Silly suggestion time: Perhaps you could raise the emotional intensity of this song by introducing one or more rap segments. I'm thinking of a guy rapping, medium speed serious/saddish, echoing the song lyrics, mostly in between the singing, but with perhaps a little bit of overlap here and there. It would absolutely have to be someone who knows properly how to do that kind of rap. There's already two things going on when Kina and Marie sing different parts. If that part of the song came in on the end of a rap segment, then you'd have three things, with the contrast between them making the whole thing more intense.
