It's the tires too. He didn't have to sit as long in the grid as other drivers and he did great job keeping temperatures just right. That gave him the advantage to be able to drive as well as he did. Of course his skills and experience are undeniable too, nothing away from Kimi. But the tires are just SO tricky to keep at the exact right temperature to work and that's something Pirelli needs to fix. Basically, Kimi was one of the only drivers able to do that, and also because he didn't have to sit on the grid so long.

I've been watching F1 since I can remember. I have the complete races from the late 70's to this day. All of them. I have books and lots of footage from the early days. This is quite arguably one of the best first laps of any driver in the whole F1 history considering KR was driving such a poor car. I can remember Senna's first lap at Donington in 1993 and I always remember the start of the Dutch GP in 1983 when Eddie Cheever jump from P11 to P2 right at the first corner of the old Zandvoort circuit. Eddie was driving the Renault. This first lap from Kimi stands up very well among the ones I just mentioned before. And also Jean Alesi's first lap at the French GP in 1989 wich was his F1 debut btw. Amazing stuff. Edit: The most amazing thing of this first lap by KR is that when he reached sixth place, Bottas and Sainz could already be seen at the front. That is absolutely amazing.
@Adrian-kb9uw

Tremendo comentario, Ernesto!!!! You justified all what I said and I agree with you that this lap is one of the best not only for the overtaking, but also for the car Kimi was driving. We all know that this year Alfa Romeo is among the three worst cars on the grid.

@@johncale1849 Button had no grip advantage , true but from what i remember something like 4 of the cars he passed went off the track via fighting with each other or picking up damage. Not to mention the 2016 McLaren was a genuine midfield car. The Alfa, on softer tyres or not was a shitbox. Very impressive examples of opening laps for both of them though, these are the moments that show why they're world champions.

That's what thirty years of experience looks like on an even playing field. "Räikkönen was born in Espoo, Finland. He had a long line of success in karting from the age of 10. His first race outside Finland was in Monaco when he was 15 years old. During the race, the steering wheel broke, but he continued, informing his mechanic by frantically waving the steering wheel in the air on the home straight. Räikkönen's next Monaco race was also memorable; he was thrown on the wrong side of the safety fence in a first lap collision but continued driving until running out of road. Undeterred, he lifted his kart back onto the track and continued to race. His mechanic thought Räikkönen had retired, but he eventually caught up with the other competitors and finished third."

Also his racing/defending against Sainz is another fine example....Kimi shows time and again how to race cleanly while also being tough. F1 is gonna lose so much when he retires. In Beyond the Grid Vettel talks about Kimi being the biggest natural talent in racing, and his ability able to adapt to anything quickly. I think this race shows that, first time this track has been in F1, no driver on the grid had raced an F1 car on this track until that weekend. Sure you get some practice sessions/qualifying to get used to the track but I don’t think that will prepare you for a start and lap 1 amongst 19 other cars. Yet Kimi just shows how instinctive he could be, effortlessly overtaking so many (better) cars.
