@voiceofreason2674 Ok sure, but those two actions aren't mutually exclusive. Angel could have been coached to hedge the on-ball screen and get back to help-side once the principal defender recovers back to Clark, and likewise when Angel would rotate up the rest of the defense behind her compensates and rotates to fill the gap in the middle of the paint. It's just basic team defense rotations, and it looked like the team has never run a "shell" drill to familiarize themselves with defensive rotations.

You know why she did this? Same reason for Dawn Staley last year, they both are stubborn and don´t respect Clark´s game at all, they were being arrogant and thinking just her shooting would be enough as long as they stopped everybody else. @@alphonsomorris793 Clark is more dangerous as a playmaker, in this game she had 27 passes, ter teammates made 12. Best way to execute this gameplan is to face guard her and be in her hip 40 minutes so she has to worry about protecting the ball first instead of being given so much time to scan the floor and even rest a little bit, like shes bringing the ball up 90% of the game

@@Crosley3251 it worked 4 times and almost worked against West Virginia. CC is great no doubt, but she's only quick when shes iniciating a fast break, if she has to try to get to the rim off the bounce many defenders proved they can stay in front of her, tall defenders also disrupt her passing vision. Best defense against her is always face guard and box and one, because she loses energy in the 4 quarter and gets limited to only being a scorer. You make some valid points: 1. Drop coverage was a ridiculously stupid strategy. 2. Same for going under screens in pick and roll action involving Clark. But I have to say....I doubt very much this was the strategy. As bad as Mulkey is I don't think she's that stupid. Kids at all levels make this mistake all the time. They don't properly attach to the ball handler and wind up running into the lower end of the screen then MUST go under. Been there done that. Improper awareness and communication....happens all the time with drop coverage...defender on screener remains silent. 3. Pressing Clark in the back court not bright when you assign YOUR SLOWEST AND LEAST ATHLETIC DEFENDER TO HER!!! If you're gonna do anything in the back court you stunt then deny WITH A LONG AND ATHLETIC DEFENDER GUARDING CLARK..WHICH MULKEY HAS AN ABUNDANCE OF. And that's the biggest thing you missed. How on earth did Mulkey come up with that assignment? She's got athletes. The strategy should have been to faceguard Clark all over the floor with an athlete and selectively stunt when she got the ball in her hands. Trap or hard hedge the ball screens. Clark would get hers no matter what...but she'd be worn down half way through the 3rd quarter. What you got wrong or missed: 1. Middle vs. sideline - This is a debatable issue in hoops. If you set your defense up properly, pushing to sideline makes perfect sense. The strategy involves shrinking the court and trapping and rotating on the baseline. It's the method I preferred when I coached. I always felt the middle was the place that afforded offensive players the most options. But my defense was set up to defend the baseline. NO MIDDLE was my mantra. 2. You missed a key component to the type of defense played by LSU... and just about all teams today....pack style. The gap coverages by LSU players off the ball was horrible. Yes...too many straight line drives by Clark due to a poor matchup but the positioning of LSU defenders was horrible. This is a telltale sign of an uncoached and undisciplined defensive team. 3. As noted above, the matchup on Clark was HORRIBLE out of the gate. I almost spilled my beer on that first possession. And Mulkey never really made an adequate adjustment until the end of the game....2 min to be precise. 4. Pace and breakways. You correctly pointed LSU's failure to transition properly. Iowa is not a fast team but they are really well conditioned, can run run run, and pass up the floor with proper spacing, precision and skill. Not so with LSU....who looks like a team not properly conditioned....especially Reese who got beat down the floor consistently. Long shots = fast breaks...a killer for teams that don't transition well. LSU's attack strategy worked well in the first half. Drive and pound it in. They got away from that in the second half and it hurt them. They were dead tired by the end of the game. Sidenote: I coached a kid in HS who was a top recruit at Baylor. Told me our HS practices were far more physically and mentally intense than what occurred at Baylor. SOmetimes a thing ain't what it looks like from the outside.

After watching these defensive breakdowns I’m came to the conclusion that many of these coaches particularly old school coaches don’t even bother teaching defensive basketball because their idea of defense is hand checking & physical contact, & since these coaches no longer have that luxury, they just develop the street ball mentality of standing around underneath the basket & wait for the rebound (Drop Coverage)This explains why players today are so bad at rotation & help. And to add some truth to this Geno Auriemma who’s been coaching since the late 70s was interviewed a few years ago & said “There is no defense in basketball, It’s all about scoring:.

100% .... right on. With appropriate defense, Caitlin may still have made some of those shots or made an assist, but placing Angel Reese in the key watching Clark make shots made no sense. This is not on Reese; it's on the coaching. Guarding Clark 1 on 1 was doomed from the start. I recall one Big 10 team beat Iowa this season by doing just what you are suggesting. Mulkey gave up on Clark without a fight, and her defensive alignment is proof. And, how about LSU's offense? They had 23 total offensive rebounds (!!!) and 19 more shots than Iowa (!!!), and still came up short...WOW! Was actually waiting for this video, they shrugged their shoulders like they was playing good defense and they had better offense , definitely under coached and out coached, HVL guarding Clark is a joke , great season and tournament but they deserve this L , I said Clark would have 30 and 14 assists in a Loss, boy was I wrong😅

I said this about Lebron the other nite and his 9 "Threes" and his 40K plus points...i will say similar here; Kaitlin has scored more points than anyone in the NCAA..as a coach its simple.."at no time do we leave Kaitlin open..EVER!".. awful coaching is the problem..

You say its not the player's fault, but they know what to do and where to be at this point. Its the players not executing. They dont need to be coached up to sprint or not flip their hips to open up the right side. Its not like all they needed was the coach to say so and everything would have changed. You criticize coaches but don't think like you actually are a coach. Ultimately its up to your players executing.

After how they won last year...not good winners. I knew the script was going to be flipped this time, since the days of Jack Johnson, we know the routine by now, when it concerns certain people.

you’re spot on. My issue was like , as good as Caitlin is, she’s leading d1 in scoring on RHYTHM shots. Like if she’s just gonna bake you one on one on heavily contested deep jumpers, that’s one thing. But it’s like, all her points were on RHYTHM shots. You’re going under on screens on d1’s leader in threes attempted? For someone who isn’t as developed a scorer as say a Paige beuckers, Caitlin is someone who doesn’t have a floater, doesn’t have a serious in between/midrange game, doesn’t have a eurostep or any serious interior finishing moves, and (as a tall point guard 6’0”, taller than average for her position in womens basketball/WCBB) has zero post game. She’s an incredible player, but LSU and a lot of these teams that play iowa don’t even force her to go to any of her counter moves as a scorer. It’s so frustrating to watch. Drop coverage on the nations leading outside scorer is ridiculoussssss. Angel Reese is the best big woman in d1, leads the nation in boards, leads the nation in blocks. Essentiallly the womens college Wilt/AD hybrid. A great defender on the interior. Whyyyyy would LSU not press on the perimeter and force Clark (or the roller on a PNR pass) to have to score on Reese?? Why aren’t they trusting her defense?? She had like four blocks this game Alone. It’s like they watched no tape and did not prepare. And HVL could not guard a steel chair , but it’s like there was zero discipline. Games like this make me hate Clark through no fault of her own, bc she’s not MJ, but clearly she is if no one is gonna guard her correctly

Honestly I don’t believe there’s a gameplan to counter CC. She’s too talented at scoring and moving the ball. LSU won last year by out shooting the rest of the Iowa team and CC couldn’t keep up. This year, CC made damn sure she got her teammates involved and it made it virtually impossible to lock her down offensively. Altogether the Hawkeyes shot 46% from the field and 42% from 3. Sometimes you just can’t counter a team that shoots that well without stopping them from shooting that well😂

@@voguehaven5154 Clark had 12 assists lil bro. You can’t double every play without giving up free buckets to the open player. Stuelke had 8pts, Affolter had 16pts which is her 2nd highest total on the season, and Kate Martin had 21pts as well as 6 rebounds. It was pick your poison for LSU. Iowa played extremely well when moving the ball. LSU’s best stretch of the game is when they were creating chaos and turnovers on the defensive end. But then Clark relaxed and was able to calmly pick out the right pass while breaking the half court press. Just an elite team performance.

Unfortunately, UCONN will not be able to hang with Iowa no matter what they try to do. The best they can hope for is CC going 0-9 or 0-12 from 3 pt land to start the game. That was the only thing that kept the WV and Nebraska teams close. It's already evident that CC has the talent around her to make-up for any of her shortcomings. The whole team will need to play like bums...
