@@LittleLulubee Hardly. The frequency range of orcas' sensitivity starts at 18 kHz and goes to 42 kHz. For reference, our ears' sensitivity caps out at about 5 kHz and the highest note on a piano is 4.2 kHz. Add in the air-water boundary which is very lossy, and the music sounds to an orca like giraffe sounds sound to us (basically nonexistent).

@@meerkat7363 I don't think the trainers are dumb nor are they mentally ill. My admittedly limited impression is that the trainers care deeply about the whales but have extremely divided consciences about what's best for them. On the one hand, the general public learns about orcas and their place in the natural world primarily though these shows. On the other, the trainers work for Sea World and the rest of those corporate theme parks, none of which seem to give a shit about the animals as long as they can make a buck off of them.

@Rossi Carmichael There's the Animal Welfare Act, the only Federal law that regulates animal exhibition. For that reason, I'd imagine you might have a better chance passing legislation in Florida where these animals live. There's a fairly strong environmental movement there which would help. On the other hand, God knows how much money Sea World has donated to State and local legislators. And Sea World is located in Orlando, which is bought and sold by Disney.

Pat MO Eveb if it has access to the ocean, that’s fine, they can choose to explore at their leisure. I keep seeing this, “born in captivity = will die/can’t hunt if released” and it’s not actually true (not from you, from others, though). Look at Keiko, or whatever it’s name was from Free Willy: it was acclimated back into the wild, learned how to hunt just fine, and in the end, it chose people over a whale pod, and decided to stay close to a bay in Norway, where it was very happy with the people around it. That is still freedom, and infinitely better than a cage. I agree, put the in a sanctuary or something at the absolute minimum! ✌🏼

@@sammyauscux9529 well actually there have been ZERO cases of orca aggression towards humans in the wild since the beginning of time. I have free dove with them in the wild and they are curious but only to come close to take a look at you. They understand intelligence and empathy and I think they recognize that in us and respect it. The only reason there have been attacks and fatalities in captivity, and always by the same handful of orcas is blatantly obvious. They are locked in prison cells forced to perform every day of their lives. They don’t get a day off EVER and see their trainers as their prison guards. And just like humans, some will just keep their heads down low and make it through, others will be driven to psychosis and act out violently. But I will absolutely get in the water again one day with them again in the wild. In fact I felt safer surrounded by 30 orcas than I do around 30 human strangers honestly!!!

Richard East When I was a child, there was a Sea World in Ohio and I went with my family every year. They litter their shows in what they say are “facts” and dress everything up really nice to convince people that while it sucks keeping them in captivity, the animals were happy and well taken care of. As an adult, I know now that these were lies to make profit. But they claimed their trainers were marine biologists, that if we wanted to be trainers (which at one point I wanted it more than anything in the world) all we had to do was go to school and we could “join the Shamu family”. Also keep in mind that Sea World’s peek in popularity was in the pre-internet age. There was no KZbin, no Google. All we had were books and what they told us. Until recent years, they were the only “experts on captive orcas”. It’s disgusting now, but imagine a time when it was all we knew.

Compare what Katana did here to what Tilikum did to Brandshaw and then you’ll understand how she’s being meticulously gentle and not trying to hurt him. Many years ago, I got to see orcas in a show. I thought that they were beautiful, majestic and I wanted to learn more about them. Back then, orcas in captivity was something new. We did not know much about them. SeaWorld and others in kind provided the opportunity to learn. We now know that orcas (and other creatures) should not be held captive. Most especially orcas should not be forcefully bred. Perhaps someday, humans might be able to interact with them in their natural habitat, possibly even communicating effectively. I now keep tabs on specific pods that live near the West Coast. Sadly, they are not doing as well as they should be. Humans need to be more mindful and considerate of the Earth's ecosystems so that it remains habitable for all creatures, not only ourselves.

They're part of the reason why there's such an understanding now of what's being done to Orcas at SeaWorld and other parks. They were the first whistleblowers who got into the job for the love of animals and realized how cruel it was ultimately. They deserve credit not blame. They are hardly the ones making decisions to keep orcas in captivity. It's the giant corporations like SeaWorld and those in business with SeaWorld who are to blame

The Marine Park displayed in this video is not SeaWorld, contrary to other comments posted. This is Marineland Cote D'azur in Antibes, France. It is the only aquarium in Europe that continues to hold orcas captive. Also, this video is over 5 years old. It is 2015 now. I first viewed this in 2010. This was a short while back before Blackfish was broadcast on CNN. My opinion: I find it disconcerting that very intelligent self-aware, emotional creatures have been removed from the wild and put on display against their will in the first place. No self-aware animal capable of developing an opinion on anything should be held in a small enclosure. Unfortunately, captive born or orcas are doomed to a lifetime of confinement. They have no idea what the ocean even is. For those who have been captured from the wild and never have reproduced, they should at least be put in a floating sea pen. This way, they could learn to find food by themselves. If they continue to be dependent on humans, then they should not have their personal agendas completely dedicated to human control. Captive mother orcas with calves should at least be allowed the space and free time to peacefully raise and bond with their young. This is impossible in a choreographed circus setting. The bottom line is, orcas are meant to function as individual, social creatures. They are not obligated to give us a thrill. This is what roller coasters are for.

Seaworld doesn't capture wild orcas anymore. They did when they first opened but have so for over 30 years. If y'all don't like Seaworld and other aquariums like them, then stop watching videos like this.

Marcos Rodriguez i disagree. everyone should educate themselves on this subject. captivity of these whales is wrong and dangerous and should be illegal. and hopefully one day it will be.

Orcas and dolphins emit high-frequency clicks that are reflected back when the sound waves strike an object. They use sonar information to navigate, hunt, and communicate. Keeping them in those pools is cruel. All their natural 'clicks' hit the sides of the pool constantly, something which wouldn't happen in the wild. It must be enough to drive them mad being made to perform tricks in small pool... day in.. day out. So very sad. :(

That was freya, a wild caught female from iceland. She was bred 5 times with 4 being stillborns and 1 being a live bon calf, named valentin. She later died in 2015 after battling a illness and ridiculously valentin passed away around 3 months later. After this incident i think marineland antibes stopped doing waterworks as they no longer do them today, but i mean idk.

I swam with dolphins in sea world many years ago . The Dolphins were like robots trainers using whistles for commands I would never go to sea world again or for that matter any Zoos . They belong in the ocean just as we belong on land

how can a normal thinking person want to turn these beautiful animals into a circus clown, and therefor not respect the life of these animals, only for the greed. For the damn money! It makes me sad to see this,we need to teach our children about what it is for the animal to do this every day,and not take them to a show for amusement.

I went to SeaWorld and watched these shows a few times when I was little, but now that I'm older I realize how cruel it is. Animals should only be in captivity if they are injured or something like that to the point where they wouldn't be able to survive in the wild and shouldn't be made to do tricks for entertainment.
