I was worried about replacing my high-end older oasis with this one kzbin.infoUgkxCgPI5O2AtmcHq9SJhgsCGbpAzJAJfrJp but it is surprisingly light and the screen resolution is just as good. I never had the warm light on my old kindle, but i do not use it on the ipad so I will probably not need it. I think the only thing I'll miss is the self-adjusting light, but this is so worth it!

@Ieat utube "There's not a market for color e-ink readers" is not entirely correct. But colored e-ink technology is still quite expensive to implement at this stage, in a device that is substantially larger than a smartwatch. Those new-fangled innovations in LCD screens, by the by, would likely be even more expensive to implement than that. A market is only viable if the product is affordable to produce and to purchase. The other issue is the processor--another element of the total price of the device. Kindle processors are quite slow, which is fine if all you're doing is displaying text. As highlighted here, though, it hinders the device when it's trying to display PDF files. There are only a few reasons you'd want a color display on an e-reader, and one of them is comics and magazines, and other color-intensive publications like, say, tabletop RPG rulebooks and books with color illustrations. Those are another thing that would require a better processor to go with the color display. So this, too, would increase production costs. So, there is a market for color e-ink readers. There just isn't one that's sustainable. Yet. - Lewis

Great review, as always. The ONLY reason I would get this over the regular Paperwhite (which was given to me as a gift a few years ago) would be the option to reverse the black letters on white background scheme. I would really like to have that when I am reading on my bed at night before going to sleep (low brightness helps, but it's not the same). Otherwise, Paperwhite has a smaller screen and is not waterproof, but that hasn't stopped me from using it extensively. And YES, reading books on it is a whole new experience and much better than a tablet - it's immensely eye-friendly, with a battery that takes at least a week or two to die under heavy use, and not to mention practical with the ability to get gazillions of free books (if you know where to look).

I got the latest Kindle Oasis for Christmas, and while it probably is more expensive than it should be, I have to say, I love that thing. The one-handed bezel/button design is brilliant, the 7-inch E-ink display is nice, and while a tablet can certainly do many more things, I think what I needed for the sake of my mental health was something that lacks all the distractions of your smartphone and really is just a book reader. (While the E-ink Kindle does have a web browser, it's bare-bones enough that there's little temptation to get sucked into social media--it's there if you need a basic web browser in a pinch; a friend pointed out to me that you often need to have one for such things as connecting to hotel wi-fi.) The utterly seamless integration with the Amazon e-book store is what you might call an attractive nuisance. I love the dictionary (and Wikipedia) integration too, and the fact that you get free downloads of something like 40 dictionaries of various languages. Based on my experience of this device, I think I'd say that where E-ink really shines is reading in daytime or bright light, especially if it's bright enough that you don't need to use the light at all--the experience is just unparalleled there (in *direct* sunlight the display may actually be more readable than a paper book), and it's a situation where most modern displays struggle. For reading at night, the excellent front light system (which, in the 2020 model, now DOES have an adjustable color temperature) makes it still a decent experience. But OLEDs probably do have them beat under dark conditions, apart from power consumption--the contrast and black level of a front-lit E-ink display aren't quite as good. The Oasis does have a light-on-dark mode, but E-ink displays really aren't made for that, whereas OLEDs are in their element there.

People often can't understand why you would have multiple devices when you could just have everything on your phone. But not everything should be dominated by convenience. I still use my Zune for example to listen to podcasts and music. Sure, I have to plug it in to sync, but that's incredibly easy and the experience of using a Zune over a phone for audio is so much better thanks to the immediacy of it (don't have to open an app just to get to the music or podcasts) and the hardware buttons designed for navigating audio. And then cameras for instance. Yes, a phone is good for all the times when you don't want to carry around a separate camera, but optical zoom is virtually non-existent in phones and digital zoom just isn't the same, not to mention a good dedicated camera will beat the best phone camera in almost any circumstance.

I read mostly while commuting and I have my Kindle for convenience. You can lug around 300-400 page book but thicker are really annoying and heavy. At home, I don't mind too much, and I am a bit of book nerd, so physical book is also collector's item for me. Some books I own in 3 or 4 copies (one on Kindle, one hardback for shelf, one paperback for reading, and when translation is good, one in my mother language), and as translator, I sometimes use Kindle as display for original text I am translating. I am still old-fashioned (Your e-reader will be dead or useless after 10 years but physical book, if stored correctly, will last you decades. My family Bible from 1914 is great example of that) but convenience of just finding a book, downloading it and start reading it in minutes is great.

Well, I finally decided to get one of these and, honestly, I'm a bit disappointed. The aluminum feels cold, hard, and slippery. The asymmetrical design helps, but the edge kinda digs into my palm. I can't help but wish it were some type of rubber or something. I was surprised that the battery life is just bad for an e-reader. My first e-reader was the Nook Simple Touch, followed by a Kobo Aura One, a Kindle Paperwhite 3, and finally a Kindle Oasis 2. Right away I noticed how fast the battery drains in comparison to my other devices. What I do really like is the buttons. They're in the perfect spot and have just the right amount of click. They're fantastic! If the device were a bit cheaper I wouldn't mind, but at this price it should at least have great battery life. I know that the feel is subjective and many people seem to like it. I think I'm going to stick with the KA1 as my main reader and PW3 as my pocket reader. Maybe I'll try the Kobo Forma.

The new kindle oasis has an aluminum case, a glass durable display and is waterproof. It is inevitable to cost more than the other plastic models. I have the older kindle 4th generation with no backlight and the Kindle Voyage. The Kindle Voyage is superior but to be honest I don't see any important difference with adequate room light. Electronic ink is by far more relaxing to the eyes after many hours of reading. I have tested that many many times. For e-book lovers the electronic ink is the only way for easy reading. For those who don't spend more than two hours per day in front of a conventional display the iPad or even an iPhone are good enough. No reason to spend more money.

Color e-ink exists but for some reason it's having trouble penetrating the market. You just reminded me of a Pocketnow video I did back in the day: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bH-1hWt7apKlm68
@startedtech6 жыл бұрын
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] oh, I remember watching that video a few years ago! And after doing a bit of research, there were a few different e-readers in 2013 that used the color e-ink "Triton" displays, but they didn't catch on. I'm wondering if it's partially due to the relatively low effective resolution of 800x600. But still, you'd think with 5 years of advancements they'd have it down by now.
@devonslating13986 жыл бұрын
Color e-ink never panned out market wise. That said, eink has absolutely advanced tons since it came out. The resolution is now at 300ppi or greater and the "annoying flash" doesn't occur for every screen change anymore. Eink screens are now at a point where the grey scale is equal to the grey scale of paper, and the resolution is just as good as paper generally is as well.

2:04 I assume the 'next page' button is on top because it is where your thumb will naturally rest when holding the kindle in one hand. The 'next page' button will be more commonly used than the 'previous page' button, therefore it is more convenient to be able to select next page without having to move your thumb to the button below 🤷♂️ You demonstrate this at 2:07, when you go to select the bottom button you have to bend your thumb as opposed to leaving your thumb in it's natural resting position. I might be wrong though......although I very rarely am 😏😛

The Oasis model also has Audible compatibility, which is worth mentioning--you can use it as an audiobook player with a Bluetooth device. Yeah, you can do that on your phone... but that burns batteries on a device you really don't want to burn through too quickly, whereas your e-reader generally isn't using power at the same rate normally so it has more battery to spare for that sort of thing. The e-book compatibility was the main reason I opted to snag an Oasis myself, as I've got quite a few Audible books at this point to go with my ever-growing e-book library. - Lewis
@BrainScratchComms6 жыл бұрын
Additional comment: the audible compatibility does indeed work well. I paired my Oasis with a newly-purchased set of Bluetooth sports headphones and the quality was quite nice. The Oasis also appears to have the Whispersync functionality that the mobile/tablet Kindle app has, meaning you can play the audiobook in sync with the e-book and read the text while listening, which has always been a nice, relaxing feature. - Lewis

If you're in the market for ebook reader, go for it. Start with a paperwhite if you aren't sure. I have about 1200 books at home, and I'm already sure that I'll have almost no new printed books (unless I absolutely love it, or if it's something that I also need to write in). e-books on an e-reader are the way to go. Reading it feels exactly like any other page, but it comes with more conveniences. Also, I find myself more likely to finish books, because they're easier to bring around and because the e-reader remembers where you left off, gives you a dictionary, and provides you with character/key snippets at relevant parts of the chapter.

Mr Mobile, your reviews are spot on! Have had the opportunity to read much more much faster thanks to e readers despite my initial hostility towards them!

With 3G I can take it my Oasis anywhere. The only place I've had any (temporary) trouble was taking the ferry from Tarifa Spain to Tanger Morocco. Connection restored just before I arrived in Tanger. Fabulous!

As someone who reads a lot of books, this is an intriguing product... I have used the cheapest kindle and some kobo readers before and e-ink is really thr bomb for reading...

Honestly, unless you absolutely need the waterproofing or extra inch of screen, I'd suggest picking up the 1st gen Oasis. It's way cheaper and has the same design, but with a non-slip coating to the plastic, and comes with a nice cover that doubles as a battery.

The best thing about Kindle is Amazon's guarantee scheme. I dropped my 4th Gen Kindle many times from the night stand and Amazon sent me a new one twice no question asked when the screen went wonky. Moreover, my six and half year old is still great. Personally don't think you need the 32 GB version of Oasis, since Mobi files are quite small and unless you've got thousands of books on your device you won't need all the space specially with the Archive feature of Kindle. I've been looking for a new Kindle and I can't justify the price of the Oasis even though it's an awesome reader and as a student I've read my fair share of books on Laptops and Tablets, which would let you know immediately what a pleasure is an e-reader to use.

3:15 In my opinion, Likebook and BOOX handle PDFs better than Kindle, plus, they can still read content from services like Kindle and OverDrive through their respective tablet apps! 3:45 That problem only exists on the iOS version, not the Android version.

Just so you know, this particular Oasis is the one I own. It still operates as if I just received it yesterday. Just for the record. See no reason to replace it.

Wow, I really am intrigued by the buttons on the side. It would be cool to not have to move my hand every time to tap the screen. Great video!

I’m quite the reader myself, so this is a product I’d consider, as expensive as it is. I should probably get used to an e-reader rather than paper books, as e-readers are much lighter, more environment-friendly and way less of a space filler. Thanks for the review! 😌👌

I'd pay $500 for this, and that doesn't make me happy. Sadly, books give you super powers, and consumption methods is so important.

@@NetvoTV I guess is not good for comics, neither magazien, its perfect for books, you can check some other videos how people test the comics in a kindle

I bought a Paperwhite 3 in 2015, a first generation Oasis in 2016, and this newest generation Oasis in 2017. Each one has been better than the last, and I love the newest model. I read daily, so while I do have tablets (watching this on a 10.5" iPad Pro), I vastly prefer reading actual books on the Kindle. I use the iPad for pdf files and comics/manga, but for everyday reading the Kindle wins out.

I love my kindle oasis. iPad is way too heavy to hold and read, iPhone is too small to read efficiently. Kindle oasis is expensive but it is worth every penny. Plus you can get audible and connect to a Bluetooth speaker, listen to a good book while doing chores.

All this time, I assumed Mr. Mobile had millions of subscribers simply because the quality was so good. Also, a suggestion, you could work on a more simplified script that presents your views crystal clear.

I prefer Nook to Kindle, thanks. It's more intuitive in that it feels more like interacting with an actual book, even down to turning the page. Also, using an ebook for citations in academic writing works better with Nook in that I can list an exact page location, whereas using Kindle I must change citation format and record a long location identifier. For those reasons alone, I always choose a Nook book rather than a Kindle, unless it's only available through Amazon.

Just the books and a paper-like experience on the eyes is what wins it over an iPad any day. I want as close to a physical book in hand experience as possible with digital technologies not overshadowing the experience I seek. The Kindle is cemented in my Top 3 tech devices of all time. Took me a while to convert, but I [thankfully] saw the light like Hank Williams.

Great review Michael. A pricing alternative you didn't mention: buying physical books (maybe at a used bookstore?). I understand the pros that a digital device has, especially when traveling but as others have said, there's something satisfying about the physical book experience that is lost going digital.

I never use or saw how kindle works so that screen speed is unbelievable to my eyes. Wish e-ink technology keep evolving.

I have been using my current kindle paperwhite since 2013. While it has been reliable up until now, in recent weeks the battery charge has not been lasting and sometimes does not fully charge. The screen is also flickering. I have restarted the kindle several times and been able to fully charge the battery. However after listening to your review I am seriously considering buying the 2018 model. It looks like there are very few changes which is good in some respects as I don't have to learn all the new features. For some reason we are unable to buy kindle batteries in NZ. They have to be ordered from overseas and can take 2-4 weeks for delivery. There is also the issue of it being a lithium battery that the NZ postal service does not allow to be delivered in our country. I hear what you are saying about buying a refurbished model but again how long will it last.

The Kindle Voyager is the best because it has auto back-light. This new model is crazy expensive. I've had the Voyager for years and I have no complaints.

One thing the Oasis doesn’t do is text to speech like my 2nd Gen Kindle and the the apps for iPad , phone, and PC can do. This isn’t an Accessory feature but a native text to speech that can be adjust with various voices and speeds. Amazon removed the feature a few years ago to push people to buy Audibles which can be expensive. Also, Audibles can be adjusted like a true text to speech feature. For the price, it should have it. My 2009 2nd Gen still connects to Amazon without WiFi but the battery charge was fading so I go a used Paperwhite for $50. Works like new and looks it.

Have an Oasis and love it. Ereaders are always better than any backlit device. Phones and tablets have an annoying glare in direct light. If you use a tablet at night, the blue light will interfere with your sleep. No problem with this with eink devices. Also, ereaders possess a longer battery life.

Currently have a voyage but I’m getting ready to buy an oasis. Upon listing an old Kindle touch and I’ve never really used, I realize this old beast actually has text to speech! I wonder why the new models don’t feature that? I mean with one touch you can have your text read by the reader.
