Today, I am taking a stab at the DC Multiverse Gold Label Mister Zsasz action figure by McFarlane Toys to see if this serial killer makes the cut.

This figure is like a parody of a Hasbro Marvel Legends figure. Just the same reused buck with an incredibly mediocre paint job, and cast in glossy cheap looking plastic. This line has gone so far down hill.

It’s honestly more tribute than parody at this point. I remember in the early days of DC Multiverse, when there were only a few figures, Shartimus did an interview with Todd where he praised him for never reusing parts, unlike Marvel Legends. Todd sheepishly said something like “Well, I would only do it if it made sense…” Right then, I knew he had a ton of future part reuse planned and we were going to be in big trouble.

Honestly wild to see this figure and then look at the new Hulkbuster or Ghost Rider or Carnage, all looking incredibly well put together barring maybe a wash. Then you see whatever this is.

Not to mention that Zsasz is usually NEVER this buff. I expect him to be on the thin side with a rather long neck. The whole figure looks cheap. Why? Because he’s supposed to be scarred. But that would require a lot more effort in sculpted details. DC Direct had a Zsasz with sculpted scars and it was from 2011 for Arkham Asylum/City. This looks like a guy (Cody Rhodes is a fair comparison) cosplaying as Victor Zsasz.

Like Hasbro still puts out a LOT of crap, but their average quality is creeping upwards and they're coming out of nowhere with these amazing releases that don't even look like they're from the same company. Someone over there gives a shit. It's not everyone. Probably not most of the people actually in charge. But somebody is trying. I feel like anyone at McFarlane who ever gave a shit is long gone.

That’s my favorite look for Zsasz. He looks just like Norm Breyfogle’s art. So many people are hating on it when it looks just like his art. I think this is a great release.

Agreed! I get the frustration with the scars not being sculpted, but for this particular version of the character I am happy

I’m curious, since you do so many head swaps, did you ever have any neck peg snaps? I only ask because I’m ALWAYS nervous when popping heads off, Legends especially, so I wanted to hear your experience.

I have never had one snap, but I have accidently bent or warped a couple so badly I decided to not swap them again for fear of breaking. When it doubt, always play it safe and use heat. I always have a hair dryer and a pair of plyers on hand when doing swaps

I got this figure yesterday. Ordered it directly from the McFarlane toys store. Beside the one from Gotham Select I dont think we've had lots of ZSASZ figures in the past. Or maybe there was one from the Arkham series? It's a cool addition nevertheless. It also has some customising potential. It sure looks good to make a John McLane figure out of it. The more we get from the Norm Breyfogle era the merrier.

This Zassz figure looks like WWE star Cody Rhoads, and I would like to compare him with a Mattel WWE Cody Rhoads figure just to see if my theory is correct.

I didn’t pick him up, nor will I. I’m just not interested in this version of paying for that little of figure. He does remind me of The Corinthian from Sandman with that head sculpt, which was the only temptation I had.

Zsasz is an interesting villain to use, usually making a Bat Fam member struggle to break that "no-kill" rule. He works well with the early 90s figures, and probably a few "modern" Bat Fam characters like Batgirl (Cassie Cain) and Robin (Damian Wayne). I'm a bit surprised he's yet not encountered Cass. Though his encounter with Damian in Paul Dini's Streets of Gotham run was perfection. Though that Tim Drake "90s" Robin looks SOOOO wrong. I kind of wonder how the new one will scale?

The torso is new but the lower half is Jon Kent, so that should give some idea as to scale. Great observations!

Zsasz (to me, at least), is definitely one of Batsy's more underrated villains. Not so much a D-Lister, like say, Kite-Man or Condiment King, but we definitely don't see as much of him as other villains, like Mr. Freeze, Two-Face or Joker. So, as a lover of classic Bronze Age/Knightfall era comics, I definitely wouldn't mind adding this figure to my collection. That's not to say it's without it's flaws or imperfections, but I'm willing to keep an open mind regardless. Awesome review, as usual, Jason. Definitely made the *cut* if you ask me 😂👍🏻🔪.

1:50 I'd be kinda cool if the amount of people he killed correlates to the amount of money he lost when he gambled it all away! Like each life taken represents each dollar and cent he lost. 2:14 I know the weirdo sunglasses and cartoony tally marks are accurate to the comics but they just don't translate well into figure form, this genuinely would've been a good opportunity for Todd to take some more gruesome and realistic liberties with adapting the design. I'd rank Zsasz just below Two Face honestly, they're both just human criminals with mental disorders based around disfigurement, but Zsasz doesn't have the reputation or resources that Harvey does.

I never realized those were supposed to be sunglasses. In the debut story arc for Zsasz (shadow of the bat 1-4 "The Last Arkham") the artist plays around with how Zsasz eyes look and sometimes they look very similar to that even though he is not supposed to be wearing anything. One image that sticks in my head is when Batman grabs Jeremiah Arkham by the neck in the last issue and says "Look into his eyes. That is madness." The Last Arkham are some of the earliest comics I had, so Zsasz is a villain that I strongly remember and that figure definitely captures how I think of him. I don't know if I'll pick him up though. With international shipping he's twice the price of a regular DC multiverse.

Looking like a cheap WWE action figure. I know theyre going for his classic look but they botched it so bad. He looks like he has tattoos instead of scars. The scars should have been sculpted, not painted. And the eyes are not sunglasses. His classic look was drawn in comics with his eyes cast in shadow to make him look more creepy and dehumanize him, but this just makes him look like an animaniacs cartoon. And they didn't even bother painting his back with scars which is supposed to have just as much, if not more, than his chest

I planned this month going differently but got inundated with preorders I need to catch up on, but I do have special plans for Superman which will become clear within the next few videos

Honestly, that's an insult to Mattel. Their DC Multiverse line wasn't great, but their DC Superheroes line back in the day was LEAGUES beyond this.

@@theotherguy21 The body they used for the main heroes was boxy and ugly, but a lot of the side characters were amazing. They still have the best figures available (besides imports) for a lot of characters, like Steel, Zatana, Clayface, Batman Beyond, comic Solomon Grundy, etc.
