Yay, I got a mention :D But just remembered, Ocean's Vindicator was a sequel to Rush n' Attack/Green Beret. But they kept adding/removing the Green Beret 2 moniker from the box art and adverts.

Yep, you always had to test whether a text adventure understood any swear words. Part of the fun :) Many of them had amusing responses (often involving Mary Whitehouse, the UK's self-appointed moral guardian of the era) but some games killed you for it - instant game over - or even reset the computer. Harsh :)

Outrun Europa looks quite fun on C64. I think it's reputation mainly comes from the lousy Speccy version. What was 'reviewed' (although that's debateable) in magazines looks like the unfinished prototype as reviewers gushed about it's playability and full colour graphics. However, what was released on the Speccy was a boderline unplayable mess with horrible collision detection, crap looking sprites and it was all monochrome. Looking at a playthrough of it, they even had the cheek to rip off the ending animation sequence directly from Ocean's Speccy port of Chase HQ, a far superior game in every way.

@Kim_Justice4 жыл бұрын
Oooh, exclusive level? Intriguing! Has this been dumped?
@thefurthestmanfromhome11484 жыл бұрын
@@Kim_Justice The game took 5 months to develop on Lynx, coding having started in Jan 1991...game was finished, went through Atari approval scheme..coder called back in to fix bugs, add extras Atari wanted such as continue game option, last thing coded...'For Demo. Purposes Only' message. Game had map data supplied from the Amiga version, music from ST version. Coder played the Amiga version a lot and built game from that. Lynx version made easier and had an exclusive, secret level. Atari very keen to see game done, provided coder with lot of test code and documentation on Lynx, which made development far easier. Coder never kept any backups,doesnt think Tiertex did either, said EPROMS simply thrown in drawer and forgotten about. Atari gave coder the go ahead to do a Panther version next, but Panther itself canned soon after. Pure speculation as to why Atari never released Lynx version but thoughts are along lines of: Declining Lynx market, cost of manufacturing carts, Atari canning projects left,right and center.

I can say that I have never actually played this on any system, but it looks like I'm not missing out on much, though I will surely find a ROM and give it a go now! Gauntlet never needed to go isometric any more than it needed to go 3D, all of the Gauntlet games after Gauntlet II were a complete shambles in my eyes!

In my mind the only game to get close to that Gauntlet feel since Gauntlet II, is Monolyth's 'Get Medieval'..... Now that is a worthy spiritual successor IMO!

I must admit to rather enjoying Outrun Europa on the Master System. It had so few driving games of note, and most of those tragically bare-bones (even gradient changes were a huge luxury), to see one with so much actual scenery, grandients, forks, etc. was such a novelty I could forgive the choppiness and weird camera. I might have felt the same for the C64 version, had it possessed a less frustrating nitro system ... and not been horribly overshadowed by Chris Butler's astounding Turbo Charge coming out at the same time, of course. I had Bombjack 2 on the C16 and had very mixed feelings as it was on one hand pretty decent by C16 standards, and on the other nothing like Bombjack. I never knew it had such a weird origin, but all suddenly makes sense.

I used to complain about the big companies going after little fan projects more than I do now. In the U.S., if such a project is brought to the attention of a company, and they don't fight it, that provides evidence against them protecting their I.P., and could be used to show that they have abandoned said I.P. It depends on the court and jurisdiction, but there is a potential risk of I.P. rights loss/challenge for PD status if you don't at least issue C&D, at least in the U.S. . Since the big N does a lot of business in the U.S., and the removal of ZeroPaige's C64 Mario marvel was done through a DMCA takedown, that means it was handled via U.S. law. I'll be the first person to admit that we need a TON of reforms in the U.S., though I would also say that IP laws should probably not be at the forefront of said reforms ahead of fixing our abysmal healthcare, lax environmental law, big-business-favoring tax law, and unbelievably excessive military spending. It sucks to lose an awesome Mario fan project, but it sucks worse to get bankrupted by a broken leg.

The problem with Strider is that the speed and fluidity are the main gameplay mechanics Including attacking as fast as you can by hammering the button. So a lot of slower 8 bit ports feel lacking. Interesting and well-researched, as usual. Gauntlet III on the C64 is, as you'll be aware, pretty hard to find on disk only (understatement). In fact, Commodore Format sent me a disk original back in the early 1990s to do an infinite lives cheat listing for. I managed to get that done, and sent it back to CF, not realising of course what rarity it would become. Eventually that very copy ended up in the hands of Mat Allen, established C64 knowledgable person and collector. And how did we know it was the same copy? My name had been saved in the high score table after playing the game for a while with the cheat and then quitting. It was decent enough, the soundtrack (Tim and Geoff Follin) also decent too.
