My husband, 92, deeply into Alzheimer's, still is wonderful with a set of pencils, he was known for his engineering drawings. He cannot coordinate many activities, but he uses a pencil sharpener, lines up his pencils, goes from an H pencil to a 4b depending on his illustration. It has made me proud. He even made my Christmas card, mitred corners! Creativity must be needed deeply within us. I write, I need always to have a project with research, and our doctor urges me to keep us creative. Hope his advice is of help to the Chums.

I started school in 1948 and when the class was getting out of hand our pipe smoking teacher used to get out empty tobacco tins which he had filled with multi coloured plastic tube beads together with pieces of string and we were encouraged to make necklaces or bracelets. It calmed us down and left me with a lifelong interest in crafting from making clothes for everyone from fancy dress for my children to my son’s girlfriend’s graduation ballgown, an Yves St. Laurent creation, to a dolls house from a kit together with the decoration, flooring, roofing, electrification and all of the furniture.

I was talking to my friend and she said she wasn’t fond of HM King Charles and Queen Camila. When I told her that the Queen had always been his True Love (and vice versa)and why everything happened the way it did, she was shocked. *No disrespect to Princess Diana or the beautiful boys they had together.* I talked of their shared hobbies and passions, like gardening, conservation and their crafty sides, to name a few. She was amazed the King was a painter and I had to pull up some of his work to show her. There is so much more to King Charles than most people know, more than the “King in Waiting” he was all those years and most importantly that he and the Queen are truly happy together. What more could one ask for? ❤

I have always tried to make a lot of my presents myself, for birthdays or Christmas and mostly make my own cards. Big wave, Neil. His Majesty is 100% correct. And it is not old fashioned. In today's world it is a necessity and far BETTER than alcohol or drugs. Crafting is therapeutic, calming, soothing and relaxing. As well, for example, knitters, crocheters, sewers, even gardeners, make items that can be used, gifted, donated or sold. So it's helping people, generating money, helping the economy not to mention helping those in need. It is a centuries old tradition and an important one as King Charles states. It helps keep old crafts like hand weaving, pottery and the making of musical instruments by hand alive and, more importantly, the knowledge is passed on from generation to generation. Personally, watching a movie while knitting is a great way to relax. Indeed, anything involving making things with your hands has been proven to liwer stress levels and increase good hormones in the body. A good thing I say. To all those people who thinks it's quaint or old, I say try a different craft or interest until you find your passion. Great way to meet people and expand your horizons. Come on, I dare you to try!

My Grandmother taught my younger sister and me the basics of sewing on a treadle Singer sewing machine back in the mid to late 1960's. By the time I was 14, I was making and selling baby quilts to earn "spending money". People from away (what we called tourists) would pay $35-40 in the mid '70's for a baby quilt and I sometimes sold 2 or 3 in a week! It's been over ten years since I made a quilt.

It’s entirely possible that the situation in the UK is different, because crafting is pretty popular in the U.S. I include things like crocheting, jewelry making, quilting, woodworking, making homemade soaps, etc. in the crafts category. Making scrap books (mementos, not trash) was extremely popular for a while, but that has died down over past 5 years. But overall I would still say that making crafts across all genres is pretty stable in the US. There’s several studio spaces in my city which you can rent by the hour to get access to a potters wheel, or other specialized equipment, they wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t a demand. You folks in the UK need to get your crafts in gear!! 😉👩🎨🎨
