Phenomenal retrospect on a fantastic and underrated game franchise! Thoroughly well written as always, keep up the great work.

Chris Huelsbeck still dearly loves this franchise with his recent Turrican Anthology project where he rearranged/remixed just about every single Turrican song from Turrican 1 all the way up to Super Turrican 2. He currently has a fundraising campaign where he plans to completely orchestrate the best OST in the series; Turrican 2: The Final Fight. You heard that right, with an actual Orchestra. If Chris Huelsbeck's kickstarted campaigns have done super well, I can only imagine a campaign for a brand new Turrican game.

Fun fact. At 1:04 the stance that Turrican is doing is exactly the same as the Manowar warrior from the ‘Kings of Metal’ album by Manowar (1988).

If you loved Turrican,get Hurrican,it's a fanmade Turrican clone,available for free download,for Windows,basically a tribute/hommage with more modern graphics and it has the huge explorable levels,with secrets etc. and is really challenging.

I love your videos, Kim! You have a soothing voice :) And yep,the Turrican game series rules! Super Turrican started my game music career - I played Super Turrican in 1995, beat it (difficulty is very easy on ST1), then read the snail mail address of the development team (Factor 5) in the credits. I gave them a phone call and asked for Chris Hülsbecks address & phone number, then I sent a demo tape which I made to Chris. Then I was invited into Chris' music studio, we became friends and worked on the first game projects in 1996! We're still working on game projects together. For example, I scored Giana Sisters DS and Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams. Cheers, Rapture

Thanks for this. Turrican has been and always will be my favorite game of all time. I played Turrican II so much that I was able to finish the game with 60 extra lives and my personal record score of 3,752,500 points. Today, even using a trainer, I cannot recreate that score ... What a game. Great review, too! PS: Trenz was not at the helm for Turrican II, that was pretty much a Factor 5 production.

Absolutely loved the C64 and was totally blown away by the Amiga versions back then as a teenager. I remember how long it took for them to publish part 3 on the Amiga and I got it on the first day of its release and then played it through on my very first attempt. That was somehow very disappointing. Turrican II is certainly the best of the bunch and I actually like the cleaner graphics over the later parts. Can’t wait for my Turrican Collection to arrive for the PS4. You were absolutely right! ;)

It's 2020, and we finally have some news with the upcoming Turrican Anthology for PS4 and Switch. Thank the lord for emulators :)

The SNES Super Turrican is definitely not a remix as you said, it has some leveles that look kind of similar to the ones from 2 but are totally different, and the last world shares a boss and backgraounds with Turrican 3/Mega but the design of the stages is different, so is overall a new game that shares a little bit with 3/Mega

Fair play, this game takes me back. European late 80's early 90's games have a very unique feel, the console slickness of Sega/Nintendo made the euro-bods up their game in terms of all round presentation. 2d side scrollers will never die, some of the most fun you can have in gaming comes from this very fertile wellspring of ultra-violence.

Great History lesson of Turrican! My Brother and I completed both games when I was 29 and he was 30.. I had just got out of the military and was staying with him an his wife. We swapped after every death and completed both of them .. along with Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes back. The best of times with the Best of games.. the Turrican Series and the Dungeon Master Series are the best of the best. I just wish I could find a C64 version of Turrican for sale On Ebay!.. No One wants to sell it!

Turrican 3 was pretty much the first game I ever I got hyped for just by hearing it was being made. I loved the first two and the prospect of a third was awesome to me. I wasn't disappointed in the slightest, to be honest. Then again, I was still a kid when T3 came out and didn't really notice the more linear levels. If Manfred Trenz chooses to do a new Turrican, I really hope he'd be smart enough to make it a 2D game. Turrican in 3D just sounds like a terrible idea to me.

Actually, the Amiga version of Turrican 1 came out the same year as the C64 version (1990). That and yes, many of the stages in the SNES Super Turrican were loosely based on those of T1 & 2, the designs themselves were greatly different (though, you do get a lot of the same vibe, so I could definitely see how you came to such a conclusion). With that out of the way, very nice job! I'm a huge fan of the series (Heck, I'm currently doing a retrospective of it myself. Great minds think alike, I suppose) and I think you represented it rather well. Went right into my favorites! XD

Two things I wouldn't mind seeing, 1. Turrican 1, 2, 3, Super Turrican 1 and 2 remastered for today's hardware with much better visuals and sounds but keep the core of the game the same, could be done 2D or 3D like Trine did it, 2. I would like them to try a new take on it in completely 3D to see if they could make a good game of it., I would back a kickstarter project for both of these.

Was this on by the same people behind Apidya II? I think Chris Hulsbeck did the music for Apidya. I know he did the music for Great Giana Sisters. Kaiko did Apidya! I still wonder... if only the Sharp X68K was released outside Japan... what the Japanese could have seen? Apidya would make a good Third Person Rail Shooter... or even a JRPG... had it been ported over to the consoles, the Japanese might have adopted the franchise.

I've always found Turrican 3/Mega Turrican to be my favourite one because of how i just know (mostly) on what im doing, in the 1st and 2nd one i cant see whats going to jump at me or if im about to jump into an endless pit because of how my character is 20 feet across the centre of the screen. Ive also found that the games have gotten better and better the more they progress, with 1 being my least favourite since i just hate the difficulty and the "where the hell do i go" stages. Also the first turrican game i played was mega turrican so uh im a disgrace to the turrican community i guess.

@TheDaoOfLatino10 жыл бұрын
Kimble Justice I guess that means we won't see you do anything but a quick look at Strider (2014). I'm sorry you were so disappointed by it. I sort of saw this thing coming seeing as Double Helix made two of the worst games for two of my favorite franchises (Silent Hill and Front Mission), and the game, much like Killer Instinct (2013) is rendered in such high contrast that it basically comes off as gray and brown. Everything is really dark and it makes a series that was supposed to look chipper into something more morose. Oddly enough the backgrounds, if I squint hard enough, remind me of Strider Returns. Oh and good review/retrospective. The only game I've gotten my hands on is Super Turrican and despite being a somewhat flawd EQed Best Hits version I still very much enjoy it.
@whatamalike9 жыл бұрын
+Kim Justice AYe thats how I felt about it. I mean the presentation was wonderful, but yeah the gameplay was the usual cookie cutter metroidvania mold. Seriously though, Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night did that style so well that theres no real need for anything else in that style to be released outside of fangames, especially those series' like strider which have no purpose in that gameplay style.

Mega is fun, but I want an authentic experience.

The Genesis version's health meter drains a LOT quicker, there are more enemies and if you're playing it on an American system, the game runs faster. The game was always very hard, but the Genesis version takes that to a whole other level.

Good series (with excellent music) but I always hated the scrolling in the first two (it's even more annoying in that NES ver. where the sprites are smaller so it's more obvious), as it just kind of stresses me out to have to memorize layouts or take it slow in a run 'n gun.
