The level system is not explained very well in the anime but if they explain it in the light novels they all have a "state" (the tattoo on their back) that is divided into 5 skills: strength, endurance, dexterity, agility and magic ( only if you can use it) and each skill is divided into ten ranges i, h, g, f, e, d, c, b, a, s with i being the lowest and s the highest these ranges improve based on experience points that you acquire in battles inside the dungeon and it is the gods who raise those experience points by shedding a drop of blood on the adventurer's status each rank rises every 100 points i.e. i (0 to 99), h (100 to 199) ... s (900 to 999) that is at most what can be reached but this is reset every time an adventurer passes level, bell is now level 1 if it happens to be level 2 all their skills will return to i-0

Just to add ,During the level up, the skills stats ranking will revert to lowest rank I but the previous stats will become the base stat for the new level.

Also the reason Hestia was surprised at the beginning of episode 8 was because she noticed that all of Bell’s stats were S. Rankings are also typically D, C, B, A, and then S. S stands for Superior. Which is why it’s considered the highest rank.

It's his special ability, he grows and levels faster than normal, so all that training he did with Aiz maxed out his stats. So for he had maxed out S ranked stats for a level one. Also notice how that Minotaur was red after that guy trained it, it was an evolved higher level Minotaur compared to what he was attacked by in episode one.

Wasn't really said in the anime but aiz taught bell martial arts besides only using his knife, cuz he'd need for his fighting style since he's not a swordsman but rather close range. The dude that trained the minotaur has no connection with lily, he's in freya's familia. Aiz taking on the boss alone is a recent achievment, it made him realize the road laying in front of him won't be an easy one and it'll take him time. He was already S before fighting the cow, and his agility was SS. The minotaur didn't give anything special to bell besides being buffed af and giving him a great achievement.

Freya will help bell to growp up, and she will get the rid of any problems for him, this wasn’t shown in the anime only on the LN, but Freya asked Ottar, (the captain of Freya familia) about how bell was going, and he said her that he was going pretty good with training and gaining experience but there was a problem, that he was afraid of something, and that fear will become a wall for him, then Freya asked about what can they do about it, and Ottar told her that he was going to do something about it.

In the light novel the scene after the battle was much better :D For anyone who is interested, here is the passage from the light novel: "--! Reveria! Tell me the kid's Status --- now!" "...Are you telling me to steal personal information?" Only the skin on Bell's upper back was visible. The slots containing his Magic and Skills were obscured by what was left of his shirt. Despite all the holes, most of Bell's Status remained hidden. "It's not freakin' stealin' when it's that wide-open. Fine if ya ain't gonna look I'll ask someone who will. I can't be the only one that wants answers." Bete felt it wasn't against the law if the information just happened to come into your line of sight. He fumed at Reveria, for she had the eyes to see at this distance and the knowledge to decipher the hieroglyphs. The knowledgeable elf sighed and cast her gaze toward Bell. Perhaps she, too, was interested. Her dark emerald eyes found the hieroglyphs on Bell's back. "Dammit, what's takin' so long?" "Be patient, I've almost finished---" Reveria suddenly stopped talking, her words trailing off. Bete glared at her. Tiona and the others drifted toward the elf, drawn in by curiosity. A moment later, the elf let out an uneven laugh. "...Heh. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha." "The heck's wrong with ya, hey?! Son of a... Yo. Aiz- Ya can read hieroglyphs, too, right? Can ya see anythin' from there?" Bete angrily bared his fangs at Reveria. It looked as though something had popped loose in her head, her shoulders shaking as she laughed. So, Bete directed his question a few meders ahead where Aiz was standing. The human girl was still rooted to the same spot, her eyes focused only on the boy, She gave a quick nod and looked at his back. Her golden gaze honed on their target with the precision of a blade. "...S." "...Huh?" "All of his abilities are S" "ALL S?!" Bete's voice joined Tiona's and the others' in suprise. All other words had left them. In reality, Aiz couldn't see Bell's Magic level due to what remained of his inner shirt. However, considering what had just transpired she had a feeling it was close enough. There was one other fact she hadn't told Bete and the others. It was the very thing that had sent Reveria for a loop. SS. The boy possessed an ability that went beyond normal limits. It made her eyes spin. (page 191/192 of the third volume of the light novel) And if someone is interested in his actual Status right now (I'm not sure if they show it in the anime): Lv. 1 Strenght: S 982 Defense: S 900 Utility: S 988 Agility: SS1049 Magic: B 751 Magic: Firebolt Skill: Realis Phrase

Here goes some usefull/interesting informations: 1º - The ranks goes from "I" to "S", acording the experience you earn from killing monsters, usually when your rank is high the XP don't make big changes in your status, so... To Level up you need to defeat something beyond your limit, this way the experience earnd might result on a Level up. 2º - After level up the ranks goes back to "I", but your strenge don't goes down, so if a adventure have his status o 10 (just an example), when he level up the count will restart, but that 10 points still there, and will be add to his atual level. 3º - Rank up is something really hard, usually, take years, Ais was the faster to go to level 2, and she took 1 year for it, of course, higher the level, higher the time and difilculty to raise your level. 4º - "Prum" are one of the many races. A prum keeps his child appearance, for example, Finn, the blond kid, lider of Loki group, are 40 years old and one of the now four Level 6 of "Loki Familia", but he looks a kid. 5º - When you kill a monster a "Magic Stone" drops, its the monster vitallity, when alive, hit a "Magic Stone" result in a killing blow, but if it is damaged it become useless, and they can't trade then for money. 6º - That one that trained the minotaur was Ottar, Freya's right hand and the only Level 7 7º - Lyu, the blond waitres, is Level 4, actually many of the waitres are Level 4 and the owner, Mama Mia, is a former adventure on Level 6 8º - A lot of people don't know, but there is a side story, that show Ais side of view, it's called "Dungeon ni Deai: Sword Oratoria", and it got an anime addaptation too, but as the main serie it only have one season, but they confirmed the 2º season for the main history and a movie to this year. I'll add to this. 1. As you level you go closer to the level of God's. It's only small but it actually means the higher level you are the slower you age. So level 6s could be fighting when they are 100 and be like a middle age person.

That other strong guys name is Ottaru. He works for the "Freaky" goddess Freya, which is why he was training that Minotaur, just for Bell. The strong guy should be the same level if not more than Ais, but because he's working for the Ms "Steal your Adventurer" goddess, he's not as celebrated in the city as Ais and her familia is.

Just an FYI, Ottar, the boarman who trained the minotaur is the strongest known adventurer (in Orario) at level 7. There are only three (?), if I remember correctly, lvl 7 adventurers in the world.

Bete Loga is probably one of my favourite characters in all of DanMachi, simply because he puts on this air of arrogant superiority around other adventurers. Not because he IS superior, in most cases he is. But just because it keeps others at a distance; he doesn't want other people to like him. I'm unsure if the reason for that is known yet, but that alone hinting at something deeper to his character, and the fact he willingly acknowledges other's growth make him my favourite.

bell was increasing his skills all through the week while aiz was training him. that is what hestia was refering to when she was asking what is this thing. (his fast growth skill) because he was growing extremely fast. he was already close to leveling up prior to fighting the minotaur, but the fight with the minotaur is what pushed him over that threshold.

So the ranking system in Danmachi works like this. You have your Levels starting from the lowest lvl 1, and within each level you have your abilities, agility, dexterity, strength etc, once you maxed your abilities your able to progress to the next lvl where you'd once again attempt to max that lvls ability to move to the next lvl, and the cycle continues

Freya has a special ability to directly seea persons soul. She saw him and became infatuated. She can also claima personssoul after death. So she directed ottar to prepare a challenge to allow him to grow or die she sees it as win win as if he lives and grows she plans on taking him if he diesshe can take him even more easily.

He didn't place the minotaur somewhere to give something special to whoever beats him. He placed it to fight Bell. In the beginning he said to Freya, that some adventurers opened "the package" beforehand or something like that. Someone was too curious and so the minotaur went on a rampage until facing Bell. I also think that the minotaur did it's part to level up Bells abilities to Rank S, but he got far stronger beforehand by training with Aiz and starting to use tactics like martial arts.

Actually Bell's abilities were all S with the exception of Magic which was B and Agility which was SS. His stats were the result of Aiz's endless beating. Riveria only saw what was Bell's open back, she couldn't read Realis Phrase which would have caused a HUGE havoc

I know this was in an earlier episode, but perhaps you've forgotten. Bell has a skill. I cannot remember the name of it, but think of it was a single minded focus. As long as his heart and focus does not change (In this case his wanting to be strong enough to stand next to Ainz) he will level at a hugely abnormal pace. It's not been that long since he started adventuring either if you remember the earlier episodes. He's only been at it 1-2 months now and you can see how vastly he's improved and gotten stronger. And the thing Hestia found that she doesn't understand will be let known to you soon :)

In most games and fantasy related stuff the S rank is the highest one can achieve. There are cases where SS is the highest rank and there are other cases where SSS is an extremely rare rank something like a hidden rank. In this case i believe the S rank is the highest rank which means Bell got there while still being Level 1. The S stands for Super Duper Saiyan. I've read the light novels and this 12 episode adaptation covers first 5 volumes there's currently 12 volumes available in english and god if anyone liked this arc they would go crazy while reading volume 11 last fight such a good series and so glad you're reacting to this. Bell is only level 1 S rank. Minotaur is suppose to be a monster to be fought by level 2 adventurer. Thats why Loki familial is suprise that Bell could fight hand in hand with the minotaur. But the loki familial presence at the scene is all level 5 - 6 adventurers

Somethings the Anime doesn't get into. Mama Mia is semi-retired and formal Captain of Freya's Familia. Ottar (Boaz Race) is the current Captain and is Level 7 (one of two in the World). He's title is the Champion. Fan speculation is that Syr (Gray haried bar maid) is actually Freya. It's hinted at be better explained in the book. Freya is in love with Bell because the color and brilliance of his soul. In heaven, she used this to claim people she took liking to before anyone else. While Bell's is said to be transparent Ais is said to be gold. After you finish this you need to watch Sword Oratoria. That is a side story about Ais. It's time line is a little before Bell's but does over lap.

Peter Parker syr is actually a former/runaway Noble of a very powerful/influential family. this was touched upon in a side story and light novel as well I believe.

@@ethanwilliams4559 Actually, the side story with Ryuu is one of the things that points to her being Freya. She can read people like a God. She plays this off as as just watching people. Ryuu is impressed by Syr's forsight. Syr doesn't have a god's blessing but has been show to manipulate even gods. When Syr first meet Bell this could been what Freya told Loki. He just happened to pass my eye. Also Freya went after Ais for getting close to Bell but nothing about Syr.

Finally Episode 8, been waiting on this reaction, (also explanation spoilers below read at own discretion) The big guy is Ottar, he’s the only Level 7 in the hole city, and is the familia of the Goddess Freya, he was training the minotaur to fight bell to get him over his fear of them, the Minotaur is from level 17 and is normally fought by a group of level 2 adventures, What Hestia was trying to tell bell was his status was up to S and SS rank level, (Ais had just ranked up to level 6 from level 5 by killing a floor boss all by herself -and took 3 years to level up, (9 years total from level 1-6 ) They all where all extremely shocked by him being level 1 taking out a Minotaur by himself and his skills being S rank after only being in the dungeon for a month and 1/2 (6weeks)

Rank system in this anime: I (1-10) > H(1-10) > G(1-10) > F(1-10) > E(1-10) > D(1-10) > C(1-10) > B(1-10) > A(1-10) > S(1-10) > SS(1-10). Some of these ranks may go higher than 10 though. I am not sure. Bell has most of his abilities at S Rank with various numerical values, except 2 stats. Those two are SS ranked.

Freya wants bell. She love the way he looks. She doesn't care whether he lives or dies. If he dies then should could go into the otherworld and take his soul and keep him forever. If he survives then he keeps getting stronger and provides more entertainment for her.

Aiz story is better explained in sword Oratoria but , yes she is going after some one from her past from when she was a little girl living with her mother , and a man whom had sworn to protect them both , then one day both disapeared , and now she wants to be strong enough to be as close to them as posible once again, Also what Aiz notices is not his LVL, for he was a lvl 1 before minotaur but his rapid dungeon advancement , how he almost jump floors of dungeon when she and all other adventurers took years to get were he he is hunting now, minotaur gave Bell multiple S on some ranks

Like in school, A is best for normals, B is below that, etc..., above is is S, SS, SSS. Meaning Super or Superior. S rank people are above human, super human? Some jobs are listed as S rank or higher, so the difficulty is off the charts.

At some point in Japan, S came to mean a grade higher then A and has permeated everywhere, through games I think. It’s not fully known where S came from, but it probably means Special or Super or Superb. If A is Excellent, S would be Master.
