Bacall's role had Oscar written all over it. The Academy has been recognising those kinds of performances for years. Look at the history books; loud-mouted, cocksure, often histrionic characters get a nomination or even the award sometimes. From Shelley Winters to Estelle Parsons and Marisa Tomei to Mira Sorvino, these kinds of roles always attract attention. I was glad Juliette won, it was a quiet but sweet performance. My dear Juliette, Bacall didn't deserve to win. In fact, she was the weakest of the nominees and thank god she didn't win because she was 'overdue'. Juliette Binoche - sheer class and down to earth humility. European actors are much more aware that their ancestors were travelling gypsies and poor players. Look at the audacity of Lauren Bacall and her family so smugly assured they would win the prize, and then the eye rolling and self entitlement when the french actress wins instead. Hollywood people think they have the right to be treated like royalty - this was a fabulous wake up call that the old guard are not assured glory.
