i think you got it wrong this time. in my opinion it its the fact that the series was always "call of duty with future-nazi-ww3 atmosphere. but killzone 4 was a cold-war spy game. this led to not having your combat buddies, not having hugh battles, not fighting against an intire planet and because the story didn't take place on helghan it wasn't a grimm and toxic environment and atmosphere. this led to the game not feeling like killzone at all. the gunplay was never that important, they didnt need to do something new (although the series had car, mechwarior and jetpack sections). and i actually remember the gunplay as awsome because you felt the bodyweight of the soldier, the coversystem was great(character even pulled back the gun when you walk up to a wall), the enemies reacted to beeing shot (while f.e. the elites in halo don't), you had to conctroll your hands and work with the move controller when sniping (making it nore than just aim,click,win). killzone 4 just had none of those things. the only resemblance to the series are the helghasts.

Gameplay wise Killzone 2 campaign may not have bn all that unique, but in the multiplayer space there def was nothing like it. Being able to create spawn points with the tactician, and shotgunning people and setting up sentry drones as an engineer while a teammate who’s an assault was setting up explosives in the enemy base are examples of things still not found much in the gaming landscape
@AguyR14012 жыл бұрын
It was an old school multiplayer shooter, with unique classes fighting across innovative (and often impressively large) map designs. But you'd be remiss not to mention the Sta3 LMG, which actually belonged to no class, as you could only spawn with it if you spawned as the default soldier, who didn't have access to any perks... But it didn't matter! That thing was a buzzsaw and made quick work of anything at close and medium ranges (so long as the recoil was properly managed). The Singleplayer was still a blast. In fact, it has plenty of replayability. The cover (and-shoot) system worked well and I found only the story to be somewhat lacking. I still fire up the singleplayer to this day, as kz2 offers something unique that other games/shooters, either from then or now, don't have.

@@rgb1996 Yes you could disguise yourself as the enemy while playing the saboteur class in both games. Kz3's cloak mechanic was much more convincing, however. It's probably because people remember the "Gears of Duty era" when everything was "cinematic" to the point players wondered why they didn't just go watch a movie then periodically stopping to play Call of Duty between every scene because that's what almost all games were. EVERYTHING was trying to get Call of Duty/Gears of War money for FAR TOO FUCKING LONG, games became even more linear then the previous generations of linear games, it couldn't merely be a linear game, no it had to be THIS EXACT TYPE of linear game. Linear action games with regenerating health were the equivalent of the "UbiSandbox" back then. That's not to say exceptions didn't exist but all the big gaming companies except Nintendo were touting that this is what people wanted and single player games were dead no matter how much their audience said otherwise, even with franchises that got their start in an entirely different fucking genre, even F.E.A.R. 2 seemed like it wanted to embrace the Call of Duty route but wasn't popular enough with test audiences as it gave you health kits every nanosecond and occasionally you would get into a ripoff of the EOD-209 which literally had health regeneration and F.E.A.R. was ALREADY an FPS. It's sequel, F.3.A.R. (yes really, they did that stupid thing where they use l33t speak for a fucking title) went further down the Call of Duty hole (complete with regenerating health and a budget ripoff of the chase sequence in Modern Warfare 2) and was even more shit. Yeah KILLZONE benefitted from it (along with having a stable framerate), but most games were ruined by it, for example Resident Evil's appeal was in horror and it was increasingly having little to no appeal outside of brand recognition (I highly recommend playing Resident Evil 6, as unlike RE5 it was actually pretty fun and had the right amount of bad to be so bad it's good (the constant quick time events is extremely annoying however), RE5's only value is if you care about seeing all the storyline with Wesker get wrapped up).

@@DarthMcDoomington Yeah I distinctly remember "Call of Duty" being 1)amazing in 2003, 2)Yet the campaign lost me in the middle of the British missions. So how great was that campaign, really? I think it had a shelf life of imaginative visceral 'roleplaying,' paradoxically (as RPG is the genre you'd contrast the experience with.) The killing and killing and killing made this cinematic experience feel fake, whereas killing and killing and killing is just fine in an RPG, or indeed, multiplayer Call of Duty. Their research probably showed people barely got 5 hours in, which is why Modern Warfare is...five hours.

7:18 Fun Fact: The AA Gun being used in this scene is during a wave/horde-type segment, where you fend off multiple onslaughts of infantry soldiers, and is notoriously difficult (especially on the hardest difficulty), but can be avoided altogether by simply running to the end of the far building being looked at and entering the sliding door to the next part of the mission. This is most easily done at the very start of the segment, when you're commanded to take control of the AA gun, because the enemies do not spawn for a few moments after being given the objective. Simply start running immediately so as to avoid the enemies from spawning in too high in numbers prior to your speeding past them. Use grenades to kill the first couple that spawn in as you near the other side of the area.

Important note: Guerilla never claimed Killzone 1 to be a "Halo Killer", that was coined by media outlets hyping up the game and/or Sony executives. Killzone 2 and 3 were for their time breathtaking. While Guerilla did similar things to Call of Duty...COD does not move like Killzone. In Killzone you have weight to your character and the world felt lived in. The smoke effects, particles effects, player movement, physics, character models were all top notch. I will always be an Xbox 360 fan over the PS3 (had/have them both) but Killzone 2+3 were truly special. They even look fantastic today when run on a 4K UHD. Killzone Shadow Fall failed not because it was the same with better graphics...it failed to carry the name because it was a huge departure from what Killzone was. Gone were the giant battles and a sense that a huge war is taking place around you. They made you a lone wolf, put you in small, semi-open environment with endlessly spawning enemies, and cookie cutter objectives. They took away the flexibility the second and third games gave you when you fought. There is one best way to beat a level. They expected you to run around in stealth like a damn Splinter Cell game and it was far to rigid for its own good.

Most importantly is that the parts added up to something really over the top and fun. When I got a PS4 I got Shadowfall for my dad and I to play together. Killzone 2 was the Medal of Honor of the sci-fi genre. The sound effects....The mission on the bridge was intense. I usually turn rumble features off, but in that game it actually added to the game. Ears and hands were left fizzing once it was all said and done. @ "series Overview" - bang on point. Nice looking, but already played it. The only people not pulling their weight in the industry are gameplay developers. The irony. It wasnt original, but the template of what we expected the FPS genre and gaming as a whole to one day become but never did - an evolution of what we got on the PS2/Xbox/PC. Crysis 1 and Fear were the last time I saw video games evolve, though shout out to the From Software games (including the Core).

Killzone Shadowfall is a fitting ending for a series which has been started not by ambition to deliver a great game, but by philosophy of "we can do it too". The first game is absolutely mediocre - there are better, more fun fps games even of PS2, which is not know to be a powerhouse in that aspect anyway. Shadowfall is a similar case - it is a game made because Sony needed their big FPS tech showcase for their new console. There is no unique vision, it is by the numbers shooter which cannot decide what it wants to be. It feels like it was made because Guerilla had to do it, not because they wanted to do it. Compare it to Killzone 2, which is obviously something which can be called a labour of love. It is obvious that they wanted to create something unique with this game and it shows in both its single player and multiplayer campaigns. No game I've ever played made such convincing feeling of being a soldier at the tip of the spearhead digging in to a enemy's territory. It was gritty, brutal and made you feel like your side does have to fight for every street corner, every meter of land ahead, suffering heavy losses in the process, with both sides taking part in senseless, violent meat grinder of a fight to rule over ashes. Game had its low points (that final battle is the laziest boss stage I've ever played, topping Icon of Sin in Doom 2, which is no small feat), but overall it is a classic worth getting PS3 for. Killzone 3 was not as impressive for me, from visual perspective I prefer the looks of the second game and it felt like they wanted to take player to as many different places as possible just for the sake of variety, without thinking about whether this makes any sense from story's perspective. Another highlight of the series for me is Killzone Mercenary on Vita, which is often mistaken for PSP's Liberation for some reason. The game has been released few months prior to Killzone Shadowfall and is orders of magnitude better, even though it runs a relatively low power, handheld device. It was developed by Guerilla Cambridge, a totally different team which made MediEvil games and it is easy to see how different their approach to designing the game was. First of all, story was not as black and white any more and there was more nuance to Helghast, who were just space nazis up to this point. With it being a handheld game, it was made with re-playability in mind and thus, each level can be played with different additional objectives. But the real highlight is how flexible they made the gameplay - you could try many different approaches. In most levels stealth was as valid option as going in guns blazing and there was no instafail bs - if you were uncovered, you just had to deal with more enemies and take them head-on. The variety of weapons is also a strong point, with each gun being loads of fun to use. It even does have a shogun firing incendiary rounds. There are different armor types allowing you to choose one better suited for your play style. Finally, there are VAN-guard tools, ranging from a drone which gives you a temporary wallhack, to what can be described as a high-tech riot shield, a shoulder mounted, mini missile launcher and active camouflage among others. There are so many loadout options to choose from. Want to vaporise enemies from orbit, shoot them with insanely powerfu anti-materiel sniper rifle and shred them to pieces with shotgun firing armour piercing rounds in automatic fire mode, with a side dish of smoking them with a toxic gas grenade, all while you are clad in heavy armor? Be my guest! Want to sneak around, kill enemies with stealth melee kills, clean up with silenced SMG, shoot them with toxic darts to have a possibility of interrogation before stabbing them with a knife in to the head, use active camouflage to hide yourself from view and super light sniper infiltrator armour which makes you almost completely silent? You can. Want to create mayhem with explosives, spamming grenades from launcher? Setting up traps with proxy mines? Flying a small murder drone which stabs people's brains? Moving enemies down with a heavy machine gun? Do it. It is simply amazing how a team that has never worked on a Killzone game, or even FPS game for that matter, targeting a handheld platform, has managed to create a game which runs in circles around high-profile release of a big-budget PS4 exclusive. It is a shooter done right and deserves to get a remaster for home consoles.

Its funny that Killzone 2 is one of my favorite games all time , I just bought a PS3 again two months back to revisit this game (PS NOW has not yet released in my country) . Killzone series struck with me than any other FPS shooter ; The simulation feel to the weapons , visceral sound design , Ragdoll models on par with Rockstar games Euphoria Physics , attention to details . Not many people mention that how fantastic the gritty artstyle is and even the voice acting is in this game especially blood thirsty roars of the Helghast talking about bravado and hate against the ISA . Yes the Killzone series is not for everyone but it did everything successfully what BF 2042 and even the Futuristic COD games (Advanced Warfare , Infinite warfare) failed to do .

Kinda curious what you'd think of Killzone: Mercenary. I honestly thought it was an extremely good game, not just for the console it was on but also for being one of the few FPS games at the time that genuinely had rather open-ended level design. It's funny cuz I expected Shadow Fall to basically be Mercenary but next-gen, but apparently it was a downgrade where it counted.

One problem I notice in Sony's Multiplayer games is like they assume you buy the game right of the launch date. Then if you try to play the multiplayer game for the first time after 5 years at a low level, there is a probably that you will gave up. I think Sony needs to look at games like Call of Duty to see how they treat a new players (in online mode) and see why they stay!
@abdelali92792 жыл бұрын
That is the problem with Guerilla, they're technically competent, but my word they are too bland, instead of having Gordon Ramsay yelling "It's fucking raw", he will just leave a mild, it's so bland. I mean and just look how poor their timing is, Zero Dawn released on 2017, who won GOTY BoTW, and it think the impact was so much that now Aloy has a paraglider too, but what does released with Forbidden West, Elden Ring, maybe we will have souls like combat in Horizon 3 at this point, I love the game but I know it is just "too safe" like a moder superhero movie, it's just a checklist of what makes a game "gud" but lacks hearts.

I loved Killzone 2, but Shadow Fall had no staying power. It looked good, and wasn’t all industrial landscape, which was an improvement. But the campaign started with a ridiculous premise, and dwelt too long in environments that were simply not as well-designed as those in seventh-generation Halo titles, for instance. It also relied on a transforming rifle, an idea which has always sucked and which reduced weapon variety. And after a generation of games with fairly good multiplayer progression, Shadow Fall MP brought too little to the table in that regard. Actually, this was a common theme with PS4/Xbox One shooters, where the publishers appeared overly fearful of complaints about useful gear being locked behind a classical leveling system. Even my favorite game in the genre (to this day), Titanfall 2, front-loaded the unlocks and left mainly some cosmetics as rewards.

It's really funny, the first Killzone had the widest weapon variety with most weapons having a secondary fire, with the campaign having four radically different characters to choose from who massively alter your gameplay with their abilities and staring weapons, marred by being a sci-fi medal of honor ripoff that ran like ass. It even had the three weapon limit, though they could be any weapon you wanted instead of a pistol, a primary, and a heavy. The ISA even had a distinctive look and aesthetic rather than just being US Marines in Space, hell their light machine gun was a minigun that had an undermounted rocket launcher. Then Killzone 2 came out and threw away most of the ISA's aesthetics in favor of looking tacticool to emphasize their status as a call of duty ripoff. Killzone 3 at least brought some life back to the series by bringing back the three weapon limit and giving us some wacky weapons for the heavy slot, like the jetpack. So why the hell did Killzone Shadowfall throw all of that good shit away? I'm in a universe where a military force issued a .50 caliber semi-automatic, followed by a goddamn .357 magnum, why the fuck am I use an actual real world Walther P99? Why do these cool sci fi guns in the future of a world that issues some of the most insane weapons ever developed look and feel like cheap airsoft guns?

I actually liked this game tbh. It's not amazing by any means, and there's definitely better FPS games out there. But when I got my PS4 home for the first time and loaded this in, the graphics blew me away and to be honest (especially at the time) there really weren't that many other great FPS titles out there. It's easy to look back now and see all the shortcomings when compared to modern games and how they have evolved, but I really think the reason for this game was to showoff the PS4's capability and provide a decent gameplay loop, which I think this game nailed.

I think they could a jump back and explore a Helghast civil war/insurrection. Visari mentions dealing with their enemies at home and it seemed to include both civilians and internal purging. It can explore the Helghast more while stilling not making everything black/white. Perhaps the insurrectionists aren't politically aligned enough for the ISA to help and over the course of the game your faction splinters slowly leading to the demise of your party. Killzone has a lot more they can show to the Helghast govt and their people that could be explored. Additionally, it could show old Helghan but with more modern technology balancing drab dusty and grey/brown with some of the more vibrant sleek components we saw in new helghan. It's not unrealistic that places like the capital would be more polished than the slums and places where a class divide is exacerbated.

I actually really enjoyed Shadow Fall. I remember getting it with my day one launch PS4 and playing through the campaign in one go and then playing a stupid amount of the multiplayer the day after. The story was weak sauce, I personally think Echo should have been the protagonist so we could see first hand the consequences of Killzone 3’s ending. But the setting of a Cold War between the Vektans and the Helghast was fascinating despite narrative shortcomings and a logical next step for the overall arc of Killzone, considering the first three games were essentially a science fiction reimagining of the Second World War. But looking back it’s clear that this was a publisher mandated game designed to be a system seller at launch and it does feel very rushed out the door to release alongside the PS4. Guerilla didn’t want to fall into the trap of being Sony’s equivalent to Bungie or 343 Industries and at least they got to do their own thing and made the incredible Horizon franchise. Not a classic like Killzone 2 but not a dud either. Solid game that had the potential to do more.
