I was confused when i found out it was already kept in a museum but somehow someone can still wear it? Like all museums has sort of the same guidelines right? Everything in it are meant to be preserve and display only. What sane person would go to a museum and see a pretty looking historical dress/uniform and said "i want to wear that"? I get it if it's a couture dress like how most celebs do it, they wear an iconic existing dress. But it's not a super old dress and is usually meant to be able to be adjusted to different models of similar size. I sew and already took a fashion design class and about to continue it and it makes me fume how people said there are professionals that can fix the dress! Like why do they need to fix it if it's not broken before being worn? Those professionals work to fix and preserve historical pieces that's found broken or started to degrade overtime, making them fix one that's ruined after being worn is unnecessary problem. And i feel the gems can still be salvageable though there will be small marks on the fabrics of when the gems basically got ripped off it, but those tear around the zippers are a big no no. It looks like my old baby blanket, the tear is hard to fix esp on such thin fabrics, unless they manage to find the exact same fabric and switch out that part but it'll be obvious the fabric is new cuz the rest of the dress already aged. (Like historical fashion professionals work sort of like professional paintings preserver. The painting guy carefully clean and touch up old paintings to keep it looking as original as they can. They wouldn't let anyone just take it home and return it with a stain, even if it's a stain that can be removed easily normally, but it's an old painting and the way to clean it is different!)

Sweat, skin cells, sebum, etc.. will oxidize and they will literally eat the fibers of the fabric, it’s the reason why it’s so difficult to preserve clothing which have been worn. The dress is not only missing crystals, teared and overstretched, the fabric will disappear, be discolored or become extremely and I mean EXTREMELY fragile like in «Impossible to be preserved » in all the areas where Kim’s body secretions touched it. It’s a dress that you didn’t even know existed before Kim wore it, also the owners of the dress are adamant that it’s not ruined. On top of that, all historical art is restored, meaning at one point it’s completely changed and no longer 100% authentic. People that own historical art, like Ripleys, are master restorers. Absolutely not, you don’t know Marilyn if you think that. First of all, it is a dress that you didn’t even know existed before Kim wore it. It is a material item. The owners of the dress are adamant that it’s not ruined. On top of that, all historical art is restored, meaning at one point it’s completely changed and no longer 100% authentic. People that own historical art, like Ripleys, are master restorers. So even if it really was damaged it won’t be for long. On top of all that, if you knew Marilyn’s personality you’d know she wouldn’t care if Kim’s butt stretched a dress of hers, she just wouldn’t, she would laugh more at all the nonsense that came of Kim wearing it by the public.

People completely forgot that fashion and furniture are fully restorable up to a point. None of us would ever know if the true Marilyn dress is already a replica and JFK kept the original in a vault. None of us would know the truth behind that. The only truth we do know for a fact is that conservation is different than restoration. They conserved the dress in a place for over 40 years and when someone paid the price, they can fully restore it. Not a huge deal after that. It even benefitted the museum overall. Along with the fundraiser that is the Met Gala…..so it was for fundraising purposes yes for Kim’s personal financial gain, however she helped many thousands of others profit off this stunt as well. On top of that, Kardashian knew that wearing the dress would damage it. She has a collection of purses and such in a climate-controlled building, and she'd absolutely lose it if someone treated a piece from her collection like she treated this dress. Kim knew her star was waning. She did this as a publicity stunt, to compare herself to and insinuate that she's better than Monroe.

@@sofijones5048 I did some digging and because Monroe didn't have any other family, her estate was sent to her mentor when she died 4 months after the event (dress was in May, death was in August). I believe around 1999 was when it was "found" again in her mentor's items and eventually put up for auction in 2016. It's listed as part of the estate, (the mentor Strasberg died in 1982) so best I can assume is that the children only got around to selling that specific piece years after for whatever reason (authenticity, pure financial need, sentimental value but ran out of space, etc). I saw something that seemed like it was sold or loaned to a private collection (they made a UV case and archival dress base to hold and preserve it ) It was sold by Juliens in 2016, and reading about it (one of the people there) stated they were on the phone with a museum, but only pre-approved bidders were allowed (meaning they had a specific budget they were able to spend). Best I can tell is that Ripley's had more money to "play with" than the museum or other bidders and that was why they won. Not that museums weren't given the chance, but that they didn't have the money overall or they didn't have the budget to spend that much for a single item that while historically significant holds more "Hollywood movie" type value Same as any of the old "masters" paintings. Theres MANY that are in private collections because the museums get out bid, in this case it happened to be a "museum" that's more a showcase and entertainment attraction than a museum dedicated to proper preservation of historical and notable "objects"
