For a woman with a crippling anxiety disorder this has to be one of the most bittersweet moments ever. She handled it with grace, poise and honesty. I have great respect for Kim Basinger for how she handled her career and personal life in Hollywood and then chose to leave it on her own terms.

I am still so happy for her. Kim Basinger richly deserved her Oscar. She turned-in a tour de force performance in an incredible film. I love a good underdog story, but she honestly deserved her Oscar. Plus, the Academy was smart. They knew that this was most likely Kim's one chance at Oscar glory, whereas with Julianne Moore, you KNEW she was going to win hers eventually. I still say she's going to win another one, but this category on this night belonged to Kim Basinger. 👍🏻

and she's still Oscar-less. Personally, I didn't think Kim's role was an academy award winning role. Her acting was fine, but I was shocked that she won. Gorgeous woman. Kim was fantastic in L.A. Confidential. I had only one little issue with this category that year, they did not nominate Sigourney Weaver for her impressive acting in The Ice Storm
@lordfarquaad82677 жыл бұрын
Tell it!
@loveanimals69817 жыл бұрын
She should definitely have been nominated for The Ice Storm...or Joan Allen, for that matter, for the same movie. Sigourney has unfairly been overlooked various times by the Academy when she should've been recognized (the aforementioned The Ice Storm, Map of the World, Copycat...where I thought she gave a superb performance playing an agoraphobic).
@AlexBlend7 жыл бұрын
haha I agree with every single word. Sigi was phenomenal in Copycat, The Ice Storm, A Map of the World. I'd also add her brilliant acting in Imaginary Heroes (2004) and Snow Cake (2006)
@loveanimals69817 жыл бұрын
I've never seen (though I'm familiar with) Imaginary Heroes nor Snow Cake. I haven't kept up with watching movies over the past several years the way that I did at one time (when often I would watch a movie a day). Weaver has definitely been fortunate to have been in some real gems throughout her career, and had some good roles (but she's had the talent and poise to merit them).

Kim revealed on Red Table Talk recently that she also has agoraphobia, and that it took a toll on those around her, including Alec. It seems that that was one of the biggest reasons they got divorced because she said Alec wasn’t mentally available for that kind of talk, he tried to be there for her as best as he could. But it just didn’t work. Her agoraphobia could be a reason why Kim used parental alienation against Alec, maybe she wanted Ireland to be near her at all times because she needed someone.

I have been a massive Kim Basinger fan since I was 11, but I never thought i'd see the day she won an Oscar. I thought they would give the Oscar to Gloria Stuart for Titanic, so I was pleased to see Kim finally win some recognition for her acting. I have only seen four of the five nominee's performances (I have not seen In & Out). I don't really remember Minnie Driver that much from Good Will Hunting, Julianne Moore was good in Boogie Nights but not Oscar worthy, Gloria Stuart was by far the oldest of the nominee's and I thought she would be given the award. When I first saw the film I did not really think Kim's performance was Oscar win worthy but after repeat viewings I have come to appreciate her performance more. Also considering the other performances nominated in this category, and the overall quality of the film compared to the others I think it was a fair win in the end. I just wish she had been in more high quality films in her career as alot of the films she has appeared in have either performed badly at the box office or have been poorly received by the critics, sometimes both.
