Alright everyone. I've now completed followed the tutorial and want to make a comment of a bunch of things I wish I knew before I started. Also to answer a lot of the questions I see asked on here a lot. FAQ + some personal tips as someone who has completed the project. If you have any questions, I'm on KZbin a lot, and I hope I can come back to this thread to help out anyone trying this on their own. First off, thank AzureBlaze for an amazingly detailed tutorial. Please stop asking her to just sell it. She has already explained that she has no interest in selling it due to the time it takes to create. She went through the effort of a big and very detailed tutorial that shows you EXACTLY how to make it all by yourself. It costs about $40-$50 (USD) to buy the materials alone. Including the amount of effort and time and skill it takes to do it right, I wouldn't do it again for any less than $350-$400. It's honestly quite the learning experience too when you make it on your own, I learned a lot about patience and continuing to move on despite making what seemed like catastrophic errors, which were ultimately non-consequential. I encourage you to go on your own journey and complete this for yourself, if you have any interest in it. 90% of the materials I was able to purchase at Michaels, which is an arts and crafts store in New England. The last few bits like nails and a binder clip and hairbands I found at Wal-Mart. When you purchase the floss, you need 32 total strands of it. 8 of each color, you'll need the full length wrapped around each wooden pin. It really does only take about 3.5m like she says in the tutorial, but you want that extra for any mistakes, trust me. 38 small nails, 32 wooden pins (or doll pins), a ruler, a binder clip, rubber bands / hair bands. That was my shopping list. Do NOT separate the embroidery floss. Wrap the entire string around the wodden pins, if it separates it becomes too thin to work with and falls apart easily. The little clip used to secure it after she wraps it around her wrist is called a suspender clip, when I bought one, it's a little small for the big bracelet, so it kinda just clamps them together, I may buy a bigger one so the "teeth" of the clip dont "bite" into the braided cord. It takes a very long time. It took me about 10 hours just to wrap all the threads around the clips, and get it all lined up clipped and organized. 30 - 40 hours to actually do all the threads, and that's with really getting into a groove and going pretty quickly. I didn't create the jig, so what I did was use the big binder clip on top secured to the back of my monitor stand with some hairbands. You want this to be study and not bouncy or have any give, if you can help it. I just nailed all the nails straight into my desk, because I don't care for it. On that note, make sure you have the room for this thing. Because it is a long project, it is going to sit there for a very long time. It also takes up more space than you'd expect. If it's even remotely in the way, like mine was, it will start to be very annoying and you may even start rushing it just to get it out of the way. If you have a cat, cover the whole thing with an old t shirt or towel you don't care about anymore. My cat loved the little dangly bits, and the only way I could get her to ignore it was out of sight out of mind. Never ever EVER neglect the knocking. It's VERY IMPORTANT YOU DO THIS EVERY LINE (including that beginning segment! You can see in the video she even says it is malformed because she neglected knocking). If you don't it will look loose or start the slanting problem that some people seem to be complaining about. at some point you will notice it being very tight, this is COMPLETELY NORMAL if you've been knocking the whole time. You're tying a very tight knot, and then tightening it even more each time you knock. It may look a little warped, or like it's curving in the middle. This is VERY NORMAL if you've been KNOCKING EACH LINE. Just keep on going on. When it's done, you can put some heavy books on it overnight, or dip it in water and stretch it by putting heavy books on each end and making sure its tight and taught. Imagine working a very large dollar bill to put into a vending machine. Just have to straighten it out. Be careful though! The embroidery floss is sensitive and light material. When you get to the confusing middle part, make sure to TAKE YOUR TIME. As it's easily the most convoluted part of the design, it can be VERY EASY to mess up at this point. I was talking to a friend when I did it very late and night, and while I didn't butcher it, I definitely put in an extra red or two that should've been white. I recommend having your full attention when doing this part, pause your podcast or wait until you have some alone time and can really focus on it. The excel spreadsheet is exactly how you need to follow it. 1 cell = 1 knot. For the Red / orange bit at the beginning and end, do 16cm of each. If you want my recommendation, after you get all the floss bundled up the way she does in the starting bit, That is when you should START counting towards your 16cm of red. You'll see the bundling gives you about 1-2cm of length, but honestly, it just looks a little short in the end product if you count that. start the bundle, do 16cm, THEN do the slanted design. Same for orange, AFTER THE SLANT, start counting towards another 16cm of orange. Then do the middle design part, then do it all again. Basically what I'm saying is, don't count the starting or ending bit, and don't count the slants for "length". I did it so I could cheat a little and get it done just a little quicker, and I paid the price. Again it looks totally fine, but I do wish I did it the way I just described. The proportions would've just felt a bit more perfect. IF YOUR FLOSS BEGINS TO SEPERATE SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PROJECT DO NOT WORRY! There's a very easy fix I found in a forum. you'll notice working with split floss is very frustrating and messy and can start the alter how the braided cord looks. To avoid this, I recommend finding the floss that is splitting, cutting it off as close as you can to the braid without damaging anything else, and then cutting off any split part ( pull out some string from the pin until it's whole again). Then, take the new whole string, and feed it BEHIND the braid and up into the clip again, and place it back between the nails where it belonged. Then continue to braid as normal. Because this is so tight, after about 5-10 more rows you shouldn't feel it having any slack or like you can "pull it out" of the design. Then once you are complete, and you cut off any extra string dangling from the back via a nail clipper or other super precise cutting. This is everything I can think of mentioning right now. Again if you have any questions I will try my best to answer them no matter how old this comment is. Looking at you person needing answers in 4 years.

@@liayaaa do you mean the very beginning bundle part? She goes over it, but basically you have to look at the little green lines in the excel sheet. She starts with wrapping red fully around the entire bundle twice. Then, bundle of 1, bundle of 7. After that, bundle of 7, bundle of 1. 1-6-1 X2 1-1-5-1 And so forth Each time you make a bundle move all reds to the next left peg. If you mean how many reds after that segment, you'll just have to keep going until you can measure out 16cm of red with your ruler.

When I was making this as a surprise gift for my brother (who introduced me to the movie and is now both our favourite movies) I was using my art easel and hair pins and sticky tape as a makeshift frame but every time my brother (his room is right next to mine) would come into my room I’d have to shove my easel into my crowded closet and then when I’d take it out I’d have to restick all the pins that fell off bc the sticky tape wasn’t that sticky😂😂 this was A LOT of work but I’m glad I got to make it for him *THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL*

This is such a great tutorial! I'm a huge fan of Kimi no na wa and so I thought of making the hairband myself, as I like to craft things as a hobby. After looking at some other videos that didn't satisfy me I found this one. My first thought was: "This is way too complicated for me. I better search for something easier". But your kumihimo is by far the most detailed one and has the best tutorial for it. I watched this video over and over again and each time it got easier in my head to do it. At some point I was like "It sure isn't easy, but I think I can do it". So I started collecting all the things I needed, which is a huge task itself, as I live in a small town. With the help of my father I made the wooden frame and I even got the exact wooden pins that you used! With your detailed instructions and the pattern you made it was very clear what to do. From collecting the parts to the finished product I think it took me at least a month, maybe two or three (I don't really remember). I'm really satisfied with my kumihimo, although in the middle part it is a little wider than the rest, and overall it's not quite straight (but if you wear it as a bracelet it doesn't show). I often wear it as a bracelet and it's such a great feeling to know that I made it myself and that I invested a lot of time and work in it. Thank you so much for this tutorial!

For anyone asking: I think the clasp that they're using to secure the bracelet comes from a harness (the kind that you use to hold your pants up)! You can probably go get in a textile shop or a shop of that calibre, or just buy a cheap harness and cut it off!

Hi! First of all great job on the video and making this kumihimo. I'm making one right now and currently at 14 cm and I just have a few questions.. 1. It's sorta more stiff than I imagined (the 14 cm can be straightened and it won't fall). I mean it won't be when it's longer but is this normal? or am I tightening it too much? and if ever. any tips to make it more soft? 2. It's sorta bending towards the right side and not really straight. I mean it's not noticeable but I'm just afraid that I'm doing something wrong. 3. Is the wooden pins suppose to be a bit heavy to pull the cords downward? I couldn't find any and used cardboard as a replacement. Again. Just wondering if this will affect the kumihimo in the long run. Will be waiting for your reply. Please and thank you :)

1.Once you finished it you can soften it up a bit by soaking it in water to release the tension. It also take some time to "wear" it down to become softer. 2.It is normal. Wrap it around a pole, apply tension and soak it should correct the shape more or less. 3.Using something that has more weight might be better, but right tools are hard to come by so I just use light stuffs I can find.

Hey, I am making this bracelet and i have a Problem. The row i knot are diagonal. So that the right end of the row is much lower than the beginning. I tried fixing it with neglecting the hammering for half of the row but still its diagonal. Please give my a hint how i can change it that would be really nice.

It's a suspender clip. You should be able to find it in some sewing/craft supplies shop. I used regular cotton embroidery floss on this and it's good enough for me.
