It also combines platforming levels with shooter mechanic sections, allows you to choose the order you take at the beginning... From the footage it seems Kim just played two minutes of the default first level and gave up on it. What's odd about those comments to me is that you could easily say the same or worse about a lot of clunky old ugly floaty platformers that Kim raves about! But then we all have our own biases and nostalgia ;)

8:10 Wait, WHAT?! This isn't Japan. Warriors of Fate is Tenchi o Kurau II. It's the sequel to Dynasty Wars, both are based on a Japanese comic book version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Set in China. A thousand years before feudal Japan. It's literally 2D Dynasty Warriors. Same characters, though western translation gave them Mongol names for some reason.

I lived in Japan until 2010 and Tenchi wo Kurau 2 was at every old school arcade there. This is just my personal experience but it seemed to be the beat em up with the most longevity over there. To me it is the true sequel to final fight and my favourite beat em up.

Ramzes XIII I do too. The graphics alone make it worth playing, but it is also a lot of fun. Plus, it is similar in gameplay to stuff she loves, like Green Beret (I would actually say it is superior to that). Oh well, at least Kim’s taste is not overly predictable.

Strider has the best, and quite possibly the scariest attract mode ever in an arcade game. I used to think Strider must be the hardest game ever created, you see about 5-10 seconds of rock hard gameplay and then it's suddenly back to the title screen before you even got a chance to focus on what was going on. Also well before Sonic The Hedgehog, seeing Hiryu being able to run around the ceiling and spin around that satellite with the legendary words "NOBODY EVER HAS CLEARED THIS STAGE" blew my mind. Back when I was a young lad, I used to think that nobody in the world had cleared the stage EVER!
@Andros27094 жыл бұрын
My first encounter with Strider Hiryu was with the japanese version, which somehow managed to sneak its way into a bar in northern Italy during the summer of 1989 (pirate board for sure). The fact that I couldn't understand a single word made it even more mysterious and charismatic. And man, those soundtracks... The fun fact is that I never dared to put a coin into it, it looked too damn hard, so I just watched older kids play it.

I had this same experience! Strider was at my nearest 7-11 and that visual of him running down the exploding slopes to the giant robotic monkey or rotating around the giant sphere followed by that ominous message saying no one had ever cleared this stage was downright intimidating! I would pass it by and just watch the opening and never play. I didn’t have the guts! The only other time I felt like that was the first time I saw the original mortal Kombat.

Your list is your own, and I'm glad to hear it, so I'm not complaining or anything. I'm a big fan of Dynasty Wars. I didn't expect to even like it, but it grabbed me for some reason and I ended up liking it a ton. Though I totally get that others may not enjoy it the way I do. But I really like the overall game play structure of Dynasty Wars from the charge and flurry attacks and the three distinct planes. I find it works really well. I don't get tired of returning to the game, and I really enjoy the PC Engine CD port as well. I do have to say that there is definitely a reasonable amount of strategy involved in the game and it can be played well so that it feels fair rather than a coin muncher. I think it's well designed, but there's nothing like it so it does feel odd at first. I prefer it to the sequel. While Warriors of Fate is more like later beat-em-ups, it doesn't feel as good to me, plus the music just bores me, and that's a big problem for me. I like the music in Dynasty Wars much more. The music is an issue in Knights of the Round as well. It lacks punch and the music loop is very short so it repeats too much for me and it lowers my excitement level. I also don't like the music in King of Dragons, but I don't enjoy the game itself. I do agree with your decision to treat SF2 World Warrior and Champion Edition as separate entries. Aside from the obvious differences, World Warrior surprised me how different it felt from Champion Edition the last time I revisited it. Champion Edition is my favorite of that bunch as well. As for beat-em-ups, Capcom has so many good ones, I don't like to pick a single favorite, but Cadillacs & Dinosaurs is as good as any, in my opinion, has excellent music, and it's the one that surprised me the most. It's in my top tier, as are several other Capcom games. I assume, unless I missed it, you left out Mega Man: The Power Battle as it really is a CPS2 game that was backported to the CPS1. It's interesting to hear that game with both PCM and FM versions of the music. Either way, you will cover it if you do a list for CPS2. Anyway, I did enjoy hearing your thoughts on these games. I was just in a CPS1 mood a few months back, so I played a bunch of these games fairly recently. And it was a cool arcade platform with a great library, overall.

A couple things, Forgotten World is not a twin stick shooter, it had a dial for aiming not dual sticks. You pressed the dial to shoot. Spinning it while pressed spun your aim with the orb in place, spinning it unpressed spun the orb around you. Second, Knights of the Realm was three player, not two and had Lancelot along with Percival and Arthur as selectable heroes. Great video otherwise, loved the CPS games! It may have been relatively underpowered hardware, but Capcom sure made it sing with great artwork.

It always interests me to see how the rest of the world looks at Hyper Fighting. In the US that game represented the absolute peak of the initial Street Fighter boom, with people constantly on the machines and tournaments in California drawing 100+ players. And yet, if you go on Fightcade 2 nowadays, Champion Edition gets so much more action due to its greater popularity in countries like Brazil/China/South Korea. HF has just recently started to get some more love from high-level players on there after a long period of dormancy...

I really enjoy Turbo, playing it on the 35th collection gave me a new appreciation for it. That being said Champion Edition is probably equally as good. I love how they are totally no nonsense, no gimmicks, just pure fighting - and they actually play like SF, unlike SF5 which is awful. SSF2 Turbo is the best of all but there is something the CPS1 games had that still makes them highly playable and enjoyable. Strider I would rate as lower purely because of the final level, I just think it's unfairly shit and ruins the experience lol up until that point though it's a short, sharp blast of great action. Ghouls and Ghosts I would rate much lower too, I just don't enjoy it. It's far too janky for my liking and unfairly hard rather than "tough" if that makes sense - basically when you die you feel it's because the game cheated you.

Your Dynasty War comment about it being the biggest quarter/quid muncher is possibly not quite accurate. Not based on your experience, because it looked pretty awful, but based on you not charging up your weapon. You were mashing attack and never charging your weapon to take down whole swaths of enemies or quickly/strategically take down bosses. I actually played this recently for the first time myself and I got to stage 2 with a single life because I noticed the "power" meter at the bottom and held the button down...to find out it murders enemies in quick order! So if you ever try to give this game a go in the future, it might very well be better/higher on your personal list. I just assume you gave it a quick go and left because you showed footage of only the very early game.

Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting is amazing. If we disregard ST/SF2 packaging variations, HF is my 2nd favorite SF2 version (and Fighting Game) to play for gameplay. I do prefer Super Street Fighter II Turbo currently, but SSF2T is notably not CPS1. Street Fighter II World Warrior is widely regarded as historically the most significant of any Fighting Game (or among the top). But there isn't much (compared to its sequels) in terms of its balance, roster, fewer mechanics, and slower game speed to compel player communities to keep playing it. Street Fighter II Champion Edition was a very important evolution of World Warrior. It set the tone for series sequels to be about delivering wishlist features, expert and careful balancing and other design tweaks, and more. And CE and WW were the most played versions, at the height of the general population popularity of the game, in arcade machine form. And there are still some who like to play it. But its slower game speed, fewer mechanics, and balance hasn't compelled larger player communities to keep playing it. But nostalgia and personal preference are of course cornerstone factors in why we like what we like. So your personal love for Champion Edition is completely understandable.

Forgotten Worlds wasn't a twin stick shooter. It used a weighted bearing supported knob (I'm not sure if it was an roller bearing or just a simple brass oilite bushing) that was very similar to the one on Tempest to aim and shoot. The feel was like a 1 axis trackball, if you gave it a good spin it'd keep spinning by itself for a while. This knob doubled as a fire button, you'd press down on the knob to shoot. Your weapons would autofire so you just needed to press down on the knob and hold it to shoot rather than pressing it repeatedly. Because of this unique control system emulated versions don't really capture the arcade experience.

for CPS2, i vote for marvel vs. capcom. the most intense fighting game with no slowdown, at its height of the hardware! my personal favorites were street fighter alpha 3 and x-men vs. street fighter.

Self Isolation with the family ain't so bad! My Son is playing Death Stranding on PS4 in the living room and I'm watching Kim Justice latest video reminiscing about my youth! 👌🤣

I have to agree SFII Championship Edition was the most well balanced as I have it on PSP.. Off topic one thing I wish fighters would implement like some boxing games is the option to turn off stamina bars.. Not knowing when a KO was going to come like real life would be very interesting..
