I think the character development is more about him deciding to make friends on his own without Gon...before that he mainly became friends with people bc Gon befriended them or they were already Gon's friends like Kite and the magical beast family Gon met on the way to the hunter exam...

It has been years since i saw that arc so i don't remember it well but i kinda remember that it was Gon who spared them after they defeated them and Killua with Bisky just went along with him, i think, maybe i'm wrong.

i think Ikalgo is probably one of the most beloved characters in the fandom lol. i've never watched One Piece, but he's probably the 'Chopper' character archetype equivalent

In the end, the remaining ants even lived peacefully together with humans.

actually there was other way, he could have use Ko on his forehead to counter the attack, or Ken to counter all attack, but at this point he was probably too exhausted to make ko strong enaugh and he's just not strong enaugh for the ken option yet

Killua: casually snaps the necks off multiple Chimera, murdering them ruthlessly... "wow look how cool he is" Gon: says it's going to be easier to destroy a Chimera if he's lied to him... "OMG are you seeing this?!? wtf!"

Its because of the juxtaposition. Killua snaps necks all the time and hes been killing for years. Seeing him kill those guys is just another Tuesday. Lots of Gon moments (but especially that scene) feel much darker and creepier. The dead look in the eyes paired with the sudden flip flop of his personality make it seem more shocking to watch. What killua does is worse than gon - killing an ant that betrays you isnt evil or bad - but the way gon says it and the juxtaposition to his usual temperment is what stands out everytime

With the amount he’s seen on top of him getting his arm blown off in greed island on purpose and his father abandoning him when he was younger ( I know it was to protect gon) but still that doesn’t change the fact he never come and saw Gon

i don't think they REDUCE him, it's just throughout the series, his most on-show trait from around episode 3 or 4 was been his dangerous and delusional nature. though i'm all for the discussion of more aspects of his character, so that works with me either way.
