Kilomètre Lancé 2022: De Tomaso P72, Delahaye 107 Racer, Porsche 959, Blitzen-Benz, Nomad Mk1

Last Saturday I went to Engadin Airport, in Switzerland near St. Moritz, to attend the Kilomètre Lancé 2022, a revival event of the original competition held in 1929 and 1930 as the starting event of the International St. Moritz Automobile Week. This week consisted of a rally, the kilometer race, a skill race, a concours d'elegance and the Bernina hillclimb race. For the second one, the dead-straight section of road between Samedan and Punt Muragl was the first asphalted road in Engadine and the venue for this spectacular race, in which the only thing that mattered was the maximum speed that could be achieved.
Of course nowdays these kind of sprint competitions are no longer held on public roads. The kilometer race, called by the organizers "Kilomètre Lancé", has been exhumed since last year as part of the modern International St. Moritz Automobile Week and it's held on the runway of Engadin Airport, specially closed for this purpose. However Engadin Airport isn't only within sight of the historic venue, it also has a suitable track with its 1.8 km runway.
Unfortunately the weather hasn't been the best this year, but this didn't take away the participants' desire to have fun! There were some pretty interesting vehicles such as the Streamliner C-16, a modern tribute to the 1939 Mercedes W154 Streamliner Rekordwagen, a 1924 Delahaye 107 Racer (3:50), the mighty 21.5-litre Blitzen-Benz (5:03), the interesting Nomad Mk1 (11:24), the 1952 Jaguar XK 120 Jabbeke Record Car (4:25) and many more. Great to also see one of the development prototypes of the new De Tomaso P72.

Blooming marvellous! Maybe I’m a sad old BMW Fanboy but the ‘Batmobile’ looked exquisite and sounded superb too. Every car on display was worthy of this video. Maybe the later runs would have been better served by Vintage World Water Record Boats?

Great video, great sounds (in other words a typical excellent quality 19Bozzy92 video) The diversity of these cars and bikes was outstanding. It appeared that many of the drivers getting the wettest in the open cars had the biggest grins on their faces at just being able to show people their cool old cars and to go fast... Michelle Duff once told me how she still had ringing in her ears from when in the 1960s, as Mike Duff, she was a factory rider for Yamaha and was chasing Jim Redman on the Honda six cylinder 250 and Luigi Taveri on the five cylinder 125.

Yeah the style is pretty similar to the T80, although the actual inspiration of that C-16 comes from the 1938 Mercedes-Benz W154 Record Car. From their website the engine was created by combining two Buick 4.1L straight-8s. You can find more info here: www.streamlinerc16.com/
