Gotta love the spalted wood. I have tons of it - mainly Silver Maple. Also, extremely punky. I'm glad I've kept it lying around long enough to learn, from you, that it CAN be used. I haven't gotten there, yet, but the idea of adding acetone to the resin (Half-AC Resin?) for soaking in will be taken advantage of. I also, just today, got wind of a (new?) product from Total Boat. Penetrating Resin, they call it.
@perrys59542 ай бұрын
I have been struggling with some beautifully spalted birch I happened upon and had been pretty heartbroken in how challenging the punky areas have turned out. Tried a number of treatments and nothing seemed to work all that well. Feel a little bit of a fool for not thinking of using thinned epoxy! haha so thank you for that (I am a bit of a newbie lol). Really appreciated your video and explanations. The bowl turned out absolutely beautiful, great job!!!
@KimTippin2 ай бұрын
so glad the video helped! I am working on a very punky worm hole filled birch bowl now. I have been working on it holes weeks. I feel your pain. I am using penetrating epoxy from Total Boat. But 2:1 formula thinned with acetone works just the same. It works wonders on wood that would otherwise be firewood. Thank you so much for watching 🤗
@perrys59542 ай бұрын
@@KimTippin Thanks for the added detail. I've tried "PC Petrifier" and and even just sanding sealer hoping it would stiffen the gains more (which id did to some effect..) as well as a few others but feel I need to do more testing to be sure what is working best. I know there are specifically designed solutions (such as ones actually called "Wood Hardner", but the key for me is finding inexpensive solutions! I'd initially dismissed resin as a solution out of habit with everything resin related being expensive I'm trying to save epoxy resin use. Painting on a thinned solution of it is the ultimate way of making it go the farthest for you so I am all for giving that method a go. Is a 'penetrating epoxy' just one that is naturally much thinner? Or does it have some other beneficial properties? Hope ultimately its just the thinned 'watery' viscosity resin that really matters so that I can use some of the resin's I alread have on hand rather than ordering another product :p I suppose a little controlled test with various brands may be justified at this point :)

Something that has been working for me, at least on smaller pieces is shellac based sanding sealer to harden really pinky stuff. I have a birch tree that was cut down about 3 yrs ago and has been sitting out in the weather. I take my blanks, place them in a container and soak them in the sanding sealer, usually overnight. Once they have dried the wood fibers are nicely hardened and they turn beautifully.

Kewl Spalting... BTW, I'm using Kitty Litter with silica to dry my bowls in . A week in that stuff, and your usually good to go. After your done. Lay the litter out on a cookie sheet, and blow dry it, to remove the moisture it's taken on. Bag it back up, and reuse. I've had some good luck with that process and semi-wet wood. I haven't tried the DNA method yet, but it's the next one I want to try.

Wonderful color and grain, very nicely done, Kim. When you talk about the drying and humidity issues, it's like another world to us up here is Eastern Washington State. We are not part of the rain forest climate nor a rainy climate on this side of the Cascade Mountain range. We get an average of about 8" a year and though we can get around 2' of snow during a winter, the air is a high desert climate most of the time. Wood can dry quickly even in the winter. Love your turning creativity and pursuit of knowledge. Thank you for the videos. Blessings.

Sycamore, cottonwood, is a funky wood. It grows along creek banks and tends to rot quickly if cut down. It also is a prime host for poison ivy vines. You did a great job unless you stabilize it but you would need a big vessel chamber indeed.
