That was fun. Nice to see the clean sweep. I wasn't sure about presentation, but I like the conclusions you reached here. I think Mega Turrican is quite a bit better than Super Turrican. I enjoyed it much more when I played them. It's one game where the increased resolution on the Genesis felt so much better in how it affected the game's design. Not that Super Turrican is bad. It may even be more appealing to those who grew up with the earlier Turrican games. But Mega Turrican is way more my style. Plus it has some actual rotation effects, which must be magic. And I love that plasma rope. Anyway, fun video to watch.

I noticed that. Sometimes the SNES version sounded kinda "light" or "fuzzy" where as the Sega sounds were pretty unorthodox they were super clear and we'll balanced. A perfect example is compare the soundtrack of earthworm jim on Sega and Snes. The Snes version sounds very blah and less pronounced than the Segas soundtrack.

I would say Snes OST sounds better (like the boss theme and stage 1-3) and some sfx I liked (The laser that the jumping robot shoots) but yeah Sega nailed in many aspects of gameplay, more levels and stuff.

"You need to be careful though, because you can easily run out of time." One of my biggest gripes about arcade style games; Why the hell do home games have level timers? "Here' s a big level with lot of secrets, ripe for exploring, but we're not going to allow to spend much time doing that." The level timer is the reason that I never bothered to put in the effort to try and beat the first or second Turrican games without cheating. "Well, you got to the exit, but you took one second too long, so you lose a life." Level timers are bullshit.

@@Urmrgay955 It's like racing games with checkpoint timers. The game keeps track of what position I'm in, so why not let me finish the race? Or at least keep racing until X number of cars cross the finish line and I lose. On an arcade machine, a timer sort of makes sense because they don't want someone taking an hour to play the game, but on home games, timers are pointless. They only serve to artificially increase the difficulty. Sometimes I imagine being able to follow the developers around and impose arbitrary time limits on everything they do. "You have 60 seconds to use the bathroom. You have 7 seconds to go up these stairs. You have 3 seconds to dial that phone number. You have 3 minutes to eat lunch."

@@sloppynyuszi Well, they look different, because they are earlier games, however I would say that Turrican 2 visual quality is good enough that it becomes more about crisp Turrican 2 style vs rich Mega Turrican style choice than quality itself. Many Amiga games in general often have 2 issues when compared to console games - wonky controls or animation, but Turrican is actually ok here. Jumping with joystick up is perfectly fine, it depends more on a game's implementation and gameplay design if that input method is ok or not, and in case of Turrican it works quite well. In general jump button is more accurate while joystick up is quicker. However there is a different issue with Turricans on Amiga and that is how those 2 games handle collisions. Turrican 1 and 2 use home computer style of not having any visual cues of taking damage, you walk into enemy and you simply hear buzzing sound while your health bar decreases. Its a design that's been in use since earliest 8bit home computer games and probably has a lot to do with how "homegrown" developers were or hardware limitations. By all means this is inferior way of handling collisions, something no one liked even when they were used to it. To this day I think it is the only thing holding down Turrican II from becoming the ultimate shooting platformer. Yes it is just that good and big open levels to explore are big part of it. Mega Turrican is very good, it has some advantages, someone may even like it more, but in the end it is a different game that has what people see as "Turrican parts" toned down to allow for more "arcade" style. This actually makes comparison hard so I always say "just play both".

Actually this game shows how "goofy" and compromised Mode 7 can be. The effects in Super Turrican mostly look worse than the ones in Mega Turrican and when Mode 7 occurs, backgrounds are reduced to minimal because Mode 7 can't apply to sprites but only to background!

They even managed to get some transparency effects in there. The rotation and scaling effects are quite smooth too, in Mega Turrican. I think the developers were quite familiar with Sega's hardware, or had experience with similar architecture (Amiga)

That's a limitation for mode 7 as it can only do so with background elements, while the Genesis version used software rotation, not hardware rotation, the ones in mega look very pixelated when doing so, and really it's only applied to very minor things other than the title screen, even then with mode 7 bosses you could implement foreground elements to look like background elements, after all Super was rushed.

Yeah a lot of times using mode seven could have big disadvantage compared to using regular sprites, since it acts on your background layer. Thats why you always see these flat colors and gradiants when you have mode 7 bosses. Kind of looks cheap and its always for some lame rotation or scaling. And since they are backround and not sprites, a lot of times they kind of interact weirdly with the characters, with vaeguely defined hit boxes. Mode 7 for anything else than bground i think has aged the worst in super nintendo games, impressive back then, but sega managed to do some impressive and more timeless bosses and gimmicks with clever use of sprites, like the multijointed bosses in things like gunstar heroes or castlevania bloodlines.

Honestly the bosses in Mega Turrican aren't that great, and go down as easily as any other Turrican boss that isn't from T1 and ST2, rebound breaks the game's difficulty and makes the bosses feel like filler.

Its true that they are on the easy side, but since you have to beat the game in one sitting and since there are so many of them i didn't mind. Still took me some tries to beat the game my first time. Overall I enjoyed them, they have cool designs with big detail sprites and they add variety constantly to the experience

AVGN did talk about Batman Forever on SNES and it was horrible due to the Mortal Kombat combo controls and wish I kept mine. Sega Genesis version is really horrible if you have a three button controller

Sega mauls that version too. It's got some interesting elements too it still the Sega version is smoother and more refined in game play and like the SNES it's missing like half its backgrounds. Also the music sounds so choppy on the Amiga, this could also be because the Amiga version is kind of makeshift port of the Sega version.

SNES was capable of doing amazing things at that time but I feel that it’s games don’t look that well now, mode 7 looks like crap! Sega Génesis graphics are sharper, faster and don’t slow down. Sound is better than Genesis overall, if you listen through a the tv speakers....if you are using a good pair of extra speakers Genesis sounds way louder and sonorous. I think this is because the Genesis sound chip is a “real” instrument and SNES’s is a more like a music player.

Nice Episode as always, but Super Turrican 2 would be the better competitor for Mega Turrican. In an interview back then the devs where talking of the troubles they had with the SNES Hardware. So they made Super Turrican a simple yet solid platformer that would fit a 4 MB cartridge. With Super Turrican 2 you have all your effects stuff and gameplay variety which is missing in Super Turrican.

No way. Mega Turrican and Super Turrican are the akin games and in fact, both of them were developed at the same time. Super Turrican 2 was developed much later than either of these two. The problem is, Mega Drive doesn't have an akin game to Super Turrican 2 (ie, a Mega Turrican 2) unfortunately. I guess this was because of all of the publishing problems Factor 5 always had with their Mega Drive games, including Mega Turrican which was delayed one year of release because Konami was going to release and then it pulled it off. Data East had to publish it in the end. Heck, even the Amiga conversion of Mega Turrican (ie, Turrican 3) came first because of this fact. And Factor 5 also couldn't release their Mega Drive version of Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures because of publishing issues with US Gold and it's still unreleased up to this day (though it appears that it may receive and after-market release sometime in the future). Yeah, I think the sum of all this is the reason why there never was a Mega Turrican 2 on the Mega Drive to compete with Super Turrican 2.

Gabriel Martinez I’m sorry if I’m misunderstanding but it really is true, most TVs only had 1 speaker. A lot of people had better audio setups with multiple speakers but usually the TV itself could only produce mono, hence why the Model 1 Mega Drive only supports mono output over its usual cables. *EDIT:* nvm I was given false info, I did some more research and by the early 1990’s a lot of TVs had stereo. Still though, a lot of people would’ve still had mono TVs. Surround was pretty overkill regardless of stereo or mono in the 90’s, but it’s cool that it supported it.

Loved Super Turrican *2* back when I was younger; I was obsessed with it as I grew up with the Turrican series on my Commodore 64 (and on a friend's Amiga. Turrican 2 for the Amiga is probably the best of the lot).

The soundtrack rocked on that (another Chris Huelsbeck masterpiece). I remember back that ST2 got 'okay' reviews, but I loved it. So many cool, varied stages and graphics.

@@thevoivod I also love Super Turrican 2 on the SNES. I got addicted to the series with Turrican II on the C64. For anyone who doesn't know, the Genesis/Mega Drive game Universal Soldier is really Turrican II but with the flying part removed and replaced by original on foot part, and they modified the character sprite. The game was developed as Turrican II then got a very late change to cash in on the movie. Great game.

Wow I was barely 1/3 in the way in and it looks like the Genesis version is smashing the Super Nintendo version like hard. Don't get me wrong I expected the super Nintendo to completely blow the Genesis port out of the water, that doesn't look like the case for this game I've always had the feeling that this game was 10 times better on the Genesis, I stopped watching on the music section of the video and the music on the Genesis is freaking badass. The super Nintendo is okay but you can hear all the instruments on the Genesis not to mention everything else that surpassed the SNES and I haven't even finished the review

I knew it'd be Mega Turrican. I was a SNES guy 'growing up' (nearly 40 now, ouch!) but it was games like this, Contra and Castlevania that made me turn around and notice the MD as an equal to the SNES and that they both possess stronger and weaker iterations of similar or the same games. As it happens, I'm actually now a full on MD > SNES guy nowadays and that didn't come easy. I still adore the SNES, but the MD has more of the sort of stuff I wanna play as of 2020 ❤️👍

Great video. I was worried the "clarity" on Sound was going to give SNES the win, but when that gritty punchy sound is used right, it can destroy Sony's sound chip and this does. The fart sound, true, is annoying though, but with a soundtrack that cool sounding best sound is on SEGA. Good video guys. Happy to see you're still getting them out there.

I know the Sega Genesis is technically inferior than the Super Nintendo on several fronts, but something about the Genesis is just so damn alluring. I think it's the sound chips in the Genesis that push it over for me (ignoring the scratchy voice sounds).

Thats what makes the 16 bit generation so interesting , on paper snes had superior specs in most areas , however it just rarely panned out in many titles due to some shortcomings on the snes side. The PCM sampled sound on the snes took more memory space than on the genesis so often the genesis had more animation conversly. Also although the genesis had a huge colour deficit it had 25% more horizontal resolution eg field of view , most genesis games ran 320 pixels wide , while the snes games most were 256 pixels wide , this mattered for gameplay where you often saw more on genesis. Sonically the FM sound on the genesis although awefull in some games (gem driver) could also be near unbeatable (16 bit systems) as witnessed in mega turrican . Particular sound drivers could really make a difference, look up guantlet 4 , midnight resistance, verytex, (any game with Histoshi Sakimotos sound driver is stellar) and checkout savaged regime on you tube to see what the genesis can put out - its mind blowing. Hooked up to high end hifi FM vs PCM from this era holds up very well . Then there was the cpu , although similar in MIPs (genesis had slight lead still) the data bus in the genesis was a lot stronger and rarely did you see slow down in genesis titles allowing more animation etc. See Toy Story where Travellors tales programmed both snes and genesis versions , often the sega version is superior particularly in the doom type 3d sections which were heavy on cpu. The snes real strength was as it matured and the super-fx chips where the system was augmented - those games eg Yoshis Island amongst others were just incredible and in affect you had multiple processors then benefiting the game . There are examples of fantastic games on both systems - in general i'm a 16 bit fan with a preference to the genesis , the genesis was stronger than its specs suggested vs snes.

@@shannonbirt8123 Genesis was also more cost effective, all of the higher meg carts, Fx chips, and SA chips in snes carts made them more expensive to produce and more expensive for the consumer (chip enhanced games generally costed 70USD or more), this also meant fewer devs could afford to use them, devs could get an impressive game running on Genesis with just stock hardware (and a really good programmer).

@@shannonbirt8123 One of the biggest advantages of the choice in sound chips for the Genesis was the number of voices they could output at one time (10 or 11 depending on settings) vs the the number in the SNES (8). This meant games tended to not drop instruments for a sound effect nearly as much. Also, the more sounds you can play at once, the more dynamic the music can be. Look at the YMF262 (OPL3) used on PCs in the 90s. It had up to 18 voices. The songs people make in trackers for it are insane and crazy deep.

@@railsrust That's not accurate. The Genesis had a Yamaha YM2612 that gave it 6FM sound channels. Only one of these 6FM sound channels can be used for a PCM voice or drum sample. The Genesis couldn't play 2 samples at once unless it cut the sample rate in half (used in Street Fighter 2). So in most Genesis games when a 2 PCM sound effects play simotameously one gets cut out. Additionally, the Genesis had the Sega Master System's sound chip built in as well the SN76489 PSG chip, which is capable of producing three square wave channels and one noise channel. This is a very rudimentary sound chip and tons of Genesis games didn't even make use of it. Western devs in particular didn't use it much.

@@supersexysega Yes that is true - the 6+4 channels were not all equal and they were not always used , however i'd suggest Genesis didnt need 8 pcm channels, couple would have helped no doubt in some situations, the games that did used all channels would definately miss the SN76489s input - like anything the music is a sum of all its parts not just any one channel , the sounds that chip contributed are very noticeable and clean sounding - bells / crimbles and flutes etc. Latter systems (saturn) and arcade boards still used FM and PCM combinations and i don;t think its a given that solely PCM was the best audio - although later systems went that way as its simpler to develop for. My observation is snes and genesis had different types of music , to my ear i have a preference for the genesis sound as its seems smoother - clearer with less muffle , brighter notes and its more continuous as i think FM can have longer chords particularly in the same amount of memory allocated. Some say the snes could have just sampled the genesis and made any genesis sound - with unlimited memory possibly but we all new memory was super limited back then so its about how much sound you could get per kb etc and many snes tracks are very repetitive due to lack of memory - genesis also (but less affected due to not been 100% pcm). Some tracks on the snes are unbelievably good also , my personal favorite on snes is demonscrest - fantastic sound track. I have a large collection of the 16 bit soundtracks - Amiga included and there is great stuff on all three systems however my preference is the Genesis for the overall package although its not the cleanest sound at times or the best at all genres.

Grandes juegos los dos aunque para mí mejor el de Megadrive ya que los run and gun siempre son más rápidos en esta ya que en Snes todo es más pausado.Decir también que superturrican2 es el que mejores gráficos tiene de la saga en 16bits pero también se hace lento viniendo del Megaturrican que es frenético y más arcade.
