Look at Keiko, or whatever it’s name was from Free Willy: it was acclimated back into the wild, learned how to hunt just fine, and in the end, it chose people over a whale pod, and decided to stay close to a bay in Norway, where it was very happy with the people around it. They litter their shows in what they say are “facts” and dress everything up really nice to convince people that while it sucks keeping them in captivity, the animals were happy and well taken care of. As an adult, I know now that these were lies to make profit. But they claimed their trainers were marine biologists, that if we wanted to be trainers (which at one point I wanted it more than anything in the world) all we had to do was go to school and we could “join the Shamu family”. Also keep in mind that Sea World’s peek in popularity was in the pre-internet age. There was no KZbin, no Google. All we had were books and what they told us. Is she wanted to kill, she would not have bit his foot so gently. She would have dragged him all the way down to bottom of the pool and held him there. Ripped off limbs. And certainly wouldn’t have brought him back up stared at him so intently, and oh… there’s no swimming away if she doesn’t let you. Compare what Katana did here to what Tilikum did to Brandshaw and then you’ll understand how she’s being meticulously gentle and not trying to hurt him. Its a show of force, like as a reaction to something he did earlier she didn’t like, which often tends to be the Orca feeling she’s not being rewarded as much as she wants

Many years ago, I got to see orcas in a show. I thought that they were beautiful, majestic and I wanted to learn more about them. Back then, orcas in captivity was something new. We did not know much about them. SeaWorld and others in kind provided the opportunity to learn. We now know that orcas (and other creatures) should not be held captive. Most especially orcas should not be forcefully bred. Perhaps someday, humans might be able to interact with them in their natural habitat, possibly even communicating effectively. I now keep tabs on specific pods that live near the West Coast. Sadly, they are not doing as well as they should be. Humans need to be more mindful and considerate of the Earth's ecosystems so that it remains habitable for all creatures, not only ourselves.

The Marine Park displayed in this video is not SeaWorld, contrary to other comments posted. This is Marineland Cote D'azur in Antibes, France. It is the only aquarium in Europe that continues to hold orcas captive. Also, this video is over 5 years old. It is 2015 now. I first viewed this in 2010. This was a short while back before Blackfish was broadcast on CNN. My opinion: I find it disconcerting that very intelligent self-aware, emotional creatures have been removed from the wild and put on display against their will in the first place. No self-aware animal capable of developing an opinion on anything should be held in a small enclosure. Unfortunately, captive born or orcas are doomed to a lifetime of confinement. They have no idea what the ocean even is. For those who have been captured from the wild and never have reproduced, they should at least be put in a floating sea pen. This way, they could learn to find food by themselves. If they continue to be dependent on humans, then they should not have their personal agendas completely dedicated to human control. Captive mother orcas with calves should at least be allowed the space and free time to peacefully raise and bond with their young. This is impossible in a choreographed circus setting. The bottom line is, orcas are meant to function as individual, social creatures. They are not obligated to give us a thrill. This is what roller coasters are for.
