I almost had the reverse experience of what you describe! I started my oldest son with Singapore and he has thrived in it for years. When it was time for my daughter to start learning math, it didn't even occur to me that I should look into other curriculum options for her. She's left-handed and very artistic, always in her imaginary world creating things. This last year has been a nightmare with Singapore Dimensions. Over the course of the year, I realized that she's very much a kinesthetic learner. I used the Simply Charlotte Mason Delightful Reading with her and being able to move the letter tiles around helped her SO much. I think I'm going to try RightStart with her this coming year, even though it's teacher intensive, it will be worth it in the long run if she's able to understand math in a way that makes sense to her. Thank you for your extensive review! I wasn't looking at Math-U-See, but now that I've seen your overview I might look into the Primer for my son going into Kindergarten. I can tell he already has a grasp of math, he loves his skip counting songs, and it would be a huge help if he can watch someone explain the lesson and do a lot of it on his own. Thank you so much!

L L I’m so glad the review was helpful! This is a great example of why I think homeschooling is such a great option! Every kid is so unique- you should definitely try RS, it is a beautiful program that teaching math in ways that really help kids understand at a deeper level! I’m going to try Singapore with my daughter this year for kindergarten but I have definitely learned to hold it loosely and if we need to switch to something different for her, that is totally fine!!

Thank you so much for this review. By far the most thorough video I’ve seen on the subject. This is my first year homeschooling with my youngest who is 5. I have two children in high school that went to public school since pre school, however with the issues in the world at the moment I don’t feel comfortable sending my youngest to school with a mask and stuff. Anyways, I’m super overwhelmed and this was extremely helpful.

I have used Math-U-See for my oldest from Primer - Algebra 1. I would say my son never loved it but he has progressed steadily with it. I am considering Singapore Dimensions for my Kindergartener & Preschooler as a chance to try something new. I also think she needs something more visually engaging. However, I see it tops out at 8th grade. I am hoping you or another commenter can tell me what people commonly switch to for high school without any struggle of gaps in understanding or teaching style? Thanks! Also, thank you for the video. It was well planned out and covered good info. 💛

Lisa Folkerts Hi! From my understanding, they are really pretty similar. Since filming this video I have discovered that Dimensions is intended more for the classroom (large group game ideas, etc) but can still be used easily for homeschooling. I’m actually considering using primary math for my 1st grader next year. It looks very similar but might be a little more straight forward for school at home 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was looking between a comparison on RS and MUS because I had in mind that Singapore was too strict, but after your video..I am not longer sure. Hi Angie! Thank you for this comparison video! I find it to be especially helpful because we are leaning towards starting homeschool for this school year. I'm interested in Singapore math for my first grader. He is a lot like your son & wants to do the math in his head! I appreciate the way you observed what works best for your child, that's helping me navigate through this uncharted territory. I'm torn between Dimensions and Primary. Reading some of the previous comments, did you decide between dimensions and primary for the upcoming school year? If so, what factors led you to that choice? Do you know how the two programs differ? Thank you again for super helpful review!

Josephine Dipasupil Hi! I’m glad the video was helpful! I decided to try Primary with my son for 1st grade. I ended up making that decision because we weren’t really using all the extra small or large group activities (that are geared more towards in classroom). Also Primary is designed for homeschool 🤷🏼‍♀️. So I’m going to try it and if we don’t like it I will be switching back!

Thank you for this video. I am also needing to decide on kinder curriculum for my daughter. She has intellectual disabilities though I personally love math and wanted to presume competence and teach her as much as I can. (We've already taught her to read a bit, to others' surprise!) I am struggling choosing among Dimensions Math, RSM, Singapore Primary Math 2022, and Math with Confidence. I wanted to stick with something common core since we are in CA. I like RSM, but am concerned about the use of abacus (my daughter has really poor fine motor skills). I like Dimensions Math, but wish they have a home instructors guide. I am also concerned that singapore math generally has more expectation of worksheets even at K level as compared to RSM level A. What would you recommend if you are in my shoe?
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 3 жыл бұрын
That is a really hard decision ... as for Singapore worksheets, the sheets in the textbook you will do together ... and honestly we often did the workbook sheets together as well. The new primary math looks great, but I haven't used it so I can't say. RS does have a lot of moving parts which can be a bit tough ... but it is great for kids that struggle!

Thanks so much for this video! I looked at the placement tests for dimensions, and I'm pretty sure my son should be starting with the KB level, so I'd rather not purchase both KA and KB. Do you think KB alone would be enough to cover a full school year, if we do about 3-4 lessons per week, or is it meant to be KA for 1/2 year and KB for the second 1/2? Just want to get an idea of how much material is included in KB and whether it will last us Aug-May? Thanks again!

We're using Singapore Dimensions also for our 6yo/1st grader. We started with KB and are watching Wisdom Wonder Project math videos. Because they use the Primary curriculum, the videos are showing us different imagery, but it's all the same concepts. Once we get through this book (and we're almost done!), I'm going to switch over to Primary so our book matches the videos. But so far, we're loving the curriculum - the use of manipulatives, games and workbook. I may have started my kid one half year behind, but I wasn't exactly sure where he was after the mess crisis learning was last spring in Kindergarten.

Hi! I used Wisdom Wonder math videos for most of 1st grade. We homeschooled thanks to the pandemic, but in March our 1st grader was really missing having more interactions with kids outside our family. (Moving to a new town during a pandemic is pretty tough.) So we enrolled him in the public school at that time. But for the 6 months we used it, we loved it! My kiddos really liked Ms. Houser and we all loved the use of manipulatives. My 4yo would watch the videos with her brother and she was learning along with him! When my 1st grader re-entered school, he was behind in reading (which I expected), but totally up to speed or even ahead in math. Also, the company is super responsive if you have questions or suggestions. They always responded quickly to my emails and I felt like we almost had a working partnership. I highly recommend WWP! www.wisdomwonderproject.org/ref/emmybeu@gmail.com/

Hi! Can you share a link for the bins you use to store the right start math manipulatives? We've been using Horizons math (which doesn't have the beautiful teacher's manual like Singapore). My oldest daughter (5.5) likes worksheets but I feel like she isn't absorbing enough. Singapore would be easiest for me to teach, however I think the hands on right start MAY be easier for her to absorb. I would appreciate any feedback. I feel like i'm taking a HUGE risk spending so much on rightstart, but I want her to start enjoying math and learning more than how to trace two digit numbers. Thank you for your help, and for the link to the bins!

thank you we are new to homeschooling. and really going through a tough time with not much help from our es. i have 2 kiddos on the spectrum both struggling now i struggling with them first at a school now with a public charter. kids like to interact with me, and I do too. they like hands on with little downtime. my husband is also battling kidney cancer since i am the caregiver of everything for everyone, i also need less reading and preparing for me to get a lesson. I get allot of "aaww sorry but no real help" allot of opinions and links. which makes it hard because i think i am dyslexic, with no time to self care myself at all hence i have to pull allnighters when my toddler has sleep disturbances in order to research links. we like all about reading and moving beyond the page. but the downtime for me to figure out steps through pages of text is difficult because son is already eloping before we start. son is showing lots of interest for iready, abc mouse and online moving beyond the page but when it challenges him he struggles to move to the next level. Im in search of kinder and 1st grade; math measurement data geometry, spelling, writing, staying on topic, counting by 2,3,5 and 10's for my autistic kiddo kind who struggles with eloping/task avoidance and speech impairment. please help i run into allot of recommendations that either dont work or work but are not our charter vendor

I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling so much, that must seem overwhelming! It sounds like you need something more open and go ... in other words, not much planning for you! It sounds like you have a charter? Does it allow for religious curriculum, because Abeka is really solid and also has a DVD or streaming option ... that would take all the teaching off of your plate. Although, it can be expensive. I also know of some programs through the school systems ... I think it is called K12!

hi what is mental math spiral and mastery math?
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Mental math is the ability to do math in your head ... which some curriculums teach strategies for that. A spiral approach to math is where the topics are introduced but then something new is brought in and the concepts just keep spiraling in to give more practice while new concepts are always taught. As for mastery, the concept is taught exclusively until fully grasped prior to moving on. Hope that makes sense!

what is the difference between dimensions and primary other than its an updated version? Anything major?
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I would say the main difference is that Dimensions is geared towards a classroom (group activities and classroom manipulatives) and primary is geared towards homeschooling. I haven't started primary with my son yet, so I can't say any more than that ... but I think otherwise they are very similar in scope and sequence and general teaching strategy!

@@sciencemama My mom used Miquon Math (it is a 1st to 3rd grade program that uses Cusinaire Rods) and I loved learning with this. It had a focus on manipulatives and discovering multiple ways to solve a problem. I moved on to Key Curriculum Press and later for high school used Saxon (Algebra 1 through Calculus). All of this made me love math and well prepared me for college and my career as an engineer. I am trying but no children yet and am also looking into adoption and foster care. Math was enjoyable and interesting and I want my child to feel the same way. I know that the programs I used years ago were excellent but want to learn about other programs to see if in the years since I went through this if anything better has come out. I am leaning to Right Start pared with Miquon but time will show. From Critical Thinking Company was used for supplement and extra practice. Just getting prepared early. I looked into Teaching Textbooks but feel that since it ends at Pre-calculus it is not fully college prepatory and not as rigorous as Saxon Advanced Math (the course before Saxon Calculus). I will say for early grades I would not recommend Saxon for the elementary school, my sister used it and while it taught her the info well I think the rote approach so young led to her disliking math.
@sciencemama

K S I agree with so much of what you are saying! Having a concrete and hands on approach in the younger year is crucial! We also supplement with critical thinking company books - they are so great! It sounds like your future kiddos are going to be well covered in the math department!!

My apologies I was distracted by my one year old the first time watching the video. You already answered my original question. So, would you say Right Start would be worth starting for foundation purposes alone? even if it doesn't work long term due to a child not being able to handle the constant changes.
@sciencemama

noticed4what I’m just not sure, we only made it to about lesson 30. I feel like what was covered in the first 30 lessons of RightStart A was also covered in Dimensions. Although the games can be really good and you can pick up the game book separately... I’ve been meaning to play more RS games with my son but he seems to be doing well right now. When we hit a more challenging section, I will probably look up some games that tackle that concept in the RS games book. Does that help? How old is you kiddo?

Thank you for the thorough review. I’m still town between RightStart and Singapore Dimensions for my rising Kindergartener. I would be so appreciative if you could weigh in on my observations! My child is coming from a Montessori primary program where he used manipulatives. Like most 5 year old boys, he’s very active. Also, his math skills currently exceed his writing skills, though he is a highly competent writer. For these reasons, I am leaning towards RightStart for Kindergarten. However, a few personality traits give me pause. He is a to-the-point thinker with an innate gift for calculation. He does worksheets for fun, when he needs to focus on something specific to quiet his mind. In my observation, he breezes through them without much thought for the problems. So, I’m torn between challenging him to develop a stronger conceptual foundation through RightStart or honoring what seems to be his natural preference for worksheets with Singapore math. When we completed the Singapore placement tests he landed between KB and 1A. If I go with Singapore I would start with KB for review and begin 1A when he is ready. Thanks again for sharing your experiences!

Hi! Those are both great programs and it is so hard to know! My first thought is to try both and see which he responds to - but RS is so expensive! I like Singapore because its not all worksheets - first you work with manipulative, then a textbook with mom, then independent worksheets. The other thing to think about is if your son has a tendency to focus on one thing or prefer to float from thing to thing - because RS was spiral and my son preferred a bit more focus on a topic before moving on! Those are my thoughts - let me know what you think!
