the song doesn't have anything to do with dying, like mom and dad were dying. It just means that mom and dad are old and after all the years of taking of their kids, it's now the time for the kids to take care of them old folks. Rest now, it's my turn to take care of you, sth like that

In the Philippines, when the children all grown and have job, most parents dont work anymore and the children take care of their father and mother financially. I think its our (filipino) tradition.

Mapa stands for Mama and Papa and at the same time stands for the word mapa or map in english.. so what we all learned from our parents have become our maps and guides as we ourselves navigate our way in this world and let our parents rest and us taking the responsibilities❤❤

You were right about MAPA referring to Ma (mother) and Pa (father), but it also directly translates to "map" since our parents serve as our guide and our life's compass as we grow up -- our Ma served as our "eyes when the world's changing" (helps us see things in different perspectives and builds our values, beliefs, etc.) while our Pa served as our "feet every time I'm already crawling" (when faced with difficulties and things get rough, he gives us a helping and helps us get up). Culturally, it is every Filipino child's dream to be able to take care of their parents when they get older. Thank you for appreciating SB19's MAPA and congratulations on your newborn baby!

Mapa would also mean map. The lyrics " dala ko ang mapa, kahit saan man magpunta, alam ko kung saan nagmula" meaning wherever success will bring us maybe it means working outside the country or simply a very good paying job or successful career, we know to go back home.

part of our culture as filipinos to return the favor of our parents, when we are able to stand on our own. when the children have a stable job, they provide financial support and take care of their parents when they get old. this is also our way to thank them for the love and sacrifice that they did for us😊 💙

Thats a powerful song, a tribute to all parents. What touched me is the part sang by Josh, its about a father though he didnt know his father. He delivered the part brilliantly. ❤❤❤❤❤
@gladysroca400711 ай бұрын
Pablo said he gave the part to Josh so it will have an impact. Ken also delivered his part well though he grew up away from his father who works abroad. The lines for Josh and Ken are very powerful its like an assurance to their father that they live all the words and advice given to them. I like the one that says "Dahil ikaw ang aking paa sa tuwing ako'y gagapang na" its like you hold on to your father's strength whenever you're down and losing in life. MAPA introduce me to SB19 during a graduation ceremony. And it's never turning back. I'm proud to be part of the boys journey. Mabuhay Pilipinas. Proud Pilipino!

I was born in the Philippines but have been here (US) for more than 30 years. I was discussing the meaning of "REST" in the Philippines and how my husband (who was born here in the US) understand it. Rest here is "dying/dead" as in "Rest In Peace" whereas in the Philippines, it means to "take a break". The song is really about our parents Ma(ma) and Pa(pa)- thus the title 'MaPa'. Most Filipinos call their parents-Mama and Papa as opposed to Mom/Mommy and Dad/Daddy here in the US. Mapa is also Tagalog/Spanish for "Map". It';s a wordplay that Pablo and SB 19 utilizes appropriately in all their songs. If you dig a bit deeper into the members and their songs you'll find out! Thank you for all your Rv's on SB19! This song makes me cry every time i listen to it.

it's not about parents dying. . . the "pahinga muna" which translates to "take a rest first" actually meant "take a break" as in take a break of doing the responsibilities/duties of being a parent (paying the bills, doing household chores, taking care of other children). so basically saying you can take a nap, i'll do the dishes and take care of my siblings for awhile or go on a vacation, i'll take care of the household for now.

New sub here. Stephen this is when the saying "lost in translation" applies. In Tagalog when someone says "GUSTO KITA" and if you literally translate that to English it would be "LIKE YOU" when the true essence is "I LIKE YOU" You are absolutely correct when word for word will not match all the time🤩 Taylor is correct in pronouncing 'ILAW". (I-LAW = EE - LAO pronounced like a chinese last name)😅🤩

You know in the Philippines, it's ingrave in our culture that children must take good care of their grown parents-not just interpreted as your responsibility or obligation, rather it is interpreted as your "payback" or your own initiative to take good care of them as they have perceived to be contributed to your existence, provide your needs (basic needs or even your education) when your young or they've been there to help you mold yourself as an individual in this world. Indeed, it's seems to be rude (they somehow called "irresponsible") to any Filipino children if they can't able to look back or somehow provides the needs of their parents because think about it, grown parents can't help themselves or do stuffs on their own.

Once we (Filipinos) are old enough to help at home, we try to ease our parents' burdens. Like when my sister and I were working already, we helped in the College education of our youngest. I took care of her daily expenses, my sister shared in her tuition fee. Our parents were still working too at that time. We don't wait for our parents to "need" us, meaning old age or dying. Honestly, I never really thought about it until you mentioned about the parents dying or being old. It made me think of the big difference in the western culture, and our own Filipino culture.

This is now the favored tribute song for Highschool and College graduations in the Philippines. Tagalog is a beautifully poetic language. An English version probably wouldn't work as well. It has been attempted but not yet successful. There are so many versions of this one song to listen to now that you understand the translation. A band version with Ben&Ben, another Filipino folk rock band. MY favorite, Sonik Philippines. Round Festival and the Forte Charity concert with a live orchestra and virtual Choir. Pablo wrote the song after they talked about how they missed their parents while doing laundry on the road. If you like the Wish Bus check out Liham. It's dedicated to A'tin, their fans.

They were mocked and insulted based on their appearance. But never returned back harsh words. They simply pay more attention to honing their craft and remaining silent with their bashers. SB19 is now soaring high globally, possibly not only because of their talents, but also to glorify God the Father Almighty. Guy asked: "Why isn't this in English?" Um, why should it be when a FILIPINO wrote it! And who was the song written for? Wow. If you want English lyrics -- it's really not that hard to check out a lyrics site that has a translation, or, with just a little effort, find the official lyric video for this song (which includes English subtitles) -- as many many people before you have. But to have the expectation that if a song is great, that it then needs to be in English... just, wow. It comes off as a back-handed compliment.
@Killermcknight11 ай бұрын
He didn’t mean “why isn’t this in English” as in this song from them. He meant this song was so good that we should have a fully English version because it’s so great.

@@Killermcknight Hi. That's what a "back-handed compliment" means. He may have had a good intention of praising it, but the way it was posed is also revealing. I've watched lots of videos of people reacting to this song. This is the first one where someone said that.

@@Killermcknight Pablo (the 2nd guy from the right, who is SB19's leader and wrote this song) is fully capable of writing a song in English, if he wants to. (He has written songs in English, like "I Want You".) SB19 have been quite clear in stating that one of their aims is to feature Filipino culture through their music and performances. "We should have a fully English version" seems to say that the language "Mapa" is written in is replaceable, that its poetry and lyricism could also be captured in English. Like "Pablo, your song's amazing! Now could you also make a version but in our language, pretty please!" I ask again: Why should it be in English? What's wrong with this one?
@Killermcknight11 ай бұрын
NOTHING is wrong with this one. He wasn’t even saying for them to do this in English. It was for a song like this to be made. Quit taking everything so literal and simmer down.

You were right to go with the Wish Bus for this song, because (as you said) live performances are great and honestly SB19’s specialty, AND they emphasized harmonies more here than the recorded version. I think the reason most folks recommend you go with the lyrics vid or MV first is really so that you enjoy their lyricism and so that you understand what they’re singing-but for this song you chose well to go with this than the lyrics video. I’m not sure what you think of retro and funk music, but I do recommend you check out WYAT too! :) That one’s all in English. They have performances in the Philippine AND USA Wish Buses, so pick whichever you like. OR go with the KZbin Fanfest performance; it does have very clear live audio AND they dance at the same time, which you haven’t seen yet! Though I know y’all always prefer live performances, I have to say that the MV is also really cool and very retro, enjoyable for folks our age 😂

It’s a play on words Ma-Pa, mama/mother-papa/father; mapa (Fil) - map (Eng); and in the song mata - eye(s), paa - foot/feet. Part of the song is about how the parents have taught the child how to view the world (mata or eyes), and how to stand up (paa or feet), and have basically given the roadmap (mapa) through life. Beautiful and poetic lyrics. Plus the chorus itself sounds like a lullaby, but now returned from child to parents.

The song begins when parents are about to retire like 50s above that the children should be the one responsible for them now and take good care of them the way how theyve been taking good care of when they wete a child. This is a Filipino family culture that youll never doubt happening in real life. Btw thanks for this and happy new year.
