After the departure of the Roman Empire from Britain's shores, the native Romano-Britons tried to maintain & continue their policies & maintain security (some say the last true successor to the Roman Empire in the West was actually a minor Welsh kingdom). That meant giving native chiefs authority, and hiring foreign tribes as mercenaries, foederati, who were then paid in settlement rights - ie. the Angles, Saxons, & Jutes. King Cerdic seems to have been one such native Chief who hired Angles to help keep order and maintain coastal security. Indeed, it may even be that the lineage of leadership might go back to pre-Roman times, since Old Sarum, the original ancient seat of the House of Wessex (or, rather, Cerdic's tribe, the Gewisse, which also may have been a native Britonnic name) was originally a native Britonnic hillfort built in 400 BC. Funnily enough, Old Sarum is located near to Stonehenge. The House of Wessex eventually took over all the lands settled by the Angles, Saxons & Jutes, ie. England. They incorporated other Anglo-Saxon Royal Houses, too. William the Conquerer took over England himself because he claimed the last undisputed English King, Edward the Confessor (who was childless) appointed him as his heir and successor - which was true.
