I recently got 2 mates of mine who've never seen breaking bad and BCS to watch the entirety of Better Call Saul from S1 to 5, as I was curious to see if it could still grab their attention being a slower paced show without knowing the payoff that is breaking bad. It turns out that the entire show pretty much stands on its own, they loved it from the first episode onwards. It took some time to really get hooked, but the Tuco scenes kept them watching even if they didn't know who he was. The only thing that ever became an obvious issue was the warehouse basement extensions Gus hired Werner Zeigler for. One of my mates kept asking what they were even doing but I told him I wouldn't tell. Didn't impact his reaction to the season 4 finale though. Now that we've finished the show, one of them wants to wait for S6 whilst the guy asking about the warehouse is now watching through Breaking Bad with me. This little experiment of mine seems to prove how good Saul serves as a standalone show, as well as a prequel.

I experienced the same. I am aware of the brilliance of BB, but still can't get through the 3rd episode for some reason. I watched BCS and got hooked instantly. It's the amazing writing, Jimmy's interesting character and the Jimmy-Chuck dynamic that did it for me.
@Kaiwala3 жыл бұрын
@@shadowwarrior2030 In BB the show definitely gets more interesting when Mike, Gus and Saul enter the picture. And that's near the end of season 2. Tuco at the end of s1 does keep you hooked but if you aren't interested in Jesse and Walter it's gonna be hard getting there.

I saw parallels between this episode and the one shortly after Jimmy turns down the Davis & Main gig, when Kim is all business and trying to talk him to his senses but Jimmy, with a newfound sense of clarity, beckons her to get into the hotel pool and relax with him. Shortly thereafter, they pull off a con that breaks a big moral boundary for Kim. In this episode it is a freshly-freed-from-corporate-shackles Kim who is encouraging a nervous Jimmy to enjoy the amenities of the tropical hotel and get room service. Then she pitches a con to him that seems to break down one of his moral boundaries. How appropriate is it that Jimmy marries Kim with the ring of his former con buddy on his finger? He married her with Marco's ring, and she has slowly come to occupy the role of his new con artist partner. Love your breakdowns as always. You catch so much subtext in the imagery and shot composition that blows my mind every time.
@JbodMC4 жыл бұрын
This is a really great read and I think it points towards Kim and Jimmy being a Bonnie and Clyde of sorts next season now that Kim has fully come to terms with who she is. I think the aspect of this video alluding toward Kim having disdain for Jimmy over the course of the night is completely misleading. If we compare the way Kim reacts to Jimmy and Howard asking her whether shes thinking clearly, they are completely night and day scenarios. I think after Jimmy implies that he's going to cut things off if they leave the hotel room, from that point forward she's actively trying to coerce him back to being himself after all the trauma he suffered. Its possible conflict will arise between them in the end game of season 6, but most of the season from my perspective needs to be about Kim unlocking Jimmy's worst impulses in order to complete his transformation.
@numehall31864 жыл бұрын
@@JbodMC I agree. I thought it was clear in the scene where Jimmy says he wants to go home (which I was surprised wasn't really mentioned at all in this breakdown) that Kim could sense he was thinking of leaving her "for her own good" which is why she tried to force him to stay and started talking about conning Howard to try to "reignite his fire" so to speak.

I feel so proud to say that I also noticed what you noticed-the mint chip ice cream rejection and how green always means “go” but that is not where Jimmy is this time! Further to that, anytime I see Jimmy in WHITE, it indicates to me a clean slate a blank perspective. While at the hotel, the pair were covered in white sheets, and when “slippin Kimmie” runs the gamut of “or” scenarios, she’s covered in white. I also noticed the panning back after Kim turns around and does the “finger guns”, Jimmy is in white as the camera pans back. Did you notice that when the camera pans back at Jimmy sitting in white in amazement Jimmy sits directly between GREEN AND BLUE light behind him representing law and lawlessness.
@Pistachios424 жыл бұрын
I love your interpretation of Kim's pro-bono cases being like currency to pay for her wickedness with more saintly acts. I think the show always presents how she puts up with Mesa Verde's ruthless expansion as a way to financially pay for pro bono work. But now I think by choosing another source of income for this, potentially scamming Howard, the pro bono work is the morality chips that she's now cashing in.

So, basically Kim is like that Chappelle Show sketch "When keeping it real goes wrong" or the Lonely Island video "Threw it to the Ground". Kim thinks she's keeping it real, but really she's just making bad decisions and justifying it by saying she won't let people tell her what to do.

Another huge moment is when Kim chews out Kevin. She doesn’t object when he chastises her for failing. It’s when he says «she could do a lot better than Jimmy». This is why she snaps, he’s trying to tell her what her story is. It also explains why Kim loves Jimmy: everybody (Jimmy inc) tries to take her agency by telling her to stay away from him. @@ologicalonline Really appreciated the callback to that earlier scene with Chuck. That is one of the most important scenes of the show IMO. Bob's acting was so subtle and expressive. The moment after you cut where Jimmy says 'She's not ruined...' was really interesting. I think Kim immediately shuts him down because she senses Jimmy was about to get himself lawyered into admitting something: 'she's not ruined, she had nothing to do with it' or something similar. It's easy to forget all the characters are *lawyers* (apart from the ones who are cartel, which is another type of cunning).

I should append, also, in context of the legitimacy of both Chuck’s rage and Howard’s shock, that neither man “projects” virtue upon Kim, except from his own posture of virtue, given no evidence to the contrary (with regards to Kim's virtue) and overwhelmed with evidence that Jimmy could be responsible (which is not at all farfetched, since Jimmy is Kim’s most obvious and direct contact with the criminal underworld, and all of her own hypocrisy is, as you have admitted, an attempt to sublimate her guilt about this criminal double-life). What is truly “unforgivable” is the suggestion that two men who have been such living embodiments of their social roles would be accused of harbouring ulterior motives in dealing with two con artists, one seasoned and the other up-and-coming, especially with the intent of protecting the student from going the way of the master. They literally want nothing but to bring Jimmy to Justice. _I mean: who do they think they ARE? Officers of LAW??_ [({M.M.)}]

The Jimmy-Kim dynamic sounds partially similar to the Walt-Jesse dynamic now that I've heard your analysis. Much like how Jimmy uses Kim staying by his side as validation that he has not yet crossed some irredeemable moral line, Walt continually commits more immoral actions until he completely and irrevocably alienates Jesse. It's also interesting that Kim and Jesse have a related story arc: rising from being a novice in a skill (meth making and unethical legal practice, respectively) to matching the capabilities of their teacher, a years-long expert in a related field (chemistry and conning, respectively). What would be really poetic is if the two stories concluded similarly as well. Kim suffers proportionally way more severe consequences than Jimmy for the unraveling of their "let's destroy Howard's career" scheme (presumably disbarment and arrest); I can see Howard not going down without a fight, copying Chuck's tactics by baiting an unwitting recorded confession out of them. Maybe the stress of the cartel plotlines result in a careless misstep in the Howard scheme?Jimmy suffers no consequences in the scheme because only Kim is directly implicated and she refuses to testify against her husband. Jimmy in the Gene timeline sees something on TV relating to either HHM or the Sandpiper case, compelling him to return to Albuquerque as Saul Goodman one last time. This leads both to the dissolution of HHM and the clearing of Kim's name at the sacrifice of Jimmy in the process (an effective life sentence for his involvement in the "Breaking Bad" events). It'd also be cool if he visits Chuck's burial site along the way and acknowledges that Chuck hadn't completely misjudged him (his "I did it for me" moment): Slippin' Jimmy with a law degree was about as dangerous as a chimp with a machine gun with respect to the ones he cared for.
@nont184113 жыл бұрын
I think Kim is more like Walt while Jimmy is more like Jesse in this dynamic. At the start, people think that Jimmy/Jesse will be a bad influence on Kim/Walt. Jimmy/Jesse stay in the game longer than Kim/Walt but latter are more natural and more efficient about it once entered the game. Kim/Walt were regarded by the society as good guys. The DEA loved Walt and saw Walt as a lovely brother in law of Hank while the law firms saw Kim as the angel who is a direct opposite to a scumbag like Jimmy. Most of the cons they did together came from Kim/Walt idea while Jimmy/Jesse were the ones carrying it out and suffered huge consequences from it. Kim/Walt knew how to compose or act in a high society better than Jimmy/Jesse who are too emotional and didn’t fit in. And to prove Kim and Walt similarities, I would like to pick some of their quotes for you. Kim: “I like it. I’m good at it.” Walt: “I liked it. I was good at it. And I was really…I was alive.” Kim: “You don’t save me. I save me.” Walt: “I’m not in danger, Skyler. I am the danger! A guy opens his door and gets shot and you’d think that of me? No. I AM THE ONE WHO KNOCKS.”
