What was your opinion on Montoya across the 05 season? And what was his problem with the car? I’ve seen a few interviews with him complaining about it but always ended with “but the car is quick”. Would love to hear your thoughts!

@@christiansimmons630 He was fine with it by the end of the season andin 2006 he liked the car. He just had some issues adapting and was up against the fastest driver in the sport so he looked poor. Overall if you discount his shoulder injury it was ok. He was under a lot of pressure too since rumours of Lewis were growing in 2006.

@@ciaronsmith4995 yeah i think Germany didn’t help, spinning out in the last corner of qualifying, considering kimi retired he almost certainly cost himself victory. But it was a great race to demonstrate how fast the mp4-20 was He was certainly quick but clearly not as consistent across 05 as you would expect. He his problems with back markers was bizarre (in my view he was just being too impatient). For me 05 was just okay for Montoya.

The switch between the two Mclaren drivers and the reaction of Allen/Brundle is fascinating. Even with Austria 01 and 02 fresh in the collective memory, there is already an admission that team orders are just part of the sport and cannot be wished away. A good clip to have in pocket for newer fans who complain that team orders shouldn’t exist. A shame that it took the rest of the decade until the rulebook caught up again!

For those wondering what happened after the clip stops. Webber does indeed set fastest lap on those dry tyres (and worked his way back up to 4th) but Alonso doesn't pit. Montoya crashes due to a collision with Pizzonia (crash clip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5bRao2re6qdi7M) . Final podium is Kimi (Mclaren), Alonso (Renault), Button (BAR Honda). Then from 4th Webber (Williams), 5th Barrichello (Ferrari), 6th Villeneuve (Sauber), 7th Ralf Schumacher (Toyota, also got fastest lap on penultimate lap), 8th Tiagro Monteiro (Jordan), 9th Christian Klein (Redbull), and 10th Felipe Massa (Sauber). Notable DNF's were David Coulthard (Redbull) on lap 18, and Michael Schumacher (Ferrari) on lap 13 taken out by Takuma Sato (see crash clip here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaepq2xoorebZpY)

@@ciaronsmith4995 Well..It is your opinion but you're totally wrong. first. That was planned by team and with Montoya from the beginning because of Kimi's position in the championship, so he Montoya slowed down during the race to help his teammate before he was hit by Pizzonia... second. you know there's no point in saying that "Montoya had the habit to cost points for the team" due to backmarkers mistakes? C'mon man.

@@javiergarrido6088 Montoya went out last, with likely less fuel as usual (SC made it impossible to know) and Kimi knew he didn't have to take a risk on his quali lap since it was pre-determined Kimi would win the race. So as much as you're saying Montoya didn't push, neither did Kimi. Kimi would have been driving in a completely different fashion if that was a title-deciding race against his teammate. Both drivers knew what was expected. All we know is that Montoya had a faster car than Kimi in 2004 Spa, and lost and that Kimi's fastest lap in Spa 2005 was way quicker than that of Montoya who crashed out.

I've seen you many times say that Alonso has a low mid speed corner which is not even comparable to Kimi's speed, so why he has been so competitive at his peak (obviously not as competitive as Kimi but on the top of the last 2 decades)? And another question: do you think that Alonso's driving style could be combined in some way with Kimi's driving style despite Alonso prefers an understeer package and is a bit late breaker than Kimi?
@ciaronsmith4995
@ciaronsmith4995 2 жыл бұрын
Kimi is trying to carry speed through; that is high risk. I think Alonso carries good mid corner speed but not as much as Kimi, for example. Alonso prioritizes the exit of the corner. Kimi carries massive amounts of mid corner speed too, but prioritizes corner entry. That's why Alonso is fine with understeer on entry, it's setting him up for an incredible exit, while Kimi is not fine with corner entry understeer, as he wants to get the car into the corner as quickly as possible and maintain that speed past the apex, even if it compromises his exit slightly. Yes, I am sure you could combine the two driving styles, you would have to be a driver that has aggressive inputs, with amazing car control. Would be hard to combine it with super late braking. Rare to find. Would probably have to still be someone that turns in very early and brakes earlier too.
@abdbcdgbja5733
@abdbcdgbja5733 2 жыл бұрын
His driving style is so agressive that it rotates the car really well lending itself to good exits. Alonso's advantage is that his driving style is very adaptable. It's not the fastest and has never been, but he can drive anything and everywhere with competitve speed combined with his car control. Non of the greats from the last 40 years have the adaptability matching alonso's except for senna. Not Hamilton, not schumacher, not prost, not vettel, not kimi. It's yet to be seen with Max. Kimi and fernandos driving style are almost contrary to each other. Alonso bullies the car like if it was a bull while kimi just goes with the flow. Alonso's generates understeer while kimi needs oversteer, and one of the keys to kimis driving is the early braking to unlock the great apex speed.
@dreadalex
@dreadalex 2 жыл бұрын
@@abdbcdgbja5733 Well when Kimi asked which was his favourite car layout he said 4WD. He needed front wheel grip so as to be faster and more precise in corners. It's not like he compromises his exits, Alonso for instance likes to have traction on the exit, he is not all that pointy to the apex like Kimi. The Renaults of 2005-2006 were also very good on the front end, till mid season 2006 Alonso was running a front wing which according to Ferrari was illegal and gave Alonso immense front end grip. You can only spot the differences if both them were driving a Mitsubishi Evo. But Kimi would be faster.

Despite Raikkonen only finishing less than half the race or starting from the back due to mechanical failures? 4. 2005 did not belong to Alonso so -It was the worst reliability period in F1 for Mclaren. 5.How many times did other drivers have their team mates crash into the wall so he could get advantage. 6. How many drivers blackmailed their boss for unconditional no1. 7. How many drivers got matched/beaten by a rookie. 8.How many drivers finished demanded all the best mechanics in a team and demanded unconditional no1- Yet only finished 6th and beat on their chest about how great they are. 9. How many driver could not overtake a 7th Place Renault whilst in one of the fastest cars on the grid & lost a championship as a result. 10.How many drivers drove for Ferrari and Renault - two factory works teams. But failed to win at Ferrari for 5 years. Even in the 9th car on the grid and retiring Raikkonen showed far better speed than that BS artist in a works Alpine.

@@theelf152 the easiest way to compare drivers is when they drive in the same team.. and Kimi’s performance in 2014 looked as bad as your face…

Montoya: The worst teamate in F1 history. I haven't done the maths of Kimi's lost points due to Montoya in 2005 because i'm still afraid of the result . . .

@@ciaronsmith4995 saying that montoya was a jealous driver is unfair, the guy never crashed anybody on purpose, like schumacher did more than once. I'd say he is just very very competitive and a very aggressive driver
