Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

@@elfandenadie2970 En Brasil hay muchos centros de rehabilitación, pero lo de Brasil es infelizmente empeorado por el predomínio del crack en las grandes ciudades: talvez no tanto en las ciudades medias y pequeñas, aún que si exista pero en las grandes hay el fenómeno de las Cracolándias, amplios espacios públicos llenos de usuários, la gran parte de los cuáles mendicantes, además de los próprios traficantes que arregimentan a los niños para ese tipo de trabajo. (En Brasil, el tráfico no es punido con prisión si tu tienes menos de 18). En un cierto sentido, la Cracolándia ya no es tanto un lugar sino una cultura: se se desbaratan los usuarios aquí, logo más ya aprecen centos de ellos allá, y como la cosa se alimenta de la pobreza, claro está que donde hay gente viviendo en la calle, habrá más droga y tráfico que no. Los puntos positivos, relativamente, son que en Brasil aún no llegaran las metanfetaminas, y los programas de rehabilitación son por eso más concentrados en el crack, la cocaína y el álcol, las tres drogas que más daños causan. Hay una eficiéncia mejor quizás.

I am so happy you are free from this. My eyes are filling up as I write this. My brother was an addict. Fortunately, he didn't wind up here because I was able to take him in. God performed a miracle and healed him of all of his addictions. He didn't even go through withdrawal. It was a true miracle because he was taking T, LSD, lots of alcohol and cocaine. I wish you a lot of happiness in life. I am sure you have been through a lot.

This is a prison camp that will go on and on. In my state a fund for millions of dollars allotted for the homeless crisis was returned back to the state because the problem is now so huge city officials are at a loss of where to begin. What kind of help are you going to give them? As an ICU nurse, one of the last drug abuse patients I took care of , had been huffing for years. He couldn’t feed himself, he couldn’t stand or walk and he didn’t recognize his parents, when they came to visit. We where looking for a nursing home to transfer him to. There aren’t enough nursing home beds in the country for all these people. Just the sad truth, so how do we help them? I wish I had an answer.

I ran the streets of Kensington for many years in my addiction and never saw it like this. When did the police throw in the towel and stop arresting people? The park is called Needle Park for obvious reasons but you couldn't sit there for very long before a cop would come around and make you move. And laying around on the avenue itself absolutely would never have happened. Those people are not high from heroin, that much is obvious. It is definitely something cheaper that they are throwing in a bag and calling heroin. I watch these videos to remind myself of what my life would be right now if I hadn't gotten clean. I left Kensington in late 2007 and have been clean ever since but I know that there aren't many people like me who made it out after a 20 year addiction. Watching this makes me even more aware of that. I pray that some of these folks can get out someday but this is even beyond my nightmares. Sadly these videos are probably watched by parents who are trying to find their children. I don't wish this nightmare on my worst enemy.

This problem is growing in many countries, sadly. In Frankfurt we now have streets where it looks similar to this. I was shocked. Some say, this is not a problem in China and other Asian countries but this is also untrue. In China and Korea you also have streets that look like this. People are desperate and drug abuse spreads because it's like an infection... Parents and neighbours use drugs, you grow up like this and your chance of becoming an addict rises...
