This is a thrilling document of what indeed seems to be lost. Todays Sanjo-players say, the Master-Sanjos, which they play by heart are of better quality. I can't decide (I feel it is much more lively and has a happy feeling), but an improvised piece communicates spontaneity, which is a completely different experience for everybody. I can't believe, the ability of improvising sanjo cannot be recovered on the basis on the existing music. Please, dear Sanjo-players, think of that and work on that!

I'm a new student of the sanjo tradition, and I will start to learn the sanjo of my teacher's teacher's teacher, Kim Jukpa, very soon. I've wondered the same question that you have proposed, and I'll have to dig into it more. I doubt that any improvised sanjo of mine could even begin to approach the quality of the sanjo of the great masters, but I suppose that's why people bother to memorize the great improvisers' sanjo in the first place. I don't think that'll keep me from testing out my improvisation muscles someday, though ;)
