I think Mike was right about the vote-by-committee aspect of "we already have two from this franchise on this list." Zelda taking up 6% of this list, while IMO not a horrible choice, would have taken spots away from other games that also should be recognized. And I guessss there's an argument that Ocarina doesn't stand the test of time (heh) but that's a stretch for sure.

I didn't mind this list at all, but personally would have moved A Link to the Past, Elden Ring, and Symphony of my Night up into the top 20 for sure. As for omissions, Dark Souls, Portal 2, and Super Mario 64 feel like they deserve placement in the top 50 without a doubt. And although the industry itself would not exist as it does today without Super Mario Bros on NES, factoring in how well the games on the list hold up today, I can respect the choice of Super Mario World instead.

@@AREAlhero I didnt say anything about it being impactful, I said it is one of the best games ever made. Being impactful and being good dont go hand in hand. Somtimes they do, like Dark Souls, but you also also get plenty of games that are amazing but dont really have much impact on gaming as a whole. For example last year there was an amazing indie game called The Last Faith, but it went completely under the radar and no one played it, despite the fact that it was one of the best games of the year.

Which is one of the most easily proven blatantly wrong things given Super Mario 64 is among the top 5 most impactful and influential games ever. Best games are often impactful, but it is not always. Plus it didn't help that it released last year, where there were several games that dominated the conversation and stole all the oxygen out of the room.

The games I’m surprised aren’t on the list are; - Among Us - Gran Turismo 3 - FIFA 10 or 11 - Overwatch Among Us was the game of the pandemic above Animal Crossing and people who I’d never heard talk about or play games were playing it. If stats can be believed it had 500m players in November 2020 Gran Turismo 3 alongside FF7 basically secured the PS2 generation until GTA San Andreas. I remember people playing Gran Turismo 3 and wondering if it was possible for graphics to actually get better than that games graphics. FIFA 10/11 and the introduction of Ultimate Team changed the entire gaming industry once they found out how to get kids to pay $5 and now $20 a pack for virtual cards. Overwatch popularised an entire genre and is still in the top 10 highest selling games of all time. Also I don’t like the game but it’s funny I haven’t seen anybody say Silent Hill 2

Incorrect on all levels. There are only a few indie platformers with impact at all (biggest of those is Super Meat Boy), and Celeste is far and away better than every single one of those by several degrees of magnitude. Celeste was an indie team making a 2D platformer at the same level as the kings of the genre (Nintendo) and doing so in an entirely different way from a game design perspective. All that while having a wonderful story and some of the most beautiful pixel art to ever grace a monitor. Celeste is a better game than any other game in 2018

Man, I think I played shadow of the colossus 20 years too late. I played the remastered version a few months glago and absolutely hated the game. One of the clunkiest controlling games I’ve ever experienced (don’t get me started on the horse), and the gameplay revolves around how do I get on the boss’s fury parts. Oh wow. Some games age like fine wine and some age like a lunchable left in the sun for 20 years.

A best games of all time list is always going to be difficult to balance, because you need to consider influence, impact and how well the game holds up to play - so I appreciate Rolling Stones trying to heavily consider games that have all 3. That said they seem to have ignored that aspect in some entries. Link to the Past is way too low and ticks all 3 boxes. Conversely Tony Hawk Pro Skater is way too high (that game doesnt hold up that well). I think Portal & Bioshock are glaring misses. I do appreciate the complete ignorance to Ocarina. That game was really influential but holds up horribly and is extremely hard to recommend to someone that does not have rose tinted nostalgia.

I feel like Dark Souls, EverQuest, and StarCraft are insane to not have on the list. I know you have Elden Ring, but you don't have Elden Ring without Dark Souls (you could make an argument for Demons Souls aswell, but Dark Souls is what really kicked off an entire new genre and it holds up far better than Demons Souls). Without EverQuest, you don't have the MMO genre as we know it - certainly not things like World of Warcraft. StarCraft needs to be there to represent RTS games, and just what it did in South Korea is enough to get on the list imo. I'd also put Among Us for popularizing social deduction games.

I actually love Fortnite but the reason its so notable right now is solely based on the collabs and most games these days have collabs. The User Generated content is most garbo, the extra "games" they put into Fortnite have mostly been duds. 45 is a good place for it.
