Spiral of silence is a theory originally proposed by German political scientist Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann in 1974. It is defined as: The increasing pressure that people feel to suppress their opinions and views when they believe they belong to the minority. At the heart of the theory and the most important component of the spiral of silence is: Fear of social isolation. Noelle-Neumann also explains that : In order to avoid being isolated, people try to observe their surroundings and they try to figure out which opinions and behaviors prevail.
The purpose of my project is to find patterns and better adapt social technologies to support peoples' voices. Find the features of social media (e.g., anonymity, community, hate speech control, selective disclosure, content censorship) that influence this and adapt to better support. This would enhance the social media experience for all the people, increase the social implications of social media, reduce harmful speech and easing social tensions.
