Kimi Werner meets up with Megan Godinez to learn how to throw net, a traditional Hawaiian practice of gathering food taught to her by her father. Pounding surf, sharp lava rocks and the pressure of catching dinner are some of the challenges faced in efforts to catch little fry fish to bring home for dinner. But it's the lessons learned through this practice of patience, persistence and timing and learning to walk the line between two worlds of ocean and land that make this a very special tradition worth sharing. Mahalo to OluKai for supporting us telling these stories.

Fried Whole Fish with Chili Pepper Water:
Clean fish by removing scales and guts. Rinse and pat dry. Score each side of fish with knife and season with salt and black pepper. Pan fry in medium hot oil, until golden brown on each side. Serve with chili pepper water.
Chili Pepper Water:
5 fresh Hawaiian chilis smashed, minced or ground up (can substitute for other spicy peppers, like (1) habanero, (2) jalapeño, etc)
2 cloves of garlic, smashed, or minced
Add vinegar, shoyu and water to taste, based on your own love for salty/tangy balance.

This was so homestyle, it just brings me back to to da day! I'm a Tutu now and feel so blessed to have been raised Hawaiian style by my Daddy. Kanikapila on the weekends, dancing hula for the family, climbing on the roof to get the dryed fish, truly heaven on earth! Mahalo and Aloha from Maui!

We're winning just that they even share this life style with the world. I personally have never made the same chili pepper water twice, I think it's a very adaptable recipe and performs well with experiments. Little bit of worsteshire, fish sauce, soy sauce, along with ginger, garlic, rosemary was the recipe that got the most hits from friends saying best chili water ever.

That’s a great skill right there ladies but I think something is missing with your cast net which is a rope that holds your net after you cast it so you don’t have to chase it and also have a control after you throw it in the water.

Had to laugh at the; "Don' trow Molokai." _(And, I was waiting for you... to throw Molokai.)_ I could just see it flying that way. And I would have laughed even more, if you had, and then; caught the most fish. Ps. Ever tried fried Kole with a sauce made from; Shoyu, Molokai Kiawe honey, garlic, and Hawaiian peppers? _(Good with Karaage too.)_ Pps: Molokai has some *really good* net fishermen. So, there's two kine _"trow Molokai."_

I love how you ladies mentioned how your father taught both of you how to hunt for your meal. That's what's missing with today's children. Fathers are not there to teach the children how to be good adults. Women, please choose good men to procreate with. You ladies get to breed the next generation of humans. On a different note, deep fried fish is one of my favorites, but be aware of the oil you use to deep fry those fish. Seeded oil or vegetable oil is extremely dangerous to our health. Use an Air Fryer, it's so much healthier to enjoy those delicious fish.
