. Edit: Also there's no 4th floor in hospitals. A superstition with the way 4 is said in Japanese, "Shi". It can also mean "Death". So they often skip floor 4 in certain places. Superstitions are powerful things.

Slight correction: Hisako died defending her village, but taking up her father's Naginata after he also died was the sparking action that rallied the rest of her village to fend off the foreign invaders. They built a shrine in her honor believing that even in death she was watching over them and protecting their home. Hundreds of years later this is proven 100% true when Ultra Tech starts desecrating the abandoned grounds, causing her to rise as a vengeful spirit hellbent on slaying the person responsible for the vandalization, Aria.

She's technically not a "demon" per se, she's an Onryo, which translates to "Avenging Ghost". She's literally a ghost that was roused from her rest by the destruction and desecration caused to her village and shrine, and she is particularly pissed off about her father's sword being stolen. So her primary goal is to get her father's sword back and kill whomever was responsible for it's theft in the first place. Hisako is the same sort of entity as Sadako in The Ring. And when you piss off an Onryo, they won't stop coming until they have killed you, and they're pretty much impossible to stop, so if an Onryo is on the prowl, the best thing you can do is to basically just get out of the way and don't get between them and their target(s). In a way, you could actually compare Hisako to someone like Ghost Rider from Marvel, where she's pretty much indestructible (since she's already dead) and she relentlessly pursues those who have wronged her or desecrated her burial site/village, but if you stay out of her way and you aren't involved in whatever pissed her off, she will leave you alone.

Fun fact: Though I'm not sure if it's this particular video of Hisako's theme, there's one where Hisako gradually gets closer and closer to the screen throughout the song and it isn't really until the end where you realize she's gotten much, much closer without you knowing.

Truth be told, I am more of a fan of the older killer instinct games. I think they came out like in the mid to late 90s. However if you have Xbox game pass it’s on there for both Xbox and PC.

Hisako is pretty much like the girl from the ring and also like the girl from the grudge. They're all onryu. An onryu is a vengeful spirit in Japanese folklore. Since they were alive at some point, they'd yurei instead of yokai. An onryu is probably one of the most dangerous types of ghosts in folklore altogether. They're more akin to a curse. If you're familiar with Norse folklore, there are some similarities with a draugr. There are key differences but much like an onryu, draugr are pretty much bound to the world of the living due to stuff that happened while they're alive even though a draugr is bound for being a terrible person in real life while an onryu is bound because a betrayal directly or indirectly resulted in their death. A draugr is also a corporeal walking corpse while an onryu is an incorporeal ghost. Basically, a draugr is bound is bound because he screwed himself while an onryu is bound because someone else screwed him. If you want an interesting read, look up the folklore of various cultures, especially with undead, demons, and fey. You'll see some wild shit.

@@MrJhound4 Something a bit more "Tame" (albeit tragic) would be to look up the Leanan Sidhe, a type of Fae/Fairy from Celtic folklore. They're generally friendly, peaceful, and benevolent beings who mean no real harm, but they are ultimately beings of Power, Sorrow, and Tragedy. They're technically a sort of "vampire", where they feed on the life force of mortals (albeit unwillingly) who have been granted their blessing. Their blessing is usually only granted to artists and craftsmen, and that blessing grants them inspiration and talent at the cost of drastically shortening their lifespan. The tragedy comes from the fact that a Leanan Sidhe will very often fall in love with the recipient(s) of their blessing, but because of that blessing the object of their affections will be doomed to suffer an early death. Even worse, a Leanan Sidhe cannot be seen, heard, or touched by humans, so not only can a Leanan Sidhe ever truly interact with the people they love, but they will also have to watch helplessly as they inevitably die an early death. And as the Leanan Sidhe is immortal, they will then never get to see the people they love again once their deaths have come. Look up Redcurrant from the Ancient Magus' Bride anime. She is a very well-done and accurate portrayal of a Leanan Sidhe (where, on those rare occasions that she encounters humans who can actually see and hear her. she is very curious, friendly, and playfully mischievous). Redcurrant is only a part of the anime for a short time (as she's technically a side character), but her portrayal still makes her very memorable and sympathetic.

Technically, she's not even a demon, she's a type of ghost. She's an Onryo, which translates to "Avenging Ghost". As long as you haven't done anything to piss her off, then you have absolutely nothing to fear from her, she'll leave you alone entirely. Piss her off and she will chase you to the ends of the Earth if need be to make you pay for it. If Hisako is ever gunning for you, then you've clearly done something to deserve it. That's why, despite her eerie and creepy "vibe", she's by no means a villain, at worst she's Neutral, and at best she's one of the "good guys".

Village of Whispers was one of the few songs from KI that genuinely made me emotional. Mick Gordon really nailed it. I love the character and her story and Mick was able to really tell the story with this track. Edit: Yeah the resemblance between Hisako and the girl from The Ring is intentional. You'll notice that every character (minus guest characters) are all fantastical movie tropes. We got the Monk, Femme Fatale Secret Agent, Vampire, Lycan, etc.

I think my favorite thing about the Killer Instinct OSTs is not only are they great in their own right but they are also have a dynamic element where as you perform stronger combos the music will then transfer into the much harder form. In Hisako's theme you can notice it when it shifts after the creepy singing part. I believe the shift happens after you perform an Ultra-combo? Been a long time since I played KI because I have absolutely not ability to play these kinds of games anymore.

Killer instinct...that brings back a lot of pleasant memories. Truth be told, Sabrewulf was the whole reason I even got an Xbox One in the first place. I was attending SGC in Dallas when they first announced the game. Saw my boy, 'Wulf, and was instantly sold. Far as the soundtrack goes, Maya's will forever be my favorite. A fun suggestion from the random voice in the crowd, the Blazblue OST is pretty freaking awesome and I would personally recommend the "X-Matic" and "X-Matic II" tracks from Continuum Extend and Chronophantasma games respectively. By far my favorite tracks through the whole series.

Fun fact about the Killer Instinct soundtrack. If you and the opponent remain idle long enough, the game will play a Easter egg remix of classic themes for the original roster. The newcomers will have the Killer Instinct leitmotif mixed with the character's theme.
