Killer Klebsiella

Hello everyone! I am a graduate student in the Microbiology and Immunology Department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Bacteria are a diverse group of single-celled organisms that are found all around us. These organisms are found in the soil, in the ocean, and even in the human body. Bacteria are vital for human health and millions of bacteria are found on our skin, in our mouth, as well as in our intestines. Organisms like bacteria have basic units of genetic material called genes which carry information and can lead to function. As part of my research, I focus on a species of bacteria called Klebsiella pneumoniae. This bacterium is commonly found in the environment and has become one of major concern due to its ability to cause infections that are becoming increasingly difficult to treat. Specifically, I am interested in understanding the role of specific Klebsiella genes that are associated with Klebsiella infection in hospitalized patients. The ultimate goal of this research is to increase our knowledge of Klebsiella to inform the development of urgently needed new treatment strategies.
