With the Kindle Scribe, the Remarkable 2 got its most prominent contender. And while both 10 inch e-ink devices seem similar on the surface, there are fundamental differences, which can make either one a good or bad choice - depending on your personal needs.
Let’s check out, who should and shouldn’t buy the Kindle Scribe and Remarkable 2 in this in-depth comparison.

[SUMMARY]
The Remarkable 2 clearly has the upper hand when it comes to note taking functionality. There are many useful features and the company has extended them over the years.
Using the Kindle Scribe makes it very clear, that Amazon is just entering the notetaking market. The functions work perfectly fine, but the feature set for handwritten notetaking is much more limited.
On the other hand, the Scribe is simply the better device when it comes to ebooks and readability. Thanks to the built-in frontlight its much more comfortable to use. Even in a well lit room, using the frontlight is a useful option.
So the bottom line is this: Get a Kindle Scribe, if you mainly want to read and don’t intent to use the notetaking functions too heavily. Choose the Remarkable 2 if you want to mainly take notes, but not if you want to read ebooks.

Subbed on the basis of this one very complete and insightful, and succinctly presented review! Great value for the community! After much deliberation (and an imperfect decision to first get the Boox Nova Air 2 Plus), I just received my Kindle Scribe yesterday, for 1) mainly a better reading experience than on my otherwise beloved Kindle Voyage, and 2) simple notetaking (to-do lists, song ideas, etc.). I also considered the Remarkable, and it might have won if the weakness you pointed out here had finally been alleviated by, say, a new „Remarkable 3“ device with lights, better eBook/Kindle reading, etc. End of story: The Scribe is precisely what I had hoped it would be, and your review covers all the bases, including the all-important in-the-hands-feel of it (without case in my case, since I prefer it that way, and just use a felt sleeve for storing it). The lights are a godsend, and the writing experience is very satisfying. Incidentally, there now IS a lasso tool for the Scribe (check out the latest firmware if you haven‘t already).

Generally speaking, a larger screen can be beneficial for digital reading if someone has problem with their eyesight. Simply because more words can fit on a page when using a large text size and you don't have to flip the pages as often. So a Kindle Scribe with its 10 inch screen is definitely worth a closer look. It also allows to set a slightly larger text size in the menus, which can also be useful. You can adjust the font size with the smaller models as well, and depending on your specific problems, a Kindle Paperwhite - which is much cheaper - can already be sufficient. The screen quality is very good in all current Kindle models - there are no significant differences in this respect. I'm comparing all current Kindle models in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXmpgJiudpampNE

Despite having some of the best hardware on the market (highest resolution, lowest pen latency, excellent build quality), the Scribe is one of the cheapest 10-inch e-ink devices on the market. Getting a discount this early after launch is a good deal! :)

Since there are people - like me - that only need a note taking instrument (not a tablet), remarkable sounds nice Also everyone says that the writing experience is excellent. But also taking notes means to easily scribble on pdfs, word documents etc and other different types of books, thus the easily access to everything is vital, why pay for mailing services, why there is no light.... I am really confused about this device. Nice review.

There are a LOT of folio and pencil options on Amazon that are compatable with both of these devices and I would suggest getting those accessories from a 3rd party, and NOT through Remarkable. I just bought my RM2, but ordered my pencil and folio from Amazon... I saved $100.

I have ended up with an iPad, MacAir, Remarkable 2, Amazon Scribe and some older Kindle readers. I use this collection for work and home. As there is no perfect device, I look at these as all part of a tool kit and you simply cannot have enough tools. As for the comparison in question I find the front lit screen of the Scribe a big advantage for my needs. However, I have even found uses for both the Remarkable 2 and the Scribe during the day. Secretly, I also keep a pad and pen nearby. Great review, by the way.

I'm thinking much same. Each device seems to have its niche purpose. I use my iPad for various things but cannot see using it for extensive note taking due to the very glassy surface feels & I really prefer the idea of an e-ink device for notetaking. I picked up a Boox Air2 Plus thinking that would be great for notetaking and Kindle Book reading since it is an Android based device. I am not liking it for reading - I find the resolution to be poor as type seems pixelated to some extent compared to any Kindle device. Also not thrilled about saving sensitive docs on a Chinse cloud server. I got the Scribe and man is it great for reading Kindle books. I like the recent update that adds more pens, but I really need layers and ability to store my doc to Dropbox. Editing true PDFs would also be nice. So, here I am thinking of the RM2 for note taking. Dilemmas Dilemmas. IDK. This kinda reinforces the idea that there is no ONE DEVICE FITS ALL NEEDS.

Yes, it's still true, but the gap isn't as big as it was when I made the video. Amazon updated the Scribe a couple of time with some useful features which made it much better for notetaking than it initially was at launch. So I'd say the basic message of the video is still the same, but I suspect more people are willing to compromise and go for the Scribe with it's improved features.

Though that’s cool, that feature is not a priority for me. The scribe is still sitting in the box, unopened while I’m still trying to decide. Being a small business owner, I don’t like returning things. But, the only way I’ll know for sure is to give it a whirl. It's really hard to say, because it depends on the requirements. The Remarkable 2 or Supernote A5X are great E-Ink tablets that are focused on notetaking. You'll get a very well thought out system for taking notes on either one. My main issue with both is that they don't have a built-in front-light, which can be a bit annoying at times. The Kindle Scribe is an ereader first, but works just fine as a note-taking device as well. It's just not as feature-rich as the other ones. But having said that, I come back to the Scribe all the time, because it's one of the quickest to start up. And the frontlight and display quality are awesome. I'll do a video shortly, where I specifically talk about school related applications of various E-Ink tablets.

Thanks, and sorry for the late response :) I got the question a couple of times in the past and it's not easy to answer. Amazon offers one of the most accessible ereaders out there, but they aren't perfect either. You can change the user interface text size a little, so it's easier to read. You can also switch to dark-mode which might also help. And there's also a screen-reader (called "VoiceView") that reads the items on the screen out loud and helps navigating the user interface. Another option might be the PocketBook InkPad Lite, which has a 9.7 inch E-Ink screen and the user interface is just scaled up to the larger screen size, which probably makes it the easiest to navigate of any ereader I've used.
