The plunger travels up to the surface because of the pressure differential between downhole pressure and the surface equipment. When the control valve on the flow line closes and the plunger falls, downhole pressure will begin to build to a sufficient level to bring the plunger along with any fluid to the surface when the flow line control valve opens. Producers can lower the operating pressure of the separation equipment or inject natural gas (gas lift) into the well to increase the pressure differential.
