Came into comments to say how great this dude is.. see a bunch of comments bashing him for being an SRV copycat.. wow. Unbelievable how fast other musicians are to put someone down. He clearly draws a lot of influence from SRV.. loves the Strat.. and loves that tone. This is by far the closest to SRV’s tone I’ve ever heard on KZbin. If he’s playing on something that’s not a Dumble or Two Rock.. I say fuckin rock on brother. Strat sounds impeccable and playing is great.

Not bashing this guy but he's a good player nothing special tho..he's got that "Srv ish" type thing going on but he's missing the biggest key! It's in the hands! Check out Tommy Katona he's the closet we get to Stevie in this lifetime! This guy uses heavy strings and all the other Mumbo jumbo that comes along with the perception of Stevie's tone! You can use 9 gauge and get the same tone! I can go a lot more in depth but yea he's good but not the best tone trust that

707king I totally agree!!! There are people who don't even play well at all, or professionally and dare to bash this guy. Well, "This dude" has done his personal, and professional homework, and understands "HIS" guitar, a Stratocaster, and knows exactly what sound he wants and desires out of it, therefore playing the way he plays. Let's face it, the guy is an awesome player. He feels it to the bone!!! And expresses himself with a strat. Also let us face another fact, there are people who are humbucking , Gibson LP lovers, and then there are the single coil, Stratocaster lovers. I respect both worlds, and detest folks who bash, put down Stratocasters, and people who play them just because THEY are not into that "Strat"world. It's a shame really. I knew some musicians in LA, Hollywood who just played The hunmbucking type guitars and when you pulled out a Stratocaster single coil, they would look at you like, "Your going to play that!! ", "it doesn't have enough balls to pull through" Well, I love the sound of a Gibson LP, but Fender Stratocasters do it for me, because I can play rock, pop, Jazz, and much more on my fender Stratocaster. And don't put anybody down for using a different set up!!!!! What is more important is the music you put out with that instrument. THAT'S where the balls come into play...

@@robertwhitcomb6105 What most folks mean by hard to play or having to fight a strat is because the fretboard radii are so tight as compared to other guitars. 7.25 and 9.5 inch radii and the horrible compound radius Fender used/uses are the typical with a more rare 10 inch and now aways, on a very few special models (Boxer strat), a 12 inch radius. Other brands typically start around 12 inch and go as flat as 16 inch, like Ibanez. The flatter the radius, the easier it is to play. Especially fast. I do love strats. They are all I own but, I do wish they would flatten the necks out quit a bit.

The “strat fights back” thing is something I’ve always said to people (who then look at me like I’m a moron). But it’s true. A strat makes you play. It doesn’t let any bullshit through. If I’m playing a gig where I NEED to be spot on, I’ll play my paul reed smith for most of the night. But if I’m playing a gig where I wanna be more considerate or more intentional, I’ll play a strat. I also do most of my practicing on a strat. If you can make it sound good on a strat, you can play it...that much is for sure.

DuckTalesWooHoo1987 what happened....?! 😬
@QuikdethDeviantart7 жыл бұрын
Sam Lee I would guess the neck torqued and bowed...generally that happens before any other part fails, and since everything is adjustable, a quarter turn or two in the right direction on the truss rod will fix it (unless you let it get too warped or it twists). You would also want to check out the spring situation in the rear cavity... with such heavy strings you may want an extra spring or two, or at least a bit of adjustment with a screwdriver to account for the extra tension. It's really more subtle than the commenter said, all strings exert a large amount of tension (more for heavier strings, but it's not crazy) and guitars are designed to take it. But it is certainly wise to do a fresh setup when changing string gauges, or you will find tuning issues plaguing you at the least and at the worst you may irreparably damage your nice guitar...

@Guitar Dudeo damn right stevie is a jimi rip off! That is another I thing I don't understand with today's players, they think the blues originated with stevie, when really all he did was play classic blues riffs invented by bb king, buddy guy, jimi hendrix etc. The most unique things about stevie is his fret and string size. Even 'his' signature beat up strat look he stole from rory gallagher!

What about the recent videos that say that thinner strings actually sound better because they give you a better EQ sound (like Billy Gibbons ad these guys are playing .007's and stuff like that). Me I just buy 0.010's in bulk, I'm tired of playing the game. I Iike 10's so I can just put them on any guitar and still tune any guitar any which way, and I not going to pull the strings out of tune. Plus I could't eve play a Floyd Rose at all without 10's.

Thanks, Dan and The Guitar Magazine. Awesome presentation. For that you get a subscription from me. Great advice on all levels. I've never seen the pickup selector wah-wah thing before. lol What you are saying about lowering the pickups makes total sense too. And like you, I'm enjoying the hot pickups less and less. I do like humbuckers on a Strat though. I only have one of my four Strats left with standard single coils on it. Been experimenting with lots of different pup combinations. Two humbuckers, P-90/single/Humbucker, Hot Rails. All fun, but nothing seems to beat that vintage "under wound" bell-like tone. Prefer analog pedals too. And way less "syrupy" processing. I want my guitar to sound like a guitar.

The thing that is so amazing to me about the Strat, is that Leo Fender really did nail it right out of the gate. It was basically perfect in every way. I mean look at a 2020 strat and a 1954 strat, they are essentially the same, atleast at their core. Its design is truly timeless. It looks as good and as modern today as it did 60 years ago. Even the Les Paul took a good 5 years or so before they really dialled in the design. Thats actually something that seems to be unique about guitars... The technology advanced instantaneously all at once... but since then has hardly changed at all. An Electric guitar today is essentially the same as an electric guitar 60+ years ago right down to the appearance. I wonder if Fender or Gibson had any idea that 70 years into the future people would still be lining up at music stores buying those exact same guitars.

Can't stand treble retention circuits. As above, his tone gets thin as he rolls down.On a normal strat circuit, the sound will warm up a bit as you have less gain, as you turn up, there's more gain and you want a bit more highs to keep clarity. Leo got it just right, imo.
@iggyward7 жыл бұрын
A treble retention circuit needs to be VERY carefully calibrated,- the resistor and the capacitor values, to get a setup that suits a player, I put together a little rig where I can test out different values to get it just right, makes a great improvement IMHO.

This is the ultimate, coolest name for a guitar channel, no argument even possible; had to subscribe. Regarding string gauge, see Rick Beato's great vid from early 2020. The notion that thicker strings yield thicker, fatter tone is just another guitara myth.
@Stereostupid4 жыл бұрын
Bigger strings hold a bit more bass low end so they are indeed a sound changer I don't know to what level to the common ear probably not going to hear much but you can definitely tell a tone difference between 8s and 13 on a strat at least a little come on that's ridiculous why does a bass sound like a guitar or do the strings matter?
@salzulli62904 жыл бұрын
@@Stereostupid If you're using lower tunings, a heavier guage string will have more tension to match the same pitch, which is why it's difficult to tune your guitar real low with 8s

zelon1983 I think it deals with string tension. One of the reasons Les Paul's were so popular is their ease of playability. The strings bend easier for a string tuned to pitch compared to the same gauge of string tuned to pitch on a fender. Since the scale length of the string is slightly longer on a fender, the string has to increase its tension in order to raise its pitch to the same of a Gibson's. Result is more string tension and tougher strings to bend but you can buy custom necks that have a shorter scale to them.
@taylordiclemente51637 жыл бұрын
It forces the rest of the band to tune down, unless you relearn the neck. just use thinner strings and tune standard.

Cool video, this guy definitely knows what he's talking about. My big difficulty with the Strat is the position of the volume knob, especially if I want to palm-mute higher strings... I've only got into Strats in recent years so I'm having to change my technique. But tone-wise, the Strat is unparalleled.

@bigredracingteam96424 жыл бұрын
I feel exactly the opposite. Maybe your frets were worn out? The jumbo frets feels like speed-bumps when doing slides, to me. Only problem with the vintage gauge is that they wear out quickly. The American Pro Strat has so called narrow-tall frets, which is a great compromise for me.
@letzrok10164 жыл бұрын
BigRedRacingteam - it’s crazy because I thought the same thing. I thought for sure that I would like vintage size frets but the meat of my finger kept dragging on the wood of the fretboard and I couldn’t get over it. How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb? The answer of course is 2. One to change the light bulb and the other to stand alongside watching to say hmmm, yeah but I could have done it better! For me Dan Patlansky is a great player with a great tone, for others he might not be. That's down to personal taste because people think about and feel music differently, quite why that seems to worry and frighten some people enough for them to troll you tube with lots of vitriolic negativity about other players to make themselves feel better is beyond me - go practice some more instead and post your videos, you'll probably feel better about yourself. Why have lots of people not heard of Dan Patlansky, probably because he hasn't written any songs that connect with a wider audience. Same as Philip Sayce, Aynsley Lister, Scott Henderson etc etc all of who (in my opinion) are awesome players but who's songwriting is interesting to some of the public like guitar players but not to a wider public audience. At the end of the day it's usually about 'the song'. In the 80's Stevie Ray Vaughan was tagged as a Hendrix clone, difference was SRV wrote original songs that connected and appealed to a much wider audience, and therefore posthumously SRV is considered by many to be King, which in my opinion he is!
@JS-rp7qb5 жыл бұрын
How many guitar players does it take? 1000. The first is SRV and the other 999 to copy him. Dead on about good, original songs. He’s a great player, but I listened to a few of his albums yesterday and couldn’t really get into any of them. Mayer was the king of figuring this out. No point being a great player if no one listens. Draw them in with good, catchy songs and they’ll stick around for the crazy guitar shit afterwards.
