I reckon it's some kind of bacterial necrosis. The snake obviously has some immunity, otherwise he would have already died.

Well they are, at least to the part of the venom that would kill them, but they can't do much about flesh eating enzimes

From what I understand it depends on the type of venom. Given browns have necrotic or basically flesh eating venom there's very little they can do to be immune to such a thing.

To a Mulga snake, they are one of my favorite snakes in Australia. That had to be one of the most stressful scenes towards such remarkable serpents. I am truly glad you've done everything that is possible to save the Mulga snake's life, you are truly wildlife's guardian angels. That I promise you it is the truth you needed to hear from my point of view.

I’ve kept pythons and I know how they get when they get over excited with food. I’ve been bit a couple times too even with tongs. I’ve never seen a snake bite itself though. I can see it happening because of the food but it’s still pretty crazy.

Its venom is necrotic, so I don’t think anti-venom would work since the issue is tissue damage and not that it poisoned itself.
