[SUMMARY]
Here’s what I recommend:
If you’re thinking about buying the Oasis, be conscious of your requirements in an ereader. If you want the absolute best display quality, you should check out the Paperwhite.
If you want the best screen and an asymmetrical design, check out the Kobo Libra 2.
And if you are willing to pay a little extra to get the best haptics and are willing to compromise on the screen a little bit, the Oasis is the right choice.

*Part of why I keep coming back to the Oasis is the exceptional build quality and haptics. Even though others have caught up, the Oasis is still ahead of the rest - for the most part. Paired with the great contrast levels and lighting quality, that's easily enough to still recommend the Oasis in 2022.*

I have had almost all of the Kindle generations beginning with the original. I bought the Kindle Oasis 2nd generation when it came out and I use it daily. I like the temperature control that came with the 3rd edition, but not enough to spend the money on buying one. (I bought an adjustable amber book light for about $15 that works just fine.) While I have always purchased the best screen available for the Kindle, the lack of page turn buttons on the new Paperwhite is a deal breaker for now.

I own both of these: Oasis 2nd generation and Paperwhite Signature. When using the Paperwhite, I do miss the premium feel of the Oasis and the page turn buttons. When I'm using the Oasis, I miss the screen warmth option and the nice page turn animation... and the battery life of the Paperwhite which is incredible. So I tend to use both, depending on.. well... no logical explanation really.. whatever I feel like using. :)

Just ordered a brand new 32GB Champaign Gold Oasis for $125. It is normally $280 but has a 34% discount for Black Friday/Cyber Monday so it is $185. Amazon is also giving 40% by using AMEX rewards points max $60 off by using .01 AMEX reward point. I was on the fence at $185 and was going to wait for the Kindle Oasis 4 but at $125 I couldn't pass this up. Then I got three months of Kindle Unlimited for $0.99. You can get the Oasis with three free months of Kindle Unlimited but the AMEX deal wouldn't work with that.

Yes. In fact, get two. I love the first Kindle Oasis. It's the one I use the most for e-books - it's small and has buttons, which is perfect for me (even if the battery is dead). I also have a Kindle Oasis 3, which I use for manga and comic books. They're both two of my favorite e-reading devices (the Nook GlowLight 4 is probably my current top favorite). 🤔🧐

Perfect analysis! I really liked the ergonomics of the Oasis, including the buttons and weight, in addition to the excellent quality of the materials. However, having the Paperwhite side by side, the screen is superior, showing a better uniformity of tone and practically leaving no ghosting from the previous pages. Surely, a new Oasis, with an updated screen, will be perfect!

Hi. The only thing that bothers me about the paperwhite is that it doesn't have physical buttons to turn the page. I have had the keyboard 3 for more than 10 years, which even has a keyboard. It's not tactile. But I find the buttons to turn the page comfortable. Do you get used to turning the page with the touch? I wanted to buy the Oasis but I didn't want to buy it and next month they will announce the release of a new edition. I don't now what to do... 😕What do you recommmend me to do? Wait for a possible new Oasis or buy one? Which one would you recommend? Greetings from Argentina, my friend.
@ChalidRaqami

Hi - in my experience the switch to a touchscreen-only ereader is pretty seamless. It doesn't take much getting used to in my opinion, especially because you still have two options to turn a page in most devices: tapping and swiping. So you should find at least one of those good enough to replace the physical buttons. BUT: Physical buttons are still a big plus in my opinion. If I had the choice between two otherwise identical ereaders, I'd pick the one with the buttons. I suspect Amazon will update the Kindle Oasis in the summer of next year, with a larger 8 inch screen and note taking (like the Kindle Scribe). But that's just my personal guess. If that's not something you'd need, go for the current model - it's still excellent. However, I usually recommend the Kindle Paperwhite to friends and family, because the value for your money is simply better all things considered. Coming from a Kindle 3 (which I also loved using), switching to the Kindle Paperwhite or Oasis is a huge improvement in any case. Screen contrast levels and the built in light makes reading so much more comfortable, that you won't focus on the potentially missing buttons too much.

It's one of the best ereaders out there imho. But it was released in 2019, so I'm not sure about long-term software support. EDIT: Oh, and I forgot the mushy power button, which I always found annoying when using it more regularly.

@@mobilesecure Good question ... :D Thinking about it, the Pocketbook InkPad 3 Pro might really be the best in that size segment: Light color adjustment, water proofing, audiosupport via bluetooth, physical buttons ... there's not much they could have done better. The Kobo Sage is nice as well, but softwarewise more limited and I find the lighting on the InkPad 3 (Pro) to be a bit better. Contrast is a little better on the Sage though, but short battery life can be an issue. The Boox Nova Air 2 comes to mind as well, but that's too expensive imho, especially if you don't care about note taking. Android might be a strong selling point though. All in all, I'd recommend getting the InkPad 3 Pro if you're looking for an 8 inch ereader right now, even though it has Micro USB. No idea if PocketBook is working on a successor, but if they are, I imagine it might be released later this year. The PocketBook Viva (with E-Ink Gallery 3) also has an 8 inch screen, so they might use the same design to release a black-and-white version of it as well and replace the InkPad 3 Pro.

I ended up buying a Kobo the last time I bought an eReader and don't think I'll ever buy another Kindle. I have had Kindle 2, Kindle 3 (kb), Kindle PW 1-3, Voyage, and Oasis. Big reader but the latest update for Kindle, which is on this video is of the new update that was forced on us, it makes me getting back to my library and books to choose from without being "online" which is not what I want to do with the Kindle, have many more steps. Amazon got rid of the back button for a shared button for library/home/back and it does what they want, frequently dropping you back into their suggested "next" screen NOT the list of books of my library. Everything takes longer and it is trying to work as a tablet, no longer page turns to go through your library with 8 books (then 7) listed but now only 5 can be seen at once. I have hundreds and hundreds of books and read a tremendous amount. This 5 book listing with very, very small covers does nothing but slow down my ordering of books, in addition if I page through it puts the bottom book at top and only 4 new books are visible. How is this in any way an improvement? They have a slider (like a tablet) and you can use a second hand to scroll thru your list.... only, you don't know what page you are on, only the slide bar gives you some idea but with hundreds of books, it is totally guess work. I hate the way my updated Oasis works today, hate. I have a not update Oasis (no ads) that still works as I want and I just NEVER go online as the update would be forced. I slightly didn't like the update in 2018 (8 to 7 listings) so left one of our 2 Oasis' always in airplane mode. BTW the battery if not in airplane mode and bluetooth off is horrible so you want it in airplane mode all the time. We have several readers and I like trying all new things and hadn't bought a non Kindle since the first NOOK Glowlight so I decided to buy Kobo and got the one as close to the Oasis in size and function. Not as nice quality material, but I'm all about the reading. I used a case that turns off and on the unit which the power button is a bit hard but other than that I love it. I can get books from directly from Overdrive (only one library, they need to do a Libby update). Their list had the little covers in list view before Kindle and I didn't like this, still don't but since it seems both want to do this... so I have to deal with only 5 in my list but I get quick library access and the form is slightly bigger than the Oasis, I guess the Libra would be the same size screen but Libra is not flush, Kobo is with a flush screen.

although, I hesitate to change since I've built up a library, and I've bought Kindle ebooks with credits and sales that I haven't read yet. I used to know how to convert ebooks into different formats with Calibre and a hack, but I don't even know if that's an option anymore. Plus, the changeover to Libby from Overdrive's earlier app (which was still better even after several Libby updates) was clumsy and I resented the way it was handled. It's not too unlike trying to move to linux desktop from Windows. I never liked Microsoft, but it's not easy to leave Windows.

The Kindle Paperwhite is simply more future proof imho. It's newer (will get updated potentially a little longer), has USB-C, a bigger battery and the newer screen technology. It's also much cheaper than the Oasis, which is why I recommend it more often at the moment. The Oasis has better haptics and physical page turn buttons, which can outweigh some of the mentioned (admittedly small) shortcomings compared to the Paperwhite. So the Oasis is still the better choice if you like tactile feedback when using the device. Both have the same user interface and will most likely receive software updates for years to come, but as I mentioned, the Paperwhite will possibly get them a little longer though. Bottom line: You can't really go wrong with either one. Both are excellent ereaders, but I still recommend the Paperwhite as it has a small edge overall (especially when taking the price into account).

I would NEVER buy an eReader without page-turn buttons. My real gripe with the Oasis is that it doesn't have a third button (designed like, and placed next to, the power button) for toggling touchscreen capability. As it is, I have to navigate a stupid menu every time I sit down to read so I can manhandle the Oasis the way it's meant to be manhandled - THAT is why the page-turn buttons exist.

@Epics the problem isn't just the page-turn buttons; it's the ability to disable the touchscreen. It is terrible design to have one without the other. This is why the Kobo Libre is a joke in my mind, and only the Oasis will do. It really sucks that there aren't more options, but if I were you, I'd save up for it. I've had mine for seven years and have thousands of hours on it. Your average consumer treats their eReader like a toy they rarely pick up, and when they do, it's mainly to fiddle with the settings. If you want to actually use your eReader to read, there's nothing like being able to do that without constantly having to position your hands a certain way to avoid accidental touchscreen interaction. If it weren't for those two features, I wouldn't even use an eReader. Who wants to be careful while you read? I'm telling you, it's the ability to handle an eReader hamfistedly that makes it even better than a book. Save up for that Oasis.

The strange shape of the Oasis was necessitated by the separate charging case in the original model, it doesnt make a lot of sense now that has been dropped and makes it a bit unbalanced IMOP; also restricts battery life. Probably they will substantially redesign for the next iteration. Am using the Signature edition right now, which is OK, but the thin bezels make it a little unwieldy to hold and the on/off button on the bottom is a nuisance. Also, the operating system is still glacially slow for functions other than reading. Be interesting to see what they do; there are still a lot of improvements that could be made for a perfect reading device.
